  • Why Pilots Loved Flying the Thud
The Republic F-105 Thunderchief is a supersonic fighter-bomber designed to carry-out low-altitude strikes against strategic targets. The F-105 evolved from a nuclear strike plane to become a versatile plane with a variety of unique features. These planes were vital to the early stages of the Vietnam War, and the F-105 was eventually chosen to carry out the Wild Weasel role which is one of the most deadly missions in the history of the United States Air Force. What is Wild Weasel and what happened to the iconic F-105?

My Uncle flew F105's in the mid 60's. Loved the plane, was fast down low, carried a good load of bombs and brought him home! He was in a book awhile back for his 100th mission instead of taking a Mild Run he went and bombed Hanoi as best as he good to get back for losing a lot of friends! Glen Gidel is his name!

I watched this video because I wanted to know the reason for the title, "Why Pilots Loved Flying the Thud". I'm disappointed that this was not even addressed.

Dad was a THUD pilot, finished his 100 missions in January 1966. I think every pilot loved flying the machine they were assigned. The machine that took you into battle and hopefully brought you back to base. Speed was probably the main drive for most THUD pilots. Flying in hotter then ordered and then lighting the afterburner to get out of dodge. The THUD pilot song, gives a bit of the feeling back in the day. ua-cam.com/video/Wrn-Q6__MWk/v-deo.html Cheers to my namesake and all THUD pilots.

What impressed me the most about the F-105 was the bravery of its pilots..May God bless them all.

The best part about this aircraft is that it's easy to work on. If you can't work on a Thud...you are a DUD//good luck if you impact earth rocks that you flew into.

Some errors/ perhaps typos I found:
7:34 Pretty sure that's MK.82 bomb or in general just a "dumb" bomb, not an ECM pod as labeled.
7:49 That's clearly not a Sidewinder. That thing is an AGM-45 Shrike used for SEAD/DEAD aka "Wild Weasel" mission profile.
In the end, the video was well done, however, the video's tittle in question is misleading since that question isn't even answered during the video, as stated by another fellow here in the comment section.
Fun Fact: The nickname "Thud" was given not as short for "Thunderchief" (although prob?), but for the sound people said it did when crashing.

I’ve heard both stories about the ‘Thud’ nickname. It was the sound it made when hitting the ground, or it’s named after Chief Thunderthud from Howdy Doody.
I think the latter was dreamed up to provide a more palatable story than the former.

No, it's true, in the early 1960's when F105's were stationed in West Germany is where they got the nickname, if you were an American stationed in West Germany during the Cold War the only television station you can watch is Armed Forces Network (AFN), at the time in the early 60's when F105 units were being built up in West Germany the Howdy Doody Show was played on heavy rotation on AFN giving the pilots, especially one's with children, lot's of exposure to Chief Thunderthud, it was just a natural thing that they adopted the nickname, Thunderchief being the official name of the aircraft was originally substituted as Thunderthud by the airmen stationed over there with it eventually just being shortened to Thud, it'd already had the nickname when it was carried to Thailand by crews who'd already been in West Germany, most likely because of it's long term use there at one point anyone who'd already been with them in West Germany had been gone so naturally over time the true origins of the name had faded from memory and was replaced with the myth that it got it's nickname because that's the sound it made when it hit the ground, the argument could be made that since far more people used it's nickname in that manner that is the true reason it was called that but the reality is it'd already had that name before it saw service in southeast Asia.

The f105 is my 3rd favorite aircraft it’s a shame that gijian made it absolutely useless because of F4C’s

I was a kid growing up near MacDill AFB during the Vietnam War. I used to bug fighter pilots all the time and Thud pilots tended to be more humble than F4 pilots. They told me they loved their Thuds because they could sustain huge damage as in missing chunks and still return to base.

No they weren't, the vast majority were shot down by ground fire, the MIG's wouldn't tangle with them, they'd make one pass down through a formation of bomb loaded F105's that were inbound to a target and just keep going, hardly heroic, that's outright cowardly when it comes to being fighter pilots.
In a single day when Vietnamese pilots were tricked into thinking that F4's were bomb loaded F105's and attempted that trick half of North Vietnam's entire inventory of MIG21's was shot down without a single US aircraft being lost, there's a Noth Vietnamese pilot that's on tape crying to his ground controller "You said there was nothing but F105's up here" as he was being shot down, he died crying his eyes out like a coward, North Vietnam suffered such grievice losses to their MIG21 fleet that day they grounded them indefinitely for fear of losing any more.
As far as the F105's dogfighting record goes the MIG pilots who were stupid enough to engage an F105 after it'd dropped it's bombs lost, of the 27.5 MIG kills racked up by F105's (one was shared with a Navy F4), 24.5 of them were gun kills .

EF-105? No F-105F or G model. Wild Weasels.

    • @dukecraig2402
      @dukecraig2402 16 днів тому

No, the F-105F was the 2 seat trainer, the initial destination of the Wild Weasel variant was EF-105F because they were converted from F-105F's, after that the purpose built Wild Weasels were designated F-105G.
