Vanitas wants to die, so he is not scared of just being asshole with everyone, in this case he is just manipulating everyone there to see their reactions and get information about the queen according to the reaction of the kid... in the moment jeanne and the kid react how they react, he just know that he is right in everything he says and for that he is laughing because he knows he already win in that meeting (was a meeting to share information, but he manage to get all info he wants without revel any info of him), Vanitas attitude is really complex, he really hate himself but dont show that depression and his wishes to die in public... he is a broken person, and thats why he acts like a Villain do normally... In the manga and in novels he start to enjoy living more and being less self hatred because he genuinely start to falling in love for Jeanne (at first he just do it to troll Jeanne but he eventually start falling for Jeanne and now he is just totally in love with her), also he start to understand from other people that Jeanne fall for him too so is reciprocated love, and he seems to have more desire to live and explore the first time he sense love in the entire life but he just dont know how to act in front of jeanne anymore, also his mind has a dilemma because he promise to kill Jeanne but now he dont want do that... is very complex this characther... but yeah, is a Main Protagonist.
I dont know what's worse, the fact that he said this in front of Ruthven, or the fact that he WAS RIGHT.
