Sometimes employees but not usually. The card is tampered with and put back because they are waiting for it to be bought which activates it. They check their stolen card info daily and use it as soon as it is activated and before the recipient receives it. The store I work keeps the cards at the till where we can keep an eye on them. We also question large card purchases and a coworker actually saved a woman from getting caught up in one of those phone scams when she came in to purchase multiple large denomination cards and seemed very stressed out.

Years ago Target refused to refund/replace a $5 classical music cd I bought as an impulse item at the checkout stand. It was a sealed case but was missing the actual cd when I opened it at home. I immediately went back to the store but was told that Policy dictated that I had to take it up with corporate. After two or three rounds of emails and phone calls to extremely rude customer service, I was directed to mail the empty case and receipt to corporate for a later mailed refund of the $5, not including the postage I would have incurred. I declined. Instead I have boycotted their store for the last 20 years and actively encouraged all family and friends to do the same. They've lost sales and community good will because a $5 mistake was not appropriately handled.
I bought a flight ticket at the Orlando Florida Frontier counter. They put the wrong gate on it, and I sat at he wrong gate wondering why I was the only passenger. Needless to say, I missed my flight. They refused to refund or make it right, saying it was my fault I went to the wrong gate. So I called corporate, and they said the same thing. I fly all the time, but will not use Frontier or go through Orlando again. I hope someone from Frontier reads this and makes a stink. I'm aching to sue them on their dime. I still have my ticket and proof of incorrect sale.

When one considers the excitement those young men felt as they purchased that gift card for their father , it brings a smile to your face. They pooled their money to give Dad a huge Father’s Day gift. The stores that sell these should be able to check the card at the point of sale . Once it’s been purchased the store should ready to use. The boys now know that cash works better. No one needs the extra expense applied to the purchase of a Visa gift card anyway.
The result should be the entire family never shopping at Target again. Spread the word boycott the store. Personalky i get a creepy feeling whenever i tried to sho at target. I wont enter their stores. I dont know if its the background music or the lighting i just get nervous. Never went back. Something isnt right at Target
They lock up soap, deodorant and laundry detergent but not the gift cards. They don't lose anything when gift cards are tampered with, so the consumer gets screwed. Buy gift cards online, directly from the issuing company!

I don't remember which comedian it was who points out how STUPID gist cards are. You're taking money that can be spent ANYWHERE and turning it into money which can be spent at only one place. That's dumb. Just give 'em the cash.
Just last Christmas I started transferring money directly into accounts with a holiday card that says what I've done. Realised the gift card is just an obstacles to get to the money. People really hurt after Christmas so that money boost that they can use on bills or whatever is more help than the gift card. So I'm completely off gift cards now and I think everyone else should be, too. Transferring might not look great but that's what the birthday/holiday card is for.

Lock the cards up, like the clothes detergent and toothpaste
Good job reporting and glad they got the money back.
With all the news from all over the USA about the gift card scams why are people still buying them 😮
We had an issue with an Apple gift card purchased at CVS that would not activate properly.. Apple said it was CVS's fault, CVS said it was Apples. We're out $50, which was not significant enough to interest the local consumer reporter at our newspaper.
OMG two things that got me.. first.. I love this DAD, second .. how he hit that last line he got me cracking up 🤣 at the end of the clip when he said " You know.. if you buy a box of baby diapers and you know.. You find a box of pretzels when you get home, they're going to do something about it"
Father of the year ☺️♥️ glad he got the money back .. what a sweet man and sweet kids
Stores need to take responsibility, not the consumer.
Scamming all types of plastic cards has been going on for a while now. So why are businesses still letting them in the open, for anyone to mess with? Lock them up, like you do cigarettes, lottery tickets, etc.
Because they still get paid. It’s the customers getting screwed. They only lock up the stuff that causes them to lose money.
No company wants bad exposure on the news. Glad it worked out for him
Guess we better go back to handing out cash.
What Awesome Son's he has. Yes this is going on all over I hope it gets straightened out.💙✌️ And Target keeps their word.
Stop giving gift cards....folks like cash more than a gift card.
"that burns my rear end like a three foot flame".... Now that's a new one!
That’s nice that he’s getting the refund, but shame on these companies giving the customers a run around. Not everyone is going to have the News on their side.
That happened to the lady in Houston Texas out of Walmart so it's happening everywhere and it's the damn employees that work there you can guarantee it's not a regular citizen is a freaking employee and once they activate that card they know they can use it that's the only damn way the employee has to activate it with the cash register in the damn store knows it I would sue the living hell out of them also the BBB knows it they know that's the only way that car can be used and has to be activated by a cash register first they're all to blame
It’s organized scammers. They replace whole stacks of gift cards with ones they’ve already got the numbers for, including the ones with “secure” packaging. Most of the stolen money is going to China.
Disgraceful that it took a news team to get him a refund. Do better @target
This happened to my grandsons. As soon as they activated it, they were hacked and drained
Next time just give $200 in cash.
My husband got a sealed card that was a Vanilla card for a refund. It was never useable!!! Small amount but we won't ever get one again...automatically refuse any VANILLA cards!! They are well known for fraudulent credit, charges to use etc..not only tampering is an issue!
Costco has their gift cards locked up. Smart move!
why not give cash that can be used anywhere?
@@TM-dd9tka gift is a gift. If that’s what they wanna use it for then why would that matter. If you know they’re prone to buying those things gets them a shirt, blanket, hot cheeto basket. There’s really no excuse
My daughter told me cash was a lazy gift . LoL 😂
@lorireed8046 tell her perfect cause she's a lazy.....um girl
We need to get father's day as a nationally respected holiday
Cash is a better gift idea. Ever since I was a child, I thought that gift cards are a terrible idea as a gift. It only took me to get a gift card to a clothing store for me to realize that. Even at 33 years, I still think they are a terrible idea for a gift. Granted, now I love clothing stores. 😂
Next time, kids, take your Dad shopping. Being with him is more important than the $$$❤
Target is one of the only places I REFUSE to shop at. Evil and soulless.
Wouldn't it be easier just to give cash? Not only that but when you buy those cards there's an activation fee too.
Sorry that happened to you hopefully you still have a happy father's day
I bought a flight ticket at the Orlando Florida Frontier counter.
I've NEVER bought a giftcard or responded to any person asking for payment using giftcards SCAMs...most likely.... They should be banned. 😢
I don't shop at Target or Walmart & I do not buy store gift cards. Target can afford to refund this man's money. They just don't want to. Pure greed. It's their responsibility to make sure customers receive what they paid for.
This is why I hate gift cards. I give cash and always will.
This is a common scam. This is not 'the old days' where you blindly go through life and still do ok. Situational awareness of everything and a heightened 'Spidy sense' is needed daily.
Eff that!! Give him the CASH!!!
They lock up soap, deodorant and laundry detergent but not the gift cards. They don't lose anything when gift cards are tampered with, so the consumer gets screwed. Buy gift cards online, directly from the issuing company!
Wow! Sorry that happened to them but it's good to know. I'll be paying way more attention from now on.
Good for that family . Today I was going to buy a $50 Visa Happy Birthday gift card and then I saw a $4.95 McFee attached to that . I cancelled the card and told clerk I’ll give cash . How ridiculous . I will watch from now on . 😡😖👎
Give cash, never buy gift cards.
I don't remember which comedian it was who points out how STUPID gist cards are. You're taking money that can be spent ANYWHERE and turning it into money which can be spent at only one place. That's dumb. Just give 'em the cash.
Gift cards are a gimmick and everybody should know this already.
Give cash.
Gift cards are a nice idea but sadly too many scammers and thieves are out there tampering with them. It's too bad that idiots ruin it for the rest of us.
That's the part that burns my rear end like a 3 foot flame 😂😂
Corporate: Consumers should be more careful with products sold at our stores
Target: Consumers should be more careful with products sold at our stores
BBB: We don't actually do anything or have any power at all so consumers should be more careful
The news team didn't mention that the gift card the sons bought was also frought with incredible service charges, a rediculous expiry date and every time dad would have used the card he would lose more and more money. Don't buy those specific gift cards. It's a scam
A card with cash in it is so much better. The fact that it can cost between $5-$7 dollars to purchase those cards is ridiculous. Bring back the good ole' days of bills falling out of a greeting card! Bring back CASH!
"That's the part that burns my rear-end like a 3-foot flame." LOL, dude's a meme-in-the-making.
😂
I had a huge problem with one of those gift cards. No one could get them to work. Finally, the cashiers at Dollar General knew better how to use them, but still had problems.
I had something similar happen at walmart, years ago. There is really nothing you can do. The store isnt responsible and you just lose your money. There is ZERO protection.
I’ll give cash to family members. I don’t like plastic.
This was a HUGE STORY IN TEXAS at Christmas. A Church bought 4 gift cards for those in need, only to find out 3-4 had been hacked
I don't care if its the corporate or local store's fault, I'd rather not take the risk shopping at Target coz I don't have hundreds to spare on scams.
Time for people to wake up and go back to using cash!
