    Absolutely brilliant, dear Phillip! Clear, concise, no waffling around at all-just precise information in combination with saving (a lot of) time! Thank you so much!!! 👍🙏😃

    Thanks so much, Phillip - I just wanted to point out that (I suppose it's kind of obvious) but if you set the scale of a rest to 1 it doesn't disappear - it just becomes really tiny. If you want it to actually turn invisible, go to the same settings where you'd change the scale and instead change the colour settings by first switching the colour switch on, then clicking the black box. Then you set the alpha channel in the bottom right corner from its default of 255 to 0. Thanks again!

    thank you! I couldn't figure out how to make these boxes much smaller to hug a set of pitches, and then I had to do the manual engrave movement and of course it didn't carry over to the part exactly as you said. no setting I could seem to find in the line editor would push the side of the box right up against the notes.

    I would like this box to cover two staves, but manage only to expanded it vertically in Engrave mode. Switching back to Write mode, it is still just covering the one staff. Any advice? 🙏

    Thank you so much, Phillip. Very clear and awfully well explained. Now, once this box is operational in one file, would it be possible to, say, copy and paste to use it again in another file? Or does one need to repeat all the steps over and over again?

      Certainly! You can save those custom notations as a default so that they appear in each new Dorico project.

      Yes! The great thing about this method is that the boxes can be copied and pasted into other bars the same as notes, dynamics, etc.

      @@WulfinLieske Have you pasted the boxes to match each other exactly across both violin divisi staves in Galley View?
      I’ve just done a divisi part on my full score with boxes around both parts. However, on the full score, it “appears” as though only the top part of the box is showing.
      What I have to do is go to Engrave mode, click the box, type F on the keyboard, and it clears things right up.
      Is you experience similar?
      If it helps, send an email to phillip@pasmusic.co and I can help you out further.

    How did you achieve writing text/dyanmics for the boxes, without making the boxes vertically huge? Seems like when I try to add instructions to the aletoric devices or dynamics, the horizontal box lines grow vertically on top of the text?

    • @PhillipArthurSimmons
      @PhillipArthurSimmons  11 місяців тому +1

      Now that's a tricky one. I'm usually able to add text/dynamics without the boxes freaking out on me. Every once in a while, it'll make the boxes jump vertically, as you've mentioned. In those cases, I use Engrave mode to nudge them back down.

    • @dillonmderosa
      @dillonmderosa 11 місяців тому

      @@PhillipArthurSimmons Ty Phillip! I think I've run into one of those rare issues, I'll tackle it still with the Engrave mode and appreciate the insights!
      P.S., food for thought for a future template to sell, a template of Aleotoric devices (glisses, random boxes, fx, etc...) pre-made to copy over and use. Perhaps, just me, but I'd love to buy something like that to save time. Cheers!

    Thanks! Any chance you know how to make independent repetition signs? Placing repetition signs in the middle of bars, without it affecting the whole system, just that one staff/instrument?

      As a matter of fact, I do! I just ran into this need while orchestrating a cue two days ago.

      @@PhillipArthurSimmons Thanks a lot! I now realize I wasn't super clear with what I was looking for (sorry, English ain't my first language). I was thinking more about something like this, at the 1 minute 45 sec mark (added the timestamp anyway ua-cam.com/video/leWnpFjbHyE/v-deo.htmlsi=jyfGRvHSRsaqhxLe&t=105 ). So individual repeat *bar* signs, kind of similar in function to that of aleatoric boxes. I'm guessing in the video in the link there's some open measure stuff going on? Not exactly sure, I'm pretty new to Dorico. Any idea on how this gets done? I've only found one forum post that is not really clear

    I believe that if one needs shorter (less tall) boxes, one needs to create multiple lines and alter the 14 length to something else, right?

    • @PhillipArthurSimmons
      @PhillipArthurSimmons  Місяць тому +1

      @@TheBardsCorner
      My favorite way to handle this is to create one set of lines and then use Engrave Mode to move the lines vertically up and down as needed.
      It’s worked really well for me and tends to look pretty clean.
      But if you need extremely short boxes, it could be worth making another set of lines.

    • @TheBardsCorner
      @TheBardsCorner Місяць тому +1

      @@PhillipArthurSimmons in my case yes, I needed the box to be just around the noteheads (stemless notes).

  • @brianjmark

    Phillip, is it possible to adjust the box smaller vertically, and also, is it possible to export every box you create from Dorico file to another, so you don't have to keep creating it again every time?

    • @PhillipArthurSimmons
      @PhillipArthurSimmons  3 місяці тому

      Certainly. You can adjust the distance from the staff for each element. Using the Library Manager, you can import custom lines from one project to another. But you can also save custom lines as defaults so that they appear in each project you open from that point forward.

      One advantage I see for creating custom lines is that they snap to the rhythmic grid, so spacing will stay consistent no matter what happens in the score/part.

    This has got to be the most complicated way to do such a simple thing that I've ever seen. Especially hiding the rests. Jesus Christ all that just to hide them? Why not just right click>hide? These developers are so out to lunch I swear. Why isn't the standard aleatoric box the first damn line on the list to begin with? Who the hell is using these other lines anyways? Like 2 people in the world? How do they have all those but no box notation? Don't get me wrong I like Dorico and it's really powerful but it is just so unintuitive and hard to use. Let's be honest how many people do you think figured out how to hide those rests without having to look it up? 0 would be my bet. Set to global custom scale 1? WTF?

    • @jonathanwingmusic
      @jonathanwingmusic 5 місяців тому +1

      Haha yeah, I agree, "The most complicated way to do such a simple thing" seems to be the company slogan over at Steinberg... there's endless workarounds and so many extra steps and complexity, it's very clear they have such an engineer mindset but forget that most musicians and composers are not engineers too. I actually love the software because it is so powerful, but some UI things drive me absolutely bonkers. Even just doing basic transposition tasks, you can't just assign that to a shortcut, it requires the complex transpose menu which is a pain to understand and all kinds of syntax just to move a note up by a 5th or something. Fortunately I've used Keyboard Maestro and Streamdeck to workaround a lot of these using macros but I really wish the team would put themselves in the mindset of customers - they are often quite stubborn on their design philosophy and explain why something is not possible yadda yadda (I have actually requested that any element be available to right click>hide and they gave some runaround why they have no intention to do that... it's like, really?! too simple and intuitive for their tastes?). I definitely still prefer it to any other notation software but they really do make some things over-complicated.
