  • Really wanted to take a look at the filipino martial arts, so we checked out a seminar from Bobby Taboada. Who is a grand master in Arnis. I did not expect the quick and explosive movements from him, really amazing display and great seminar.
PS: Does the Balintawak just represent the place of where he comes from or is it the name?

I attended this seminar and it was phenomenal.
    It is Bobby Taboada Balintawak.
Richard Cotterill, the 2nd lightening fast gentleman in the video arranged this seminar and is Bobby's European Instructor of, 30 years, who I train under ( I am an Instructor in Scotland).
People there were from all over Europe; England, Scotland, Belgium, Slovakia, Check Republic and more.
The system can be used for stick, knife and empty hand and is for self defence not competition.
The drills are designed to generate speed and power.
I am happy to answer any questions or provide info on where to find more 🙂🙂🙂

Wouldn't this be useful for non firearm encounter of police forces for crowd control? I wonder how many police forces have adapted this martial arts. I have seen a video here on UA-cam about a police department somewhere in California training for this particular martial art. I can see a police baton standing for a kali stick.

There is also competition for these kind of Martial arts/sports in "Palarong Pambansa" where the Elementary/High school/College students will perform in groups. (Single or double sticks category and judge by its Uniformity, snappiness) There is also actual combat mostly single padded stick. In these version though is less lethal compared to Balintawak/Cebu version where you aim most on fatal body parts like throat. But still just a little adjustment for it to be more fatal.

The stick is the first level of this training. It is used in lieu of the real weapons, which are bolos and knives. But the training is also applicable to bare hands. If you watch the Bourne movies and many other films that featured close contact fighting, it is usually escrima/Arnie/kali. The 3 names are interchangeable. One of its unique principles is that the empty hands technique meant that you can improvise your weapons if you so choose. Matt Damon’s Bourne used a ball pen and a book in the films. You can even use a rolled up news paper. Even soft materials like towels or scarves can be used as weapons for trapping and strangling opponents. That is the beauty of the Filipino martial arts.

I totally agree any form of physical martial arts to toughen up mind & body is good on a younger age, if it is done correctly an in an educational manner off course. Ohhh really I was wondering if people would take their sticks with them where ever they go.

@@pinoyroots I don't think you need to bring sticks where ever you go to use this martial art. How I see KALI/ESKRIMA/ARNIS is that it is a martial art that uses weapons and it is not limited to one weapon only. The practice allows you to use any object as a weapon (pencil, ballpen, small knife, tree branches, barbecue sticks, chopsticks, and so on) and you can use these everyday objects as your weapon for self-defense whenever you get attacked. So, learning this martial art is really for your self-defense and can be used for close combat which for me is more practical than karate or kung fu which I think focuses on the beauty of it as an art than for self-defense or warfares.

He is the Godfather to Bruce Lee’s first child, one of only 3/4 people approved by him to teach JKD, and the original MMA practitioner. When Bruce Lee was studying other fighting styles Dan Inosanto was the one who insisted Bruce Lee incorporate effective techniques in other art forms or disciplines rather than admire them. Dan Inosanto was also Bruce Lee’s FMA teacher. I believe he taught Bruce Lee the nunchucks.

I felt the butterfly in my stomach seeing this. Feeling I had growing up everytime my father tells us, time to practice, get your eskrima sticks. Old man was tough on my brothers . So when arnis was introduced in high school as part of the curriculum, there is less blistering. I always hated when my brother tells me , the callous is a blessing. What I disliked was the sensitivity training since it is very repetitive but now looking back, kinda thankful I did this.

Teacher's of Arnis usually start teaching their students with two sticks, then one stick. Then they advance using knife, then empty hand technique. You can farther advance using a bolo or blade (swords) and realized that it's concept and movements are the same, weither you use sticks, swords or empty hand in fighting. It's really great!

Not sure if you got info about the terminology differences, but I just wanted to chime in if not. The terms for Filipino Martial Arts differ by where in the place you learn it from. It could be Silat in the south, Escrima in the north, or Arnis in Cebu, where SGM Bobby and I are from. The Philippines is an archipelago, so the terminology is dependent on the language of the island you're from. Cebu uses Bisaya, which borrows a lot of Spanish. Arnis is a loan word from the Spanish for harness, or armor, arnes. For simplicity, Kali tends to be a catch-all term, or if you want to be politically considerate, Filipino Martial Arts (FMA) works, too. Glad to see folks appreciating the art. Mabuhay. Be well.

Learned from my great grandpa, my grandpa died early.. I have been teaching the old family version to my kids(2 girls & 2 boys)... Unfortunately my boys are more taken up with basketball than Arnis.... But at least they reached the empty hands level, so I'm satisfied.
My 2nd girl is considered a high expert if compared to the regular Kali/arnis... But we don't advertise it... We are more on the sticks, then bolos/swords and finally empty hands... We're not so on knives.

FMA is also used by special forces around the world some of them also had their special training with kali masters in th PHil.. FMA is also used in movies like John Wick, Hitman, Taken sequels, The Hunted, The Bourne sequels(Jason Bourne) just to name of few.

There are few if any modern militaries that teach hand to hand or non shooting techniques in detail. Within the US military, depending on the branch you would have to request for extra training, and depending on your job, you may or may nor be given permission. Even the more highly trained and specialized units don't get this kind of training, because most people will never have a need to use it in modern combat.

Actually, as a practitioner in Balintawak under Master Abecia, we train with sticks, so that the muscle memory, the principles, the movements in our training with the sticks can also be used similarly with barehands. We see sticks only as the extension of our hands. And we don't have a competition most likely because it will become sports. Balintawak is not for sports, it's designed to kill.

if you think he's fast, consider that he's in his 70s and their are other men and women who have that speed also....my family is blessed with those genetics also.....as for the names....on the main island of Luzon, in the north we call arnis the use of weapons, whereas escrima is the term used to play with the sticks....other parts of the country may call escrima like we term Arnis and use it for both....kali is mainly used in the southern parts of the country like Visaya and Mindinao
