I checked out the review of Redlettermedia, and one of the people who worked on the film commented on it. The reason the movie looked so good is that Disney spent 2 years in post production to make sure everything was polished, something they don't really do as much these days.

There is one very big flaw this movie has. It's middle. It was written to be a half hour longer, and Disney definitely made them cut out that half hour. I've a feeling the middle is what suffered, and as a result, a lot of the payoff in the third act happens for things that were barely even given time to breathe in their set up. One of the greatest third acts in film history was killed by a studio.

@sutterkane100 Ummmm, "Hadn't hit yet"??? You do know the ORIGINAL Tron film started the glowy neon look back in 1982, right? I also remember seeing a Marching Band at DisneyWorld back in '78, and they marched at night, with outfits fitted with glowing neon glowsticks, as well as an '80s TV Show, "Automan" about a guy made of glowing blue circuits and he drove a glowing Lamborghini Countach that could make 90° turns, just like the light cycles in the original movie. Then the LAWNMOWER MAN movie came out in '92 and it, too, has a slight Tron-inspired look. Eleven years later, TRON 2.0 (a video game sequel to '82 TRON) came out. After Legacy came out 7 years later, I kept seeing commercials using the Tron glow effect, or incorporating a Tron look, even a Toyota commercial pretty much copying the '82 LightCycle scene, as well as even some of the recent Transformers cartoons giving their robot characters glow lines.

    And the acting was good.
I think it's a real tragedy the way this movie is seen.
I don't think it deserves the hate. And to me it is a cult classic.
Even if I would have changed the narrative just a bit.
    Excellent review. Great video.! 👍

There is a lot of lore behind the movie. Flynn wasn't all powerful, at least not inside the grid. He was a user and that allowed him to manipulate grid's energy in ways programs could not or found too difficult. Grid is a really complex environment. One of the reasons for Flynn's downfall was his inability to sort out the energy and bug problems in the grid.

Tron Legacy is everything that the Star Wars sequel trilogy should have been, they did everything that Star Wars did 10 times better, it's disgusting how this movie was universally panned and the Force Awakens and to some extent the Last Jedi are praised when they couldn't do anything that Legacy did right:
    Soft rebooting the franchise.
Introducing competently written new characters that the old ones can pass the torch down to.
Having a likable strong female character.
Using the main character from the original movie to serve as a disgruntled mentor without destroying his entire character- in fact Flynn's character grew MORE from his failures while still leaving a spark of hope that one day he would make things right. Flynn was more like how Luke Skywalker would have been than Luke was in the Last Jedi.
All of the new characters have believable life changing character development by the end of the movie.
Had a compelling enough villain that wasn't just a recycled version of the previous villain.
My biggest complaint with the movie is that the world doesn't feel lived in, we aren't given any time to know how life is in the Gird- although technically you do get that chance if you played Tron: Evolution, you shouldn't have to play a game or read a book to compensate for a lack of world building in a movie. It just feels like we're dropped into an empty city, Tomorrow Land suffered from the same thing the concept (build up in the movie) was so much more interesting than the execution. I want to know what the programs do, what's their government's like- did clue dissolve the previous one and create a dictatorship? if so, how? (yes I know that it's explained in Tron: Evolution). what was life like for the ISOs and how did they interact with the programs? We get a small amount of explanation during the movie- and to be fair there's just too much that needs to be explained and not enough to do it within an acceptable run-time. Still, I hate how empty and somewhat boring the Grid is.

It's such a shame Disney just have no idea on how to use or market the property. The seem to blow a load of money on 1 or 2 things hoping it'll be popular then immediately give up when they feel it isn't popular enough.
I recall this being the case with uprising actually I watched the first half on weekly basis on Disney XD then it went on hiatus then they quietly released second half with no advertisement for it until I happened upon a rerun of the second half one day. Needless to say missing a few episodes.
I hope after they build this new coaster in magic Kingdom that they decide to give the franchise another go, or if they are truly that skint after the lockdowns rent the IP out to someone that will do something with it.

Sorry but, by coincidence just watched it last week:
The film does achieve a tremendous height with its visuals and EVERYONE in the world loves the Daft Punk soundtrack.
But one of the main central elements of the original 1980s movie is the entrance of Flynn into the digital world. This concept is barely touched upon in this sequel (certainly a lackluster visually crafted scene, followed by, what I feel, is barely a response to a human's entrance into a computer, or international digital network, as it were, by its occupants), and bastardized at the end by actually bringing an isomorphic algorithm (Quorra) into the real world - giving her flesh and blood from what I gather is spontaneously generated software - Idiotic!
Furthermore, the moronic producers actually did NOT credit (the great, in my book) Cillian Murphy for the film

    • @strongblade
      @strongblade 4 роки тому +4

It is no more 'idiotic' than transporter technology in Star Trek. You are using an established device from the first movie that took a physical object (first an orange, then Kevin Flynn) and convert it from matter to energy, store it (in the 'grid' or the system if you like) then later reform that energy pattern back into it's original form. Now, whether or not the recombined real-world form is actually the same as what was 'digitized' is up for debate, but at the very least, it is a perfect replica, if not the original.
In the case of Quorra, she is a fully established energy pattern, recreating it in the real world with the same device is possible within the confines of the movie's established lore. It is a bit like a 3-D printer of today creating a real-world object out of a virtual creation. Only in this case it is a highly complex living being (presumably, since ISO origins are simply 'unknown', being as Kevin suspects they simply emerged into being) but this device CAN handle that as both Kevin and Sam have been digitized and returned. Kevin did it on a regular basis for a while before becoming trapped.
Another "X" factor is Kevin's Identity Disc, in that it seems to be the key to making this happen, at least for beings that didn't originate from the real world. But we aren't given much in the way of how it is possible, only that it is probably the only way it can happen.
Oh, and I agree, the great Cillian Murphy was underused, but I believe they intended to use him more in a sequel to Legacy, and this was an introduction. A sequel that alas, we probably will never get.

Even with the Box Office Bomb that was "Tomorrowland", I understand from an industry point of view that it would be difficult to approve another film in a similar genre that didn't do so well either. So in regards to "Tron" and "Tron: Legacy", it was such a shame to see it never completed. Tron: Legacy was a greatly underrated film that still holds up to this day. It is one of my favorite films of all time and one of the main films that influenced me to attend film school. the 2009 sequel was beautifully shot by the amazing cinematographer Claudio Miranda and the amazing director Joseph Kosinski. This was actually Kosinski's first major film and he absolutely nailed it.
Here we are in 2020 where films are looking better than ever and there is so much creative potential with the technology we have now. And will say this with all my heart, Tron: Legacy holds up incredibly well to today's standards, in my opinion. the only this that could use improvement would be the CGI of young Flynn (Jeff Bridges). Flynn was a flawed character but he was made so much better because he grows as a character from the last time we saw him, as the cocky young guy who is essentially a God, the creator of the Grid. He grows and you see how much he cares for his son Sam and even the last Iso Quorra. He saves them from Clu and realizes it's what he must do.
The story was great and all the characters were fantastic. It was a very well written story with great ideas that had from what had been set up, to lead into a very interesting sequel. Especially with the short epilogue "Tron: The Next Day" with Bruce Boxleitner truly reprising the mantle of TRON and even Dan Shor reprising his role as the one and only RAM! This would have lead to quite a bit of anticipation for what the Third Tron film could have been, with Tron and Ram reuniting, Sam and Quorra in the real world, and Clu/Flynn wanting to bring his army into the real world to place his "System" on the imperfect race that is Humanity.
If Tron 3 or "Tron: Ascension" (as it was rumored to be called), is ever to be put into production, with would make so many people happy, and it would give Disney a lot of respect if done will with the actors and Kosinski back on board. Trust me that there is so much following for these two movies and the Tron Uprising series. When I went to the El Capitan Double showing two years ago, it was such a blast to experience. But on top of that, one cannot forget the OTS that Daft Punk created for the film. Still by far one of the best sound tracks out there. It fits the the world and story so well.
I do hope it will be taken off the book shelf and brought back to life. And if Jared Leto is to actually be brought it, don't let it be a remake/soft reboot. Let it continue where Legacy left off in some manner. There is so much world, story, and character development left to be explored.
    Thank You

The effects hold up to today's standards, too. That opening sequence about "The Grid" reminds me of the opening shot in Transformers 2007 (also underrated) about "The Cube". Making such a groundbreaking movie, announce a sequel and cancel it, making millions of people feel disregarded and craving, was very disrespectful.

I was introduced to Tron Legacy about a week before it premiered while on vacation with my family at Disneyland/California Adventure parks in Anaheim CA. They had a night time “dance party” event called “elecTRONica” where they decorated the “Hollywood Backlot” section of California Adventure into a real life “Grid” with a giant Recognizer that scanned you, a End of Line Club with glowing drinks, a 30 minute extended preview of TRON:Legacy playing in the Muppet theatre, and Flynn’s Arcade full of restored arcade cabinets as well as a few “Easter Egg” arcade cabinets with playable versions of the games Kevin Flynn invented, but were stolen by Dillinger in the first film like Space Paranoids and Vice Squad. The area was so well done and mesmerizing, it got me interested in TRON and it eventually became my favorite Sci Fi universe, supplanting Star Wars...

I have LOVED this film ever since it came out ten years ago! The score alone makes the entire film like the best music video ever! But that is just half of the fun. The rest is exactly what H is saying here, the film has very much a story worth telling. It is a modern hero's journey with all the classic elements with the young hero that is reluctantly but with curiosity thrust into an adventure & ends up saving a world basically. Even is Sam himself is not the great savor in this hero's journey, his father, Kevin, that is also not just serving as the god entity but very much so the mentor character, takes on the purpose of slaying the "dragon", which is, ironically an evil & messed-up version of himself. Lots of symbolism & most of all, character focus & emotions. My fav moments are the father & son moments, as when Sam arrives at Kevin's hidden place & Kevin embraces his son with so much love. And later when they are on their way to the portal & Sam tells his father of what life is now out in the real world. Kevin tells his son that he had given up the Grid easily if he had been given just one more day with him. There is a lot of love in this film! I guess, if you must say something negative, even if it isn't, is that the title character, Tron himself, is very much a secondary, yet important character. But that is given a proper explanation as to why that is, but it is a strange angle to put such an important character in the backseat. Absolutely agree with H regarding Cora! Unlike the Mary Sue's of today, this girl is charming & has flaws. She has personality & Olivia's acting is very much allowed to be part of the character. And although she is the last Izo & super important, she isn't the solution to THIS problem with Clu. She helps out in the struggle, makes some daring moves that risks her life, but she isn't the ultimate savor just because she is the last Izo, or for that matter the strong woman of the story. She is both damsel in distress as well as kick-ass action hero, she is vital yet not the actual solution. A real character, not a Mary Sue. For being a software deity of sorts she is perhaps one of the most human characters of this story! Very realistic. Besides for Clu's CGI face the effects have otherwise aged very well in the last decade, in fact they haven't aged & that's the point. If this had been made today, besides for the digital faces, everything had looked the same today. The led suits are some of the coolest sci-fi outfits in perhaps decades! And that was real clothing with lights in it! And I wanna thank H for telling me something I was actually never aware of even if I should have been considering so many times I've seen Tron legacy. The film indeed does not have that many locations taking place inside of the Grid. But the film & the effects & how it's filmed gives the impression that the Grid is so much larger, we just don't have time to see it. And I even think that was the intent, it IS more than what we never see & even if we don't see it it's still there. I highly recommend Tron Legacy, especially to Tron fans but to all sci-fi & fantasy fans alike. Very sad that a sequel will likely never happen. But the damage with that is not so severe regardless because the Tron saga can end with this open, happy & positive ending that Legacy provides. Just as Sam & Cora faces the new rays of the new dawn, what happens next can be whatever you want it to be from there on. If only Disney could remember how they USED to make films, & not so very long ago either!
