The songs on this album flowed perfectly from one to the next. The other big single from The Lexicon of Love was Poison Arrow.

One of my favourite bands. This is from The Lexicon of Love album which is considered one of the finest of the 80s.
Stand out singles I’d say are All of My Heart, Poison Arrow, Be Near Me , SOS, Tears are not Enough. I love all their songs though so I’m biased lol

Their hair and style was very much old hollywood glam and sophistication. They wore gold lame' suits live on stage. Ooh ooh, you should do an entire album reaction to this album, the lexicon of love. It is one of THE most interesting, catchy, funky, soulful, pop masterpieces from beginning to end. Even their couple of slower paced songs are just sonically mesmerizing. They are really clever in their songwriting. No two songs sound the same yet they all sound like "ABC".

80s - an explosion of sounds, it’s true. I think it’s reflective of a rapid fire rolling advancement in technology, offering whole new way to express sound…possibly….certainly it would have had to have contributed.

The reason the hair cut looks modern is that so many modern haircuts are the old classics.
I mean his haircut was pretty "classic" throw back then.
I had to laugh because I said the same sort of thing in the 80s about his and other guys with this style only to have my dad whip out pics of him in the early 60s with the same haircut. Followed by pics of his dad in the late 30s/early 40s with it. 😂
What's old is new again. Cool cats.
But always good to see you enjoy relating to the music of my youth. ❤️

This is one of the cd's I listen to while working out, the songs really give me a great work out. The 80's were such a great era for music, so much fun and positivity and people all getting along, MTV, etc..

The album 'The Lexicon of love' and The lyrics of the song, and others on it were inspired by a break-up lead singer Martin Fry had experienced. In the second verse, during the phrase "When your girl has left you out on the pavement", the "Goodbye" background vocal is spoken by the actual woman in the relationship who had jilted him.
The single consists of four parts
    1) standard album version 2) is an instrumental version,3) is a vocal version without the orchestral overdubs and 4) is a short acoustic instrumental part of the song. the total version (all 4) is 12:29
The record's producer Trevor Horn (famed for the Buggles 'video killed the radio star' appears in the video. The video is a light mockery of British life with tongue firmly in cheek.

This is one of the few times I purchased an album based solely on the cool cover art. I had not any heard ABC music yet. The Lexicon of Love ended up being my favorite album of the early 80s. Saw them in concert too! The whole album is an 80s vibe but Poison Arrow is the other single. First time seeing the video in its entirety- the video’s pretty cheesy-doesn’t match up with the cool film noir album cover

Hi Anton, UA-cam jiust randomly recommended your channel to me, so here we are listening to ABC! Terrible video, great song. As others have probably said, this was a whole sort of concept album, hit song after hit song flowing into each other. I saw them at the Royal Albert Hall in 2019 - I was some way from the stage but Martin Fry looks pretty much the same, sounds exactly the same, and I think he even has the same hair.
They did this entire but opened with probably my favourite song of theirs, 'When Smokey Sings'. Smokey Robinson, of course. Brilliant song - Martin's a bit of a genius.
If you want to hear someone else singing with a very English accent, try Sophie Ellis-Bextor. (I'm always requesting her!) She started out doing disco, but classy disco like 'Murder On The Dance Floor', but does ordinary songs as well. Try 'Here Comes The Rapture'.
And another would be Chris Rea - a gritty Northern accent mixed with some of the best guitar playing and song writing around. Try 'Curse of the Traveller' or 'Windy Town'.
But I see you have a very diverse catalogue - Elton and Ed's Christmas song, a track from the awesome new Tears For Fears album. You've done a song by Alison Krauss, but have you heard any of the work she's done with Robert Plant? I'm kind of addicted to them. Try 'Somebody Was Watching Over Me'.
Anyway, enough babbling, this looks like a great find, subscribed right now!

You're right about the lyrics. Fry had a way with clever lyrics.
You really need to read them on their own and concentrate. This album has not One Bad Song. Love most of subsequent albums though some were a bit uneven. Check out songs from How to be a Zillionaire, and Beuuty Stab. They were musical chameleons, never staying with one sound or style, a bit like David Bowie.

I haven’t mentioned this before, when you give us your brilliant commentary (😉)… but you do avoid commmenting about some the silliest videos that artists had to put out during the “MTV” video heydays… while some bands were so keyed into wonderful theatrics, others were kinda forced to put out nonsense to promote whatever single the record company wanted. You concentrate on the musicality, the song itself, and I appreciate that. This video is shit-ton, MTV laughable … but the song is actually pretty amazing….
