  • A pilgrimage is a journey of moral or spiritual significance. Pilgrimages take many forms, but are often to specific locations that are of importance to a person's beliefs and faith. There are pilgrimages all over the world, and anyone can basically turn a journey to someplace they travel to into a pilgrimage if they view it as a “sacred journey.” Anime fans, for example, visit sites in Japan from their favorite anime. The 88 Temple Shikoku, Japan Pilgrimage is among the world’s great pilgrimages. It is also rather unique, in that unlike the Haj or Camino de Santiago, the pilgrimage is circular. There is no single destination that the pilgrim is trying to get to. There is no starting point and no ending point. It is an endless loop around the temples which travel around the island of Shikoku but do not circumambulate anything. While many people may repeat a pilgrimage, perhaps no pilgrimage is repeated as frequently as the Shikoku pilgrimage where large numbers of people repeat the 1200km pilgrimage tens and hundreds of times. For many people, the pilgrimage never really ends as they go around and around, picking up where they left off. Many 88 temple pilgrims catch what is called Ohenro-byo, or pilgrimage sickness. This 3-minute film takes a brief look at the Shikoku 88 temple pilgrimage as addiction.
Ohenrobyo (Pilgrimage Addiction) is real. Once you catch it, you just want to go around and around Shikoku visiting the 88 Temples (of the Shikoku pilgrimage). Ohenrobyo can save you from Covid blues.

Great video! I havent dont the pilgrimage but I've been thinking about it for YEARS and should hopefully finally do it in 2024. I hope I dont catch this "addiction", but at the same time, I kind of hope that I do? haha

It is a magical experience. There is no right way nor wrong way to visit them. You can do all at once or in pieces. You can walk or go by bus or car. Before Covid, I was putting together a bus trip in English to visit them all. Perhaps I will try and rearrange it in the future.
