  • Today we're excited to debut the brand new single by ROXY COSS and her QUINTET!
    “Don’t Cross the Coss” has become Roxy Coss Quintet’s theme song, and a favorite of fans around the globe. The band plays it in performances as a way to introduce each musician, and the title is a double-entendre referencing the often mistaken spelling of Coss’ last name, and her position being a woman on the bandstand in a genre traditionally dominated by men.
    The fifth album from Bandleader Roxy Coss, Quintet is a collection of the Roxy Coss Quintet’s favorite repertoire - all Coss’ original compositions taken from her prior albums, as well as the addition of Coss’ new arrangement on the Standard, “All or Nothing At All”. This release indicates a shift in taking the primary focus off of Coss as the leader, and showcases the band as a unit, featuring the collective sound they have developed over the past several years touring and performing together. The album was recorded live at Bunker Studios, in Brooklyn NY, with full video footage offering an intimate and honest window into the band as they are now - in their element, improvising and speaking through the music to create something beyond individual solos.
    Don't Cross the Coss
    featuring:
    Alex Wintz - Guitar
    Miki Yamanaka - Piano
    Rick Rosato - Bass
    Jimmy Macbride - Drums
    This is Roxy's debut on Outside in Music and we couldn't be more thrilled to have her join the OiM family!

    Found this thanks to Terri Lyne Carrington's new book "New Standards - 101 Lead Sheets by Women Composers." Fantastic discovery for me. So glad that book is pushing me in all kinds of great directions.

      Oh my God!!! Woman playing jazz sounds terrible and boring!!! Terrible articulation! You're not playing Chopin guys!!! Lacks personality, creativity, technique. Only woke brainless people praises this music without soul.

    It seems that in the section of trading, Roxy quotes "Surrey with a Fringe on Top."

    Thanks. Very nice. Can you comment on the chord changes, are they a contrafact, and also what scales or modes are used on this, predominantly?

    • @katella12
      @katella12 5 років тому +1

      I think I figured it out but am not sure. Is it a contrafact of Miles Davis' "Serpents Tooth?"

    • @outside-in-music
      @outside-in-music  5 років тому

      @@katella12 could be! Maybe Roxy can weigh in...

    • @RoxyCossSax
      @RoxyCossSax 5 років тому +3

      Not a contrafact! It is definitely a set of "standard" chord changes, meaning they are "functional harmony", but I didn't base them on a particular song.

    • @RoxyCossSax
      @RoxyCossSax 5 років тому +2

      @@katella12 great guess, but no... Although they are both AABA 32-bar forms, this tune is in F, and the changes circle around the tonic and dominant with different substitutions, while Serpent's Tooth is in Bb, and follows a chromatically ascending chord progression on the A sections.

    • @RoxyCossSax
      @RoxyCossSax 5 років тому +3

      Thank you! It is mainly based around the key of F Major, with different scales you can utilize depending on the specific dominant sound implied. We, as a band, often open up harmonically and follow each other in terms of which specific scales we are using. But, starting off by learning your major modes will help, especially the Ionian (Major), Dorian (Minor), and Mixolydian (Dominant) sounds!
