Bumbarash (1971) 1st episode

Troubled times of the Civil War. Private Bumbarash returns from Austrian captivity to his native village, where everyone, including his beloved girl, considers him dead. The power in the village changes periodically: the red ones are replaced by whites, and the whites are replaced by greens. Bumbarash is trying to survive in all the chaos and regain his beloved.
This plot outline is revealed to the audience by the Ukrainian Soviet two-part musical television film produced by the 1971 film studio named after. A. Dovzhenko based on early works and the story of the same name by Arkady Gaidar. Today it ranks 43rd in the list of the 100 best films in the history of Ukrainian cinema. The already experienced director Abram Naroditsky began the filming process, but the artistic council did not really like the initial material, so they began to look for another director to join him. Only Nikolai Rasheev turned out to be free, who had only two filmed short films behind him, but dreamed of a big movie. On May 1, 1972, the film was released on Soviet screens. Thanks to the holiday, she was seen by a huge number of spectators. The film was a stunning success.

Mikhail Kononov auditioned for the main role, but the attention of director Nikolai Rasheev was attracted by Taganka Theater actor Valery Zolotukhin. He really wanted to act, so he invited the director to watch him not only on the theater stage. The meeting was scheduled in the church, where Zolotukhin sang at the all-night service... Having learned that there was another contender for the role, the actor said: “If you want to make a good film, take Kononov, and if you want to look into eternity, take me.” The director was captivated by the pressure and approved Zolotukhin. In the role of Atamansha Sonya, the director saw only Ekaterina Vasilyeva, whom he had known since his student days, but another candidate was imposed on him. We managed to recruit about thirty extras, although much more were needed. Therefore, when filming a scene when the government in the village is constantly changing, I had to resort to a trick. They filmed an episode with the arrival of the “reds”, then they dressed the extras as “whites”, and after filming the episode with the “whites”, they dressed everyone up as “greens”.
The film was filmed in the Kanevsky district of the Cherkasy region - not far from these places Arkady Gaidar fought and died in 1941. For location shooting, we looked for an abandoned village, vast expanses around and an abandoned railway. All this was found near a large pit at the Kanev hydroelectric power station. A few years after filming, the hydroelectric power station began to be completed - the pit was flooded with water, and the villages were resettled.
