Remember when they reserved the whole area near Ghorrock/Trollweiss just for when this quest was eventually going to take place. When they planned out that one real story line.
Yeah that's really cool. 'The North' as in the plain near Ghorrock is mentioned as early as in Hazeel Cult (maybe even earlier). The face that RotM came out 10+ years after is amazing
Lucien is by far my favorite villian in Runecscape. He was a genuinley scary foe that seemed like serious threat and his lust for power an dominion felt real.
Agreed. They worked with the scale of the threat correctly, and after all of the years leading up to both While Guthix Sleeps and Ritual of the Mahjarrat it felt like a conclusion that would act as the crux of failure or victory.
OSRS players are going to be absolutely delighted when this eventually comes to their version of RuneScape. So many references to "The North" have been mentioned, and this was imo the greatest quest RS ever made. It was the perfect way to continue from WGS, and is a complete masterpiece.
Lucien may not have been a very complex character, but he was a BEAST. He was powerful, he was evil, and he was overwhelmingly terrifying. This is an awesome theme for an awesome villain. Rest in peace, Lucien.
The thing that made Lucien so dangerous is that he was ready to ascend to godhood WHILE the other gods were locked out by Guthix. This guy wouldn't have a single competitor had the dragonkin not swooped in.
Not only that, but I think at the time players underestimated how powerful the dragonkin were when they came in and took him out. Like, this is an entire race that received power at the same time as a False User did. Imagine how many gods individually ascended through the use of the stone, and the dragonkin received power from each and every one.
I recently finished this quest for the first time. While doing the cape there is a moment where the player and npcs contemplate why he hasn't ascended to godhood yet. This made me think he knew he shouldn't I thought he was aware of the edict of guthix he knew that if he would ascend he'd be flung out of the world. He straight up calls himself a god, he shows that he has at least some related power to a god. But he isn't ever made into a god. I wonder if that was intentional-- Like if the act of actually ascending would throw him somewhere random. I still wonder what would have happened if he actually did ascend, would he be subject to the edict?
@@Talakai_ So, the edicts keep Gods out, but we learn that Guthix had to separately go to each God one by one to boot them from Gielinor. I forget where but that is a thing we learn about, and how it went down with various different Gods -- Seren, V, Bandos, etc. I imagine that, had Lucien ascended, he'd have been fine... until Guthix felt it and was like "Pshh, fuck around find out lil bitch!" and flicked him off Gielinor lol
@@JerkWarlord Thank you for that explanation, I wish you could source it but I understand and can see how it works. Seren herself split up so she wouldn't be cast out so I'm sure there is some truth or loophole, ultimately however it would have depended on how the writers felt like going. I'm just confused on -why- he didn't ascend to godhood. I know it's good an all to say he didn't have all the prerequisites but I had just recently played the quest and as an avid writer myself I felt like there was intentional context clues to imply he chose not to ascend just yet. But I mean, we all have our own headcannons. It's just to Jagex to decide what's true, what isn't and what gets retconned later. HA!
@@Talakai_ If it helps I'm fairly confident it was in a quest and it took place at the Memorial to Guthix above the Hall of Memories. My gut says Azzanadra's Quest. As far as why Lucien didn't fully ascend, I agree I think it could be better explained but if I had to guess he was probably waiting to get the powerup from the ritual beforehand. Chances are more likely than not that he'd have known that once he "ascended" Guthix'd wake up all with a bee in his bonnet about him, so in Lucien's mind it would've been in his favor to ascend strategically. Note that once Zamorak ascended he never had to attend another ritual again, he was freed from them. It's possible he was freed from them but also wouldn't benefit from them, either; Admittedly that's unknown. But let's say that's the case, well, then it's in Lucien's best interests to ascend *after* the ritual. Ascend before and he misses out on the power from the ritual, winding up a weaker God than he would've if he ascended afterwards. And as little respect as I'm sure a little bitch like Lucien would've had for a guy like Guthix I'm pretty sure he also was smart enough to know that he shouldn't underestimate a dude who single-handedly yeeted all the other Gods off the fucking planet lol. Ergo, in Lucien's best interests to ascend after the ritual, not before. Shame buddy just didn't account for the Kin, hah! So anyways. It's either that or the much more boring explanation that he just couldn't have ascended any quicker than he ultimately would've had the Kin not kerplunked the guy permanently. Ascension is also about just spending a lot of time around Elder Artefacts, maybe all that was missing for the guy was just more time that he didn't get.
Sliske seems more clever, but Lucien was more badass. He roflstomped anyone who got in his way, and the only time we see an opponent last against him was in RoT, but he was still winning. The Dragonkin only defeated him because he was wounded and they outnumbered him.
