Regular hearing aids weren't working for little Emma. Three weeks after surgery, her cochlear implant was activated and she was all smiles and laughs.

I think we're getting a little nit picky here. By "normal" they mean average, or like the mass majority of others, which is just Objectively true. It's not an offensive term, it's not being used in a degrading way, we're getting offended over the smallest of things
