- I've been watching him for my entire life
I hate the air he breathes, his foolish decrees, his words so contrived
& I hate the way the townspeople gather outside
they hang on every breath, cling to his chest, home to his heart full of pride
the oracle told him to beware the ides
& I'd be lying if I said I wasn't wishing for untimely death or demise
or am I just wishing I could be like you?
that the people would see me too as a poet
and not just the muse
oh it's not true, I don't wish harm upon you
from birth we've been like brothers, of different mothers, within the spirit of the same womb
may the gods strike me down if I forsake you
frater meus
you're beautifully made & to you I'm forever grateful
I'll never forget that you showed me to make art
and I know the love you showed me came from a pure & noble heart
I love you & if you want I'll call you king
but why do I lie awake each night thinking
instead of you, it should be me?
something wicked this way comes
& as I set to face it I'm unsure should I embrace it, should I run?
what motivates me - hatred or is it love?
what's more wrong - that I too wish to be great or my mother wished she'd had a son?
and even if I can't be the one, maybe I could at least help make way for him until the day that he comes
maybe my name could also be known -
that I helped return good to the people
and restored greatness to Rome
Male Chorus:
BRUTUS, BRUTUS, BRUTUS, BRUTUS (x4)
my name is brutus and my name means heavy
so with a heavy heart I'll guide this dagger into the heart of my enemy
my whole life you were a teacher and friend to me
please know my actions are not motivated only by envy
I too have a destiny
this death will be art
the people will speak of this day from near and afar
this event will be history
& I'll be great too
I don't want what you have
I wanna be you
I always knew I could be the one
though I feel the endless pain of being & I am scorched by the sun
of humble origins and born of the cursed sex
my name is Brutus but the people will call me Rex

Sure! Per the Christian Bible, there was a prophecy about John the Baptist made before his birth (both immediately before: Luke 1:17 and over 600 years before Isaiah 40:3) that he would prepare the people of Israel for Jesus and his teachings. The phrases used are "prepare the way for the Lord" and "he will...make ready a people prepared for the Lord".

"I don't want what you have, I wanna be you" hits me like a freight train every time. god.
I think that, to me, it represents how I know that even if I got everything I wanted, I still wouldn't be taken as seriously as a man would have been, I still would have to keep re-proving myself constantly. I don't wish I was a man, but when I see how perceptions of me are altered because of my gender while I see men being viewed exactly how I want to be viewed, it sometimes feels like I do. I'm not sure if this is what was meant, but it hits close to home for me.

The opening chant is sampled from Ricreazione divertita (Finale) by Ennio Morricone. It’s an Italian chant that names popular 70’s Italian TV shows, and ends the sentence with “we can’t get any dumber than this.” The song was part of a score for an Italian movie called “A Mother’s Heart.”

more interesting, Brutus IS remembered throughout history but as a betrayer and wicked, not a great ruler. This coupled with the female rage idea could mean that when women fight back against men they are seen as "b*tches"
“My name is Brutus but the people will call me Rex” gave me MAD chills when I first heard it.

The agony in “I don’t want what you have I want to be you” resonates with me so much. I’m a teacher and our principal always gets the recognition of the work his female employees work for. It’s torture watching him be congratulated for the work I and other women around him have contributed. This song has the same rabid energy I feel
Get over yourself. Probably teaching your students all this ideological rot in this comment section. This song and it’s message is garbage. There’s a reason tiktok is pushing this dogsh*t on our kids.
Let's be real. Not a single student will ever remember or give credit to the principal for all the teachers work to make them who they become in the future. Students will forever give you credit for your dedication and work to change their life.
You should watch blood in blood out the movie literally had every poor kid become gang members, and this was a childhood thing, like they all want to be leaders and only kill their own to get to the top

For the past week, I have not been able to get the line: "I always knew I'd be the one, though I feel the endless pain of being and I am scorched by the sun." (2:58) Out of my head. i forever love how this song is about brutus and the assassination of julius ceaser but also the singer incorporating her own feelings into the lyrics. like the lines about being a woman, etc.
Wicked and dark, just the way I like it.
This says everything that i couldnt find the words for. The rage of having been born a woman, in a world built by men, and feeling such intense jealousy and self-hatred that ill never be a man. When main characters in media default to a man, when ill never be a doctor, lawyer, politician, but a "female" doctor, a "female" lawyer, a "female" politician, when gender roles engrained into society teaches girls and boys that women are less capable or logical or rational, when these boys grow up to see/treat women as a different species entirely, when every author i enjoy writes women more two-dimensionally than their male counterparts. Listening to this i finally feel like a human being, not just a "woman". This sort of media really help me accept the fact that i shouldn't have to be a man to feel like a person.
beautiful words. this is the same feeling that brought me to writing this song… im glad it speaks to you. much love to you. stay strong.
@@buttresswhy did you choose the perspective of the historic figure of Brutus (a man) to write a song about womanhood?
Don't know if you're into games but The Last of Us Part 2 has two main protagonists who are some of the most well-written multidimensional female characters I've seen in media.
If this is really your concept of the world you really need to get out more and get out of your echo chamber. Everything is this world is catered towards women. Men build things for the people they love(women and children). Women are wonderful and contribute a lot to society. What also makes a women so damn special if she’s not a man and has the ability to creat future generations.
@@will75jwe don't want to be special just because we're incubators to your offspring. We want to be special because we have minds and opinions and creativity. Independent of what we can give to men.
We want to build things in our name that is remembered. We don't want to be your muses (you build things for us) We want to be creators. Not just of babies but of concepts, timeless things like huge buildings, books, legacy.
THAT is the difference.
"everything is catered towards women" in a way, maybe. Maybe you want to make stuff for us. But you also make the whole of society to get cater to your needs. Women's rights are just allowed as long as they serve you.
We want to make stuff for ourselves! We don't want you to do things for us while we sit and watch you pretending as if you know what we want. WE know what WE want and we want to make it FOR OURSELVES

This song and its video works well as a barometer of how likely a person and I are to have compatible personalities/Interests.
In my opinion this absolutely leaps over the boundary of music video and lands with both steady feet in the realm of theatrical arts. It is ART.
Beyond even that is the badass beauty and grace of using that small space of time allotted a video to also give credit to those who worked beside you to bring a vision to life. There's of course the possibility that this is commonly done in genres I'm unfamiliar with but I know that I personally have never seen this sort of outro before, that gives such clear and artistic credit like that.. maybe Die Antwoord?? Not sure, but this one struck me as particularly unique, it radiates an energy that feels like a skillful balance of power and humility .yeah I ramble, I know.

I love the absolute grit you put into certain words, it really conveys the essence of the song, the absolute anger and discontent with staying in your place because of your sex. It's very raw and personal. It's incredibly powerful.
Wow I can't believe I'm finding this now, I don't think I've ever heard something like this before. It's rap but the voice is stark and emotional, the flow is almost slam poetry-like, almost as if she's voice acting for a show or movie

I've been watching him for my entire life

I love this song so much, it has so much anger but it's not beautiful anger. It's jealous, bitter, spiteful anger that tells a very bitter story without mellowing anything down. Usually when I see angry songs about females it's either romanticized or made to seem like the lady was crazy or it simply doesn't go in-depth into her anger like this. Most times it just tells but this shows and every sentence has so many layers of experience and emotion...
Amazing song, Soul searching lyrics... I love your artistry
There’s something about the background music being airy and almost light sounding while simultaneously sounding like someone slowly snapping. It’s so distant and like the innocence of a nursery rhyme, but disconnect and disjointed similar to the female experience of feminine performance. Maybe I’m looking too deeply into this, but you capture the rage simmering in our guts at all times, and the fake laugh and smile we put on to make men feel comfortable even when they’re causing the discomfort themselves. Beautifully done.
Most of us just want to be happy yknow, no reason to go around being angry at people all the time. Afterall, most of the time people are trying to do right, they can't read your mind
I love how this combines elements from Macbeth, Julius Caesar, and also a bit of Greek Tragedy with the Chorus. A splendid re-imagination of the Classics, and the "people would see me as a poet and not just the muse" was so powerful and resounding.
Lyrics:
I've been watching him for my entire life.
I hate the air he breathes, his foolish decrees, his words so contrived
and I hate the way the townspeople gather outside
they hang on every breath, cling to his chest, home to his heart full of pride.
the oracle told him to beware the ides
and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't wishing for untimely death or demise
or am I just wishing I could be like you?
that the people would see me too as a poet,
and not just the muse!
oh it's not true, I don't wish harm upon you
from birth we've been like brothers, of different mothers, within the spirit of the same womb.
may the gods strike me down if I forsake you
frater meus.
you're beautifully made and to you I'm forever grateful!
I'll never forget that you showed me to make art
and I know the love you showed me came from a pure & noble heart.
I love you and if you want I'll call you king
but why do I lie awake each night thinking
instead of you, it should be me?
something wicked this way comes
and as I set to face it I'm unsure should I embrace it, should I run?
what motivates me - hatred or is it love?
what's more wrong - that I too wish to be great or my mother wished she'd had a son?
and even if I can't be the one, maybe I could at least help make way for him until the day that he comes!
maybe my name could also be known -
that I helped return good to the people
and restored greatness to Rome!

My daughter introduced me to this song and I’ve been listening to it every day since. I’ve been listening to all of the other songs. I’m obsessed. ❤❤❤❤
@kazuhgifs thank you. She keeps giving me all these songs I’ve never heard before and I keep adding them to my playlists.
@lowercase3nikolaiBrutus II, greatness! I’m so in awe of her editing, production, acting, and it just keeps getting better! What do you think of it? This one definitely is multi talented and needs to be seen and get more views than what she’s got this far.
Who would have known that the instrumental of this would become a worldwide horror song?
I absolutely adore this piece, the lyrics give me life. I think that as women we sometimes compete so hard to be recognized at all that we come to accept recognition as the only possible end goal. Like, on TV, a lot of the time if a girl manages to become “one of the boys” by proving how tough she is then that’s her big accomplishment, she’s learned how to keep up and we’re supposed to celebrate that, but there’s no option for her to surpass them. We just accept our supporting role and scraps of recognition. I don’t really know how to explain it, but there’s a very unique form of empowerment in Brutus’s envy and desperation and rage, even when it’s brutal and pathetic. Just the idea that a woman could be loved and respected enough to be held up as a brother by a powerful patriarch and still yearn for more makes this song a real emotional punch in the gut. I hope I understood a little of what you meant to say with this one, your work is greatly appreciated.
Buttress, you have inspired my art, school of thought, and the way I interpret the environment around me. Thank you for giving your life to your art and vision, and inspiring others to do the same, I'm eternally grateful for you showing me there's another way to live.
this is so nice thank you
Hi
This song is such an "Eldest Daughter" bop
I feel like this is what it’s like when toxic families choose the brothers over the sisters and put them on such a high pedestal and just make us extra caregivers. The hate and anger we feel because of it because we too as women have a destiny and a chance to be amazing and great.
That was f****** amazing. I'm almost 51 and girl you blew me away! To see that you know Shakespeare, you know the story of Julius Caesar and that you mentioned the Ides of March.
That was the day that my father died. I am always aware of the Ides of March.
I was 7 years old.
And I'm.
Still.
Here.
I'm waiting...
Don't forget the third .

oooooooo omg omg omg, I'm super excited. I adore your music!
Yessss! I love this song sm so this is really exciting!
Dude YESSSS. The original already lives rent free in my head an embarrassing amount of the time. Which bothers me NONE because the beauty of it is how inspired it's made me to create my own art. The first being a drawing called Mad Muse after I'd had artists block for so long that an emptiness was beginning to settle in... That hollowness that paradoxically makes your body feel too heavy to drag around. ANYways! I've found that listening to your music shakes up my insides enough that it knocks the block loose.
Always excited to hear new shit!!
oh shit. i'm back for my weekly dose of the hardest bars in history and now there's a sequel!!!
HOLY SHIT THE FACT THAT I FOUND YOUR MUSIC JUST TWO WEEKS AGO. HERE FOR THE BEST COMBACK FR
"I DON'T WANT WHAT YOU HAVE, I WANTED TO BE YOU" This hits so hard
This song is so raw and makes me feel so much but I can't name the feeling
Anger
Actual female rage. Not the romanticized ones from tiktok. The true raw anger and pain
@@v.xien.that is the shit from twittok. This literally goes on about the envy of womanhood. Just remember that your rage is viewed the same way that you view manlet rage lol. It’s fine to acknowledge your rage, but do not believe that to be consumed by it is to be powerful.
I recently found this on my discover weekly on spotify, and i cant explain how much i fucking love it. Idk why but i get like poetry and rap and the sound. Its just so unmatched and unique and fresh and holy fuck, the lyrics?! The story its telling! im fangirling over this powerhouse of a woman. I wish i discovered her earlier
It really reminds me of slam poetry but it's certainly a style completely separate from everything I've heard before.
I mean, RAP literally stands for "Rhythm And Poetry"
Too bad she hasn't released anything recently.
I get so sad when i only see videos with the instrumental because the lyrics are fireeee
real!!
Tbh, when it's just instrumental the song hits diffirent, and in a good way.

The fact that the instrumental is made to sound heavy too is actually insane to me, I felt the pure rage and hatred come through so well oh my god??? You did a great job

being a woman feels like this song
A plumber wises everyday to be a CEO. A CEO wishes everyday to be a plumber. But they both only want the other for a day- no more.
For women, the idea making great name, making history, being great leader or in power is attractive and romantic since they were never conditioned or pressured to those things. So These values in them usually come from their own wants and desire.
For men, when you are told your entire life that you do those things is your only value- even in this song, the allusion the woman is already putting the pressure on her future son to be that thing- this is why it’s always never simple. Did Caesar want to be a great leader? Did he have a choice in what he did? We sometimes give men too much Agency and women too Little- in Reality the Woman Born in poverty that became a prostitute had equal amount of Agency as did a Man Born in a Nobel House to be a great Military General.
The concept of the gender dynamic is simple: would you rather be a man, who will be expected to do great things or a woman who is not expected to do great things.
I’ve always thought, while the woman in this song is tearing her heart out in agony about how she wants what he has and be him, the man is quite in his Attitude, perhaps he also feels the same: “I wished I had what you have and I were you, as well.”
Thinking like that nowday-->Victim/misandric/toxic mentality
the way she says “i wanna be YOU” always sends shivers down my spine
1:05 “Frater meus” meaning: brother my. Such great use of vocabulary and amazing choreography. No part of this is not a masterpiece bravo!
Or my brother.
My latin teacher played this song the other day, best class ever
"That the people would see me, too, as a poet
and not just the muse"
Holy shit. Thank you for this song. I basically yell this into the void on a daily basis.
" I don't want what you have I want to be you!" 🙏🏽
the rage in this is so fantastic.
“I don’t want what you have, I wanna be YOU.” I got chills omg what
I love how it feels like spoken word poetry. Slam poetry but it’s musical. Very womanhood song the I wanna be the poet not just the muse line hits so different
"Though I feel the endless pain of being
And I am scorched by the sun"
they just came up with this shit? outta nowhere? wild.
Top notch
“I don’t want what you have, I wanna be you”
I never hear the feeling of this described in such words.
oh love! i love this! what a great piece of art you have made 😭
