I dated a Persian guy for a while and we talked about getting married a few times. He said he wanted to take me to meet his family in Iran before we did and I was like NOPE. He didn’t understand why I wouldn’t go because he had never had to feel afraid when being there like I would’ve. And I told him that if we had kids, I would never let them go there either, and he was offended by that. Like, sorry dude, but if he took our kids there, there would be nothing I could do if he didn’t want to bring them back to America, and I couldn’t live with that possibility. We broke up soon after that conversation.

I also know that, just like in most places all over the world, the extremism we see doesn’t represent the majority of the people. I don’t have a problem with the Iranian people, I have a problem with the people Iranians let govern them. There are nearly 90 million people in Iran. If there were enough of them that didn’t go along with the extremist ideologies of those in charge, they would overthrow their government and install leaders that are more representative of the majority of the population. Until that happens, no way would I ever even entertain the thought of visiting. This video was about an IRANIAN man who had false charges put on him by the government of Iran, what do you think they would do to someone like me?

While I lived in the Middle East in the 1990’s I was able to get a tourist visa to visit Iran. I had to be escorted by one of their government tour guides. He ended up being very friendly; in fact, he and his wife had attended an university in the USA until they had to return in 1978. Iranians like to call themselves Persians and are well educated. I was surprised how nicely I was treated. A few times I was able to individually talk one to one with Iranians about their government. ( They would bring it up) No one cares for the government; in fact, the government officials all have to ride in bullet proof vehicles.

That's a fact.Of course not all of them but the majority are Persians and speak Persian language (also called Farsi or Parsi) as native language. Some of the other ethnicities also speak a dialect of Persian and there are some ethnicities which speak different kinds of languages like Turkish, Baluchi, Kurdish etc. Until 1935 the official name of the country was Persia. At this year Reza Shah the king of Iran requested foreign delegates to use the term of Iran instead of Persia which I think personally was a mistake since it broke up the bridge between ancient Persia and today's Iran. That's why some people get confused and think Iranians aren't Persian, like you did. Didn't you visit the historical sites like Persepolis or Pasargadae? If you did you should've realized Iran and Persia are the same thing. I hope I was able to explain it a little.

I'm not surprised a bit by this hostage situation in Iran. Iran has been exchanging hostages for money for the past 4 decades and it won't stop. I think Iranian citizens are dilutional in terms of traveling to their home country (if they are dual citizens) since they always think these circumstances are very isolated which is far from the truth. Iran recently released several Iranian-British citizens who had been incarcerated for years in exchange for cash. As I said, these are not the last of it.

It's quite a bit different for Iranian-Americans. A lot of the Iranian diaspora travels back and forth, because while the Iranian regime is definitely authoritarian, it's not on the same scale as the North Korean regime.

soft ball interview. Any American who doesn't consider that Iran will use them for geopolitical leverage if they travel there is either ignorant or stupid. He should have known better and we all paid a high price to get him out. Make every American who asks for a passport sign a form that states that their Citizenship will be immediately revoked if they travel to Iran.

As someone who has ALL his family over there and has no political involvement in any countries i found it close to impossible to get my fam visitor visa to visit me here. I have been debating to visit them last eight years and never did it. Instead, I gathered them all in neighboring countries like turkey to spend a week together.

An observation, not intended as criticism in any way.
The emotional engagement of the host is clearly well intended; but it feels strangely "superimposed", especially because this is about so horrendous experiences. It seems the emotions and their expression are best left entirely to the person who experienced such an ordeal. One might think the motive of sharing the grief, of "not being a "neutral bystander", which appears to guide the host, should lend her expression of emotions veracity, but it seems when it comes to borderline experiences, only the person who made them, can act on them with authenticity. But again, the good intentions behind the conduct of this interview are clearly visible and we have to acknowledge the challenge, a conversation about such extreme experiences poses to the interviewer!

He is from there, so the US shouldn’t waste as many resources in negotiating his release. He chose to travel to his motherland voluntarily with an Iranian passport. It’s not the same as an American born journalist being detained in Russia.

How can the authorities on both sides trust dual citizens, American-Iranian? During the WWII, the Japanese living in the USA were taken to the camp. They were refused of the basic rights, while some of their properties were confiscated.
They can’t. “Japanese-Americans” were spying on the US by the hundreds if not thousands. They had exact locations and scheduled movements of everything in Honolulu, which along with Rosevelt pulling a Netanyahu and ignoring endless reports of an impending attack, gave the Japanese fighters and subs the ultimate advantage trifecta: complete surprise, accurate intelligence, and assistance by the enemy commanders.
