ESKA a brief history
everythingabou...
I bought one from a drunk in 1973 and ran it through mud and weeds for years. Still in my shed 42 years later. It stayed with me, I'll stay with it. Bury it with me.
Great idea with the hand truck. I’ll have to try and find an old one somewhere.
Thanks, they were going to throw it away at work and I looked at it and said hey I think I can modify that to fit my outboard.
I used to have one it started with a pile of parts from a salvage job but ended up with parts from three motors.
It ran great. There are videos of it running on my FB page
That could be a fun multi-episode restoration series . I love restorations.
I just bought this one and it really helped me out thank you
Great 👍!! Thanks for watching!! It’s why I started my channel, to help folks!!
I was a big, engine savvy 11 yo. Northern Sask. We were up closing off the cabin for the year. Cold, deep lake. I was allowed to take the Lund around the point to do a little last minute fishing, out of sight from the cabin. Wicked wind came up. Virtually brand new Eska 5hp motor wouldn't start. Tried everything, choke and carb adjustments Got blown across the lake 1/4 mile into a swamp with forest of cattails blocking me from view. They started to worry after said I'd be home for supper .Then SUDDEN temp drop to just below freezing as night started to fall. Had only t shirt and khahki shorts on. Blown to center of 1,5 mile swamp. Almost froze to death waving orange plastic oar standing in that wind till they saw the oar tip and came and pulled me out. We all swore that day that it would be Evinrude after that. Got rid of that Tecumseh CRAP!!
They can be finicky for sure. I’ve got a few Evinrudes in the pile as well. I have a mid 70’s 35 Evinrude that I was ready to send to the bottom of the lake. So they can all have their moments. LOL
I have a 5hp Clinton that looks very similar. Thanks for the helpful video.
Thanks for watching
Thanks for this informative video...today, I just picked up a nice looking Eska 5.5 made in 1975. She's a beaut! Ordered a carb kit for it from Amazon and this video will help me sort things out. Thanks again!
Glad I could help!
Thank you so much for making this video. It really helped me out with my old Sears Eska 5hp outboard I got with my 73’ Zodiac. She runs amazing now. 🙏🏻
…also your stand is perfect. I will make the exact same one. Thanks again man
@@paulvandutch been having a rough day until now, this makes my day better!!! Thanks for commenting and subscribing!!! I’m always glad when a video helps someone!!
Ok so that was just cool! Now we need to see it mounted to the back of a canoe or raft and go across the lake. Loved the history.
The restaurant "The Bitter End" in Wells Maine on rt.1 has about 10 Eska's (among other old motors) hanging on a fence by their outdoor dining area.
Nice,,for a motor that is nearly 50 yrs old,,,THanks for the History,, Best Regards
thank you so much….. it is very clear for a rookie like me…. 👍👍👍
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for commenting and watching
That duck bill pump WAS the problem with those motors....that and the ones with the clutch . The spring in them were FAMOUS....for breaking....then you had direct drive, if you were the lucky sort.
Nice job!
Gracias por el video, encontre uno igual, pero esta oxidado por el tiempo que no le dieron uso, espero recuperarlo
These are pretty good little motors. If the internals haven’t gotten rusty you should be able to save it.
Thanks for the video
Thanks for watching and commenting, glad you enjoyed it!!
What spark plug and gap did you use for this motor? Also what type of socket wrench did you use? Really appreciate the video!!
To be honest, I don’t know the official spark plug gap. What I do know is points and condenser ignitions and small engines in general take a smaller gap. Just right off the top of my head I’d say .020 would be a good gap. This isn’t something that’s highly critical, when I’ve been out with minimal tools and had to work on them, I will just pull my pocket knife out and slide the blade in and “eye ball” the gap. I also can’t remember if these are 3/4” plugs or the 13/16”. What is probably a good idea is just hit one of the big chain parts stores, I’ve seen them sell the spark plug sockets in the 3 most common sizes. 5/8 3/4 and 13/16. They’re cheap and always a good addition to you tool box. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Can you please tell me what is the gas to oil ratio and what kind of oil do you use?
I run mine on 24:1 to 32:1 officially I’m not sure of what it’s supposed to be.
@@RealWorldGarage thank you
Got my 3.5 Ted Williams at a garage sale for $40. Gets my 10ft aluminum up on plane no problem
That's a Tecumseh T624, or from the 80ies onward Tecumseh AV520-624. I have one here in Finland, sold under tradem. TERHI 3, known for being one of the most unreliable liliput out b. engines. They are still sold here for 100eur or less, I bought mine, a non- running piece, for a 500g coffee pack :)
A Saturday night fun. An hour ago I started it with a battery drill from its cam shaft nut! I have a dual ign.system, points and a no-points chip (Aliexpress for John Deere mini tractors). They are both connected, a flip flop switch inbetween, so I can choose whichever. Yesterday evening I spent couple of hours adjusting the points and timing. To my understanding I did precise work, 2mm before T.D.C, but today when playing with it only this chip-pointless kept it alive and running well. It's so old (1967- 1969) that the cam /lobe profile might be pretty flat and wavy. I think there are many sparks in one rev. and the magneto cannot produce enough amperage to the primary to get a decent spark along correct timing. I have 3 new lobes but was not that eager to get the old one replaced. But the chip works well, and I've been wondering how it switches the primary on & off, somehow related to the rising voltage in the primary winding, but where there it knows when to go to the off-mode... Anyhows, I can basically throw away the lobes, condensers, and points, and use that chip instead. Not a big investment, something like 20EUR with VAT, Customs, and postage to Finland.
Well, not from the cam shaft but the crank shaft. This is a no-valve 2-stroke little thing as we all know. Sorry for a wrong terminology... :)
What plug are you running? I've tried champion cj8, j8c, rcj8 and rcj13y it came with.
To be honest I have never looked to see what’s in it. Only that it was getting good spark.
Is the ignition modified? Just notice that you don’t have the secondary ignition module outside on the side of the cylinder but instead the spark plug lead seams to come from underneath the flywheel directly?!
Not that I know of. This is how I received it. It had spark so I haven’t looked at any of the ignition components.
If you have the time could you remove the flywheel and take pics?
@@AlexandreNoël-k7u sorry but I have to many other things going on currently to do this.
No trouble pal thank’s
@@AlexandreNoël-k7u i appreciate your understanding.
MY 65 goldenjet runs like a new one but last summer when i started it the propeller wouldnt work..Is there a shear pin i may have broke...Thanks..Great video
I can’t remember right off the top of my head. If it was an Evinrude I know for sure they do. I’m pretty sure these do too. But I’m having trouble visualizing it. I’ll try to remember to take a look at it tomorrow.
@@RealWorldGarage Thank you sir, I appreciate it.
Ok I didn’t have long to look at it. But mine has a castle nut holding the prop on, with a cotter pin to keep it from backing off. I seem to remember when you take the prop off there is a pin back there to drive the prop. Good luck hope this helps.
@@RealWorldGarage Well thank you so much..I'm gonna get on that and check it out...I will let you know what i find..Thanks again..Dave
What is correct an adjustable jet or fixed jet carb
I think they made them both ways. Of course adjustable is best, so you can dial it in, you can make corrections to the fixed. But it takes a lot more screwing around. It requires you to drill the holes of the fixed jet if it needs more fuel. I’m not sure if you can convert a fixed jet to an adjustable??
I have the same exact motor and I want to get it running but mine still has the bottom engine shroud on it and I can’t find how to take it off to even start. It needs a carb cleaning and some fuel system work. Any tips on how to get the shroud off?
This is how mine came. I got it from my dad. Generally the ones I’ve seen just bolt on. If you’re on FB, I have a page over there with the same name as my channel. You can message and send any pics there, and I can take a look.
Thanks for the reply. I will definitely do that if I can’t figure it out next time I get it out. I was looking at your video to see if I could find where the screws may have been.
I believe mine is a 1968 3.5 HP. I was told by the prior owner to mix 16:1 but I have been seeing people mix 24:1
I run most all of my motors on 24-1 with no issues. Tcw3
I'm working on on very similar to this right now. Can anyone tell me the correct spark plug gap for these old tecumseh engines?
I’m not looking at a spec sheet just going off the top of my head. But .020 should be close.
Where did you get the other carb? I broke the nipple off of mine and need a replacement. Thank you in advance
The parts for this were given to my by my dad with the motor. I’m pretty sure it was eBay. On the nipple. Is it broken off or just came out of the carb. Because if it’s the one I’m thinking of it is just pressed in. Mine came off and I was able to just gently tap it back in. It’s an interference fit.
@@RealWorldGarage it's broke broke when I was trying to get the gas line off it just snapped right off.
If you can find some one selling just pieces, maybe you can find that plate with a nipple in it. Next time I talk to my dad, I’ll ask if eBay was the only place he bought parts
Most aggrivating carburetor I've ever worked on! floods too easy won't idle!
Have you checked the float level and that the needle is shutting off fuel?? Thanks for watching and commenting
Is that 2 stroke or 4 ???
2 stroke.
Just found one of these motors laying in the middle of the road. Says Sears 3.5 hp
Wow!! What kind of shape it is in?? Eska made motors for them and a few others I think?? I have a FB page and instagram page if you’d like to share a pic with me.
what valve did you have the fuel line connected to on the carb
I built this carb out of 2 used carbs. There are 2 different fuel inlet designs. One set up is for using an external tank as well as a gravity feed. They also had a single inlet, for the gravity feed. I installed the plate with the single inlet for gravity feed, since I was only using the onboard tank. Thanks for watching and commenting!! Hope this answers your question.
I plugged off the external inlet plug on my duel plate and made it a single gravity feed only since my external tank was stolen. I just carry a premix gas can when I take longer trips
Can you put the link for the parts?
I will see what I can do, my dad purchased them years ago on eBay I think. I will have to look and see if there is any available information on the packaging.
You need a new impeller for the water pump. The lower unit should be spitting water from the holes on the back. The motor doesn't need it, but the exhaust leg needs cooling.
BTW: I own one gray 5 h.p. Eska/Sears motor and one Eska/Sears 5.5 in green/white "Ted Williams" trim. Had to do the carbs on both of them from sitting with old gas.
Is in it air cooled engine?
@@klebanjanusz280 Yes, the power heads are air cooled.
The 3hp eska and smaller doesn't use a pump they use a coolant tube.
So is there an impeller I need to changed on my 1974 essay motor? I'm confused.
love the video, i have one just like it, if you could will you pull the plug and send me the number on it thanks
What number are you looking for??
1945-B is 1974
Good information, thanks. Do you have a website that breaks the models down??? If you do I can pin it at the top of this video, for others to find. ✌️
