Winning at Poker requires a leather ass, extraordinary patience and controlling your impulses and temptations. Poker is a marathon, not a sprint.

Except poker players aren't runners I'm a runner and Doug Polk couldn't run a 100 Meter well to save his life nor a marathon you dim witted son of a bitch (Quote from O Brother Where Art Thou)

Yea, I do think it was a lot easier in the past to turn pro, games were more loose, but I gotta say these days you see lots of gamblers as well, but it's still different. More gamblers/fish enhances the variance as well and tempts you to start gambling too, for me that was too much and i realised poker wasn't for me after long time :( despite being really smart at this game but I just lack some of the things he mentioned here that are so important and essential to be a winning player, being patience and discipline, those 2 factors really sum up about the only real important qualities to be a good player. I once heard from a guy, a pro to just study and study the game but I don't believe in that, it might improve you a bit but in the end it will come down if you have the necessary qualities and you can put that into all your games as well...

Doug, I watch your videos every single day and have really enjoyed watching not only your channel grow, but you grow as a youtuber as well. You've seriously improved quickly and the quality of your videos makes for some of the most entertaining vids I've seen on youtube lately. Just a great blend of smart information and humor, and solid editing work. So keep it up!
Anyways, I felt the need to comment and let you know that this video could not have come at a better time for me. I currently live in LA and play/practice/study poker for a minimum of 12 hours a day, every day of the week. And it doesn't feel like "studying" for me, I genuinely love it and just cannot get enough. It's such a deep game that there is constantly new info to learn. I play at Commerce almost every day and have become a regular there. I seriously relate to what you were saying about how you came up in the poker world though. I feel like I am currently going through it the exact way of what you described. That it's not going to be some quick leap to success, but rather the result of a ton of hard work and discipline. I'm definitely in it for the long haul, but I guess my question for you is before you had "made it", when you were still putting in the hours and hours behind the scenes, did you ever feel like giving up? Even though you put countless hours, energy, money, just everything you had into it, what did you tell yourself when you felt like it might all be for nothing? How did you find it within yourself to keep pushing on during those tougher than usual days? And lastly when would you say you knew you had finally "made it"? I'm sorry for the super long essay but I guess I am sort of going through one of those periods of time where I am questioning if what happens if I gave it 110% of me but never "make it"? Some days it just clicks for me, and I feel like I'm completely at home at the table, but then other days for whatever reason I feel like I'm lost or something idk. I doubt you'll read all of this but thanks for all of this amazing content bro you have no idea how much I have learned from watching your videos. I'll be playing sometimes and I will literally be thinking to myself "how would Doug be analyzing this hand on his channel" haha, but it helps. Thanks again Doug

    • @DougPolkPoker

Yeah, I've been there. Almost 10 years ago I posted a thread on 2+2 called "reaching the end of my rope" - It really felt like I was spinning my wheels. Determination and discipline was a big part of getting past that, and it didn't happen overnight. Thanks for supporting the channel and for all the kind words.

Wow, what a great video. Love your channel, Doug. I found it couple days ago and have been glued to youtube watching ever since. I really appreciate you doing these poker educational videos and giving us the chance to learn from a 2 time bracelet winner and great poker player like you. I used to play poker for a living grinding the 25NL games back in the good old easy days about 5-6 years ago, but quit when the games got tougher.
I was doing some of the mistakes you mentioned but your videos are giving me a new perspective and re-ignited my passion for poker. Now I just want to play to improve and become better and not be affected by variance - whether negative or positive. I just love how unaffected you are when bad beats happen in your stream :)
And I also love your funny, excited reactions when you win a big pot agains someone haha. And I can tell you're not overly emotional, you're just doing it for the entertainment. Now I wanna be unaffected when i play - just like you :)
Every once in a while I do a $10 to $100 challenge crushing the $2NL zoom games :D and I cash out and give up but this time I will try to work on my game and see if I can move up the stakes and win at higher levels and perhaps go to $1000 and beyond.

    Hi Doug,
Im following you for a few years, and recently, since I moved to Vietnam I'm almost always make it to the finale table at the local poker club. The daily tournaments have about 150 / 200 players, took me a few weeks to adapt to their style but now, I grind it nicely to the end, and even managed to win 3 times.
My problem is though, some times I make some stupid herocalls with Ace highs, or pushes with pocket 8's at final table against the chip leader opening 3bet and find myself behind. My question is, why do I do this to myself and how can I overcome those poor decision making moments?
Massive respect for your work and all the best from Vietnam,
    Tony
