I've owned my 4.0 YJ since 1992 and it has 66,000 miles. It's locked, lifted, winched and every time I touch it I get a chubby. Off road, it's not a beast...it's a gekko...quiet, capable, and sticky. Nearly 30 years with the same Jeep, and I can't say enough good things about it. Taught two generations of kids how to drive stick, been with me on Jamborees and trails from Colorado to Texas, New Jersey, Tennessee, North Carolina, New York, Penna and Massatwochits. It was born to be off road, and it still drives straight and true at 70 MPH. What an amazing piece of American engineering.
Love hearing that story & review Chump Change! I loved my '06 TJ (last of the 4.0L I), but health took that away so hopefully, I can scrounge up a YJ for a daily driver as well as a fun 4x4 to wheel in. While it had it's weakness I loved the simplicity of the YJ & CJ, and would love to go back to a carb if I ever have a chance to get one. This video is way above my price range but has me salivating.

The TJ got coil springs instead of the dependable leaf springs, the grill of a tj sucks worse than the wrongler ever could, and the tj has few parts that interchange with the prior models. Give me a YJ that isn’t spoiled with coil springs and testosterone-compensating headlights. I don’t mean the shape- I mean the led headlight me-too sheep show.
Having known Roche for 16 years, I would love to see the outtakes... Typically when he starts talking, he keeps going. Probably one of the nicest, most genuine dudes I have ever had the pleasure of calling a friend. I remember when his Jeep got stolen. Just like most things in his life, it makes for a great story.
I have a ‘92 YJ with a 2.5 inch lift. For right now, the 2.5 4 cylinder, 5 speed manual. That being said, I ran the following on the Western Slope in Colorado this summer with no issues: Hurricane pass, Cork Screw, California Gulch, Cinnamon Pass, Engineer Pass, Imogene pass, Ophir pass, Black Bear and Yankee Boy Basin. I was running with guys that has “built” Gladiators and I did as good, if not better in some situations. Im sold on my YJ.
this YJ is the next level, luv the history and that you kept some of the durable pieces and the dash, owned mine since new in 89, did much milder build replacing the D35 with D44 from XJ - the peugot tranny with nv3550 out of TJ rubi - added mopar MPI kit to the 4.2L - the trend here all jeep parts but better , since 2017 have driven it to and over Rubicon and Moab while still on 33's from Canada , not sure will take it to the next level like yours which also looks incredible - but if I do this is inspiration, thanks for sharing
Love my completely stock 1995 rio grande. 17.6 mpg last tank of gas. Dead simple vehicle. Probably my favorite vehicle I’ve owned. I’ve thought about mods but I just like it how it is.
This guy complains about the wheel options but I just bought adapters and put on trd Tacoma rims and tires. Not really a problem. The np231 can handle v8 power easy so not really sure how that’s a problem.

My 8yr old picked orange seat belts. My 11yr old picked the green dash lights. My 15yr old helped me put a new transmission in it. It’s a fun rolling project that the family is involved in. My oldest also helped me put a 2.5 inch lift. New springs and hd shocks.

A near stock, no lift no lockers, 1966 CJ5 circumnavigated the globe north to south over 58,000 miles without a support team on its own with a PTO winch, pulleys, and rope. First all land crossing of the Darien gap, no boats. The YJ is arguably an improved version of Sand Ship Discovery. Put a winch on it and carry some ladders a determined driver can go anywhere. Less things will be broken and a lot can be learned.
Bro. with a much stronger frame, wider more flexy springs, wider track width, and the 4.0/ax-15 combo, the YJ was way better than the CJ's. Not nearly as cool, but a much better platform. (and the track bars are easy to remove and toss out)
They are great to build on. The biggest drawbacks are the front sway bars. Limiting suspension travel, and the weak Dana 35 rear. The wider track limits suspension droop too. But they are great to build. Strong platform. Stock for stock, my CJs out wheeled my YJs. But the YJ is good to build on.
The yj stands tall next to the lj Rubicon for best jeep built. The yj is stable and easy to build into a rock crawling monster, those two simple facts make it second to the lj.
Owned my 95 sahara now for 24 years. Ford 8.8 spring over in rear. stock dana 30 front with one piece Tj chrome molly, 4 inch pro comp springs in front, 3 speed auto, 4.10 gears 35 inch eagle MTR custom rockere guards rear tire carrier bumper, rock crawler front bumper ,warn 8k, detroit locker in rear aussie locker in front and only 145k on the odometer. LOVE MY YJ.... Admittedly my new JLUR lifted and 37's is a beast and awesome to drive on and offroad but I regularly just enjoy my YJ because it's freaking awesome.
Had a 91 YJ. Loved the 4.0 and 5spd. Yes I blew up the rearend and transfer case. Driving a LJ now, but I can't wait to get a YJ and do what you did to it👍
You are right Claude I blew it. The TJs had low pinion Dana 30s. I think a high pinion Dana 30 with one piece axle shafts and an 8.8 are a great match to 35” tall tires and don’t break the bank.

I have a 93 4.0 manual, I bought in 95 for $12,000.00 with 42,000 miles. It has 56,000 now. Used for hunting over the years. I don't use it for anything anymore and it sits although runs perfectly. IF, I wanted to duplicate this set up and take it to my house in Idaho and actually have a place to use it, how much (roughly) is this set up? Axels, transfere case, labor, suspension etc. This particular build caught my eye as I am not interested in an engine or trans swap, but keep what it has. Just get the 4x4 part working as it should, like this jeep in the video. Once you get the axles and transfere case does it come with instructions or is a "start cutting and welding and see what works?"
That tire carrier is one of the best looking I’ve seen. Would have appreciated seeing how well it worked. Little details like how easy you can get to your stuff make a big difference off road.
I have a YJ Sahara with TJ frame, Dana 44 rear, Slip Yoke eliminator, and easily does 80-90 on the highway. It is also cammed which sounds amazing. People think I have a v8. Lol
The YJ is a better platform than the CJ. Better frame easy to find parts. Cheap to lift. An XJ front axle doesn’t have the center disconnect but mine hasn’t been a problem. You can buy a 4 to 1 kit for the np231.
I have a 89 yj with the 30 and 35 axles , put 30 spline axles with locker in the rear and left the stock axles in the front with a e locker . All I have for power is the 4 banger . I still keep up with all the newer jeep in the club I am in . Will problem go biger when the 4 dies

Man, what an awesome build. I've done massive amounts of research to finally come up with what I needed for my 02 TJ. Sounds like he got really sound advice from some real professional people. I'm glad I had enough savvy and some common sense to come up with the combination of changes I'm making. It's a ton of research.
I put a chevy 350 in my 87 yj and put a 8.8 ford rearend kept the stock font axle and transfer case i have driven that thing hard for the last 25 years and havent broken any of the stock parts so dont always belive what you hear its all second hand information
I have a 91 yj with the 2.5l and AX5 transmission. Has a small lift on 33's and it can crawl some serious trails. I laugh when people say they suck stock. They're plenty capable.
@@HarrySituations They are as capable. A 4.0 yj with the shorter wheelbase can do more than the xj not to say the xj cant it is a beast in it's own way. Bottom line is it always comes down to the driver but if a little 4 cylinder Suzuki samurai can hang with the big boys the jeep yj can easily as well. I've never offroaded a jk but the common consensus among jeepers is the older the better. They just dont make them like they used to.

I live a bit east of Reno. I just got my first jeep, an 89 yj. I don't plan to do all the crawler stuff but I'm hoping to be able to get out with it. She needs a fair bit of work yet. It's there a good place to call or go into that you would suggest?
I have 93 YJ. Springs over TN front, under in back. (Daily driver, a bit more stable). Pro Rock 60s, A R B's front and rear. 4.7 in line 6 ( Hesco). NV 4500 tranny , Atlas 4 speed transfer 9500 lb Warn winch. Sets on 37 12.50 Truxus Mats. Front 60 has dyna Trac stub hubs. Lots more done, still lots left to do. I get 1150 on RTI ramp with leaves. Aftermarket support is great, love my yj on narrow trails where jks and jls are too wide. HIP TO BE SQUARE (headlights). Goes where I want it to.

Nice to see a YJ gets some love. People have to keep in mind that if the YJ didn't sell well, Jeep might not have been around much longer. They took a big hit in '84 sales dropped off a cliff. Mine's a '92 with a 2.5L and 5.38s. My other Jeep is also pretty unpopular even though some think they're going to be the next big thing, an M38A1/early CJ5. Keeping that one mostly stock except for going 12v. Might rebuild the trans with lower gears and do a 3:1 in the transfer case, but I want to keep running 7.00R16s.
My 89 has the base model carbed I6 and a manual five speed. It has never once left me stranded. Heats up really nice and gets up to good speed. My buddy had an LT1 swapped extended by 16 inch YJ on 45’s. Having considerable seat time in my stock beside tires and his, they are great.

Actually Peugeot transmission is good; I drove mine too hard but easy to fix a broken bearing, did not have to deal with extremely complicated shifter; you guys listen to too much online BS. A very easy transmission to work on. Upgrading leaf springs is so much easier to modify without all complications. Your viewers need to know the truth! :)
2500HD reg cab 8.1L: goods, bads and uglys. I'm looking at making my daily driver/occasional trail rider into something to go moshing the deep mud and sugar sand hills of South Jersey.

You're wrong on so many levels. One it came with high pinion d30. Two it came with np231 tcase and the 258 is far from lame. It's a tank of a motor and with the right carb it can be very well suited for trail use. They also came with excellent tf999 transmission that has granny low.
@@HarrySituations with chromoly shafts I've been running 37s for years now rock crawling no problem. Lots of factors play in here. With an underpowered light weight jeep you don't need tons to have fun. Although that was the plan since 6 years ago I'm still waiting on d30 to blow up and she refuses.
I'd love an anniversary edition or something like that that would emulate the YJ look. I think Quadratec made a JL look like a YJ if you want to check that out
Besides a flat fender the yj was the first jeep I ever liked........ styling wise... I just can't stand the way the cj looked especially in the AMC years.... my dad has a yj fixed up that I did for him with a v8 and all the goodies... it drives and wheels pretty good! Oh and whispering "falkens are better!" Lol
All those stupid comments about the YJ. The YJ wasn‘t created as a rock crawler out of the box. AMC had to survive back the days and it was designwise all about getting rid of the CJ’s roll over issues.
Hey I got a 94 with a 2.5L. I want to swap it for a 4.0L and ditch the leafs. I'd love to see some in depth set ups with coil springs or coil overs. Hope y'all see this!
I think this is a fine line. I have ran lighter tires only to have them puncture on the trail. My preference is to run a strong tire (which is inherently heavier) with a forged wheel to save weight.
I feel like when the editor was finishing the edit, he did so with headphones. Some audio balance issues. Before you are done, check with headphones speakers and cell phone.
@HarrySituations as long as you live in a state without a visual inspection you can throw most of that 80s emissions crap in the garbage. The 258 is an absolute warhorse of an engine. I've seen those go 400k miles in commercial and farm trucks hauling huge loads.

How do you put a 4:1 kit in a 231 in 2021? $3500 atlas is only way to have 4:1, you know that. I saved $100 a week for 35 weeks after my terelow kit grenaded to have 4:1 again.

my 92 has never given me any issues and its still at least 65% stock

I guess everything is relative. They are certainly more capable than say, a Liberty, but not as capable as a Cherokee or the later TJ or JK Wrangler.

I live a bit east of Reno. I just got my first jeep, an 89 yj. I don't plan to do all the crawler stuff but I'm hoping to be able to get out with it. She needs a fair bit of work yet. It's there a good place to call or go into that you would suggest?

I have 93 YJ. Springs over TN front, under in back. (Daily driver, a bit more stable). Pro Rock 60s, A R B's front and rear. 4.7 in line 6 ( Hesco). NV 4500 tranny , Atlas 4 speed transfer 9500 lb Warn winch. Sets on 37 12.50 Truxus Mats. Front 60 has dyna Trac stub hubs. Lots more done, still lots left to do. I get 1150 on RTI ramp with leaves. Aftermarket support is great, love my yj on narrow trails where jks and jls are too wide. HIP TO BE SQUARE (headlights). Goes where I want it to.
What rear springs are you running to match the spring over front?
@@ninja63639 3 1/2 inch BDS with custom curved shackles, long trave rubiicon shocks, rear axle moved back 4 1/2 inches, 3/8 inch overload spring. Would like to spring over using Alcan springs, but I can't get lottery to pull my numbers
@@wesbarcus3761 I hear that. I contacted them for stock height packs with reverse eyes to do a low spring over and they wanted like 650 each or something like that
@@ninja63639 drive it like it is for now, or use R. E. Spring over springs. May take a couple of years to save enough to get top of the line, but you know what JEEP stands for, right? Just Empty Every Pocket.

Nice to see a YJ gets some love. People have to keep in mind that if the YJ didn't sell well, Jeep might not have been around much longer. They took a big hit in '84 sales dropped off a cliff. Mine's a '92 with a 2.5L and 5.38s. My other Jeep is also pretty unpopular even though some think they're going to be the next big thing, an M38A1/early CJ5. Keeping that one mostly stock except for going 12v. Might rebuild the trans with lower gears and do a 3:1 in the transfer case, but I want to keep running 7.00R16s.
Great looking YJ! Curious of the Genright suspension on it? Was it a custom setup or one of their kits?

I like YJ and YJis my favourite JEEP
My 89 has the base model carbed I6 and a manual five speed. It has never once left me stranded. Heats up really nice and gets up to good speed. My buddy had an LT1 swapped extended by 16 inch YJ on 45’s. Having considerable seat time in my stock beside tires and his, they are great.
the transmissions in 87-89’s are BA/10 transmission and are known to fail, id know lol. good job keeping that thing going, mine went out

Actually Peugeot transmission is good; I drove mine too hard but easy to fix a broken bearing, did not have to deal with extremely complicated shifter; you guys listen to too much online BS. A very easy transmission to work on. Upgrading leaf springs is so much easier to modify without all complications. Your viewers need to know the truth! :)
A Peugeot transmission might be easier to work on, I’m not sure because I’ve never had to rebuild any of the vehicles I have owned with AX15s.

@@lifeofme3196 it's not really a bad swap you just have to cut the motor mounts and relocate them and then you buy a kit from advance adapters for the rest

You're wrong on so many levels. One it came with high pinion d30. Two it came with np231 tcase and the 258 is far from lame. It's a tank of a motor and with the right carb it can be very well suited for trail use. They also came with excellent tf999 transmission that has granny low.
You are right about the high pinion 30, good catch. They had a two piece long side axle shaft with a vacuum disconnect though so they are still junk.
@@HarrySituations with chromoly shafts I've been running 37s for years now rock crawling no problem. Lots of factors play in here. With an underpowered light weight jeep you don't need tons to have fun. Although that was the plan since 6 years ago I'm still waiting on d30 to blow up and she refuses.

Besides a flat fender the yj was the first jeep I ever liked........ styling wise... I just can't stand the way the cj looked especially in the AMC years.... my dad has a yj fixed up that I did for him with a v8 and all the goodies... it drives and wheels pretty good! Oh and whispering "falkens are better!" Lol

All those stupid comments about the YJ. The YJ wasn‘t created as a rock crawler out of the box. AMC had to survive back the days and it was designwise all about getting rid of the CJ’s roll over issues.
It wasn’t for not a good rockcrawler it wasn’t even a reliable vehicle.
Hey I got a 94 with a 2.5L. I want to swap it for a 4.0L and ditch the leafs. I'd love to see some in depth set ups with coil springs or coil overs. Hope y'all see this!
I personally don’t think it is worth the money to swap in a 4.0L. I would just buy a Jeep that already has a 4.0L.

I think this is a fine line. I have ran lighter tires only to have them puncture on the trail. My preference is to run a strong tire (which is inherently heavier) with a forged wheel to save weight.
I feel like when the editor was finishing the edit, he did so with headphones. Some audio balance issues. Before you are done, check with headphones speakers and cell phone.

No such thing as a ‘96 YJ. They only made YJ 1987-1995. It’s also a Jeep. Not a car.

Front digging is when you disengage the rear axle to turn sharply on the trail.

I don’t like all the vacuum lines and the carbs that alway seem to need work. That isn’t necessarily the engine’s fault but I’d rather have a 4.0L.

The 258 is an absolute warhorse of an engine. I've seen those go 400k miles in commercial and farm trucks hauling huge loads.

"Stronger and better then a CJ"- LOL sure...CJs many came with better drivetrains then the YJ. The longer length and wider width is the ONLY plus the YJ platform can offer.
Sorry I should have been more specific. The galvanized tub and stronger frame of the YJ make it a better starting point than the CJ in my opinion.

How do you put a 4:1 kit in a 231 in 2021? $3500 atlas is only way to have 4:1, you know that. I saved $100 a week for 35 weeks after my terelow kit grenaded to have 4:1 again.
More zuk content would be cool. But trails are always a win
