I wasn't a fan of the Jordans until the 4. I was in high school when the Fresh Prince came out with his TV show and yeah the Grapes were hard to get when I was 17 in 1990. I remember there was some left over stock found of the Grapes at a Footlocker and I wound up getting the Barkley 180s instead in 1991. My friend bought the Grapes when he wasn't supposed to. A year later they had some Grapes hidden in the back...and word spread people were cutting class to get them I know we did but I finally got a pair of Jordan 5's in the polarizing Top 3 colorway. Its my youth all rolled into one

Since he destroyed my Knicks I won’t EVER buy a Jordan product, but back in ‘90 I was naive enough to think Ewing was NEXT, so I owned Jordan III to V and really love this shoe. It was fairly light because it did NOT feature leather, however the sole needed a long break-in period and thanks to the clear outsole it was pretty slippery on anything from “pro” hardwood. I exclusively wore this shoe outdoors after a few slips on court. I tried to use the lacing system but it just got in the way. I’d buy a pair now but last I saw they were $500+
I have a pair of the Air Jordan top 3 that I bought this year. That's a very nice shoe. Combine the fire red, grape, and metallic colorways into one shoe. It's not bad.
In my opinion a really underrated 5 is the premium collection that had a full leather upper and high quality crafting, with the all black, wine, and platinum colorways. those shoes are such a high quality and they really give you the true experience of a Jordan 5, along with the "low-key" and simple colors, keeping the premium feel as subtle as possible. the off whites are also a really comfy pair, its more of a summer hi top rather than a standard 5. In my opinion those two are the best 5's out there (excluding colorways and collabs).

When the Jordan 5's first came out I bought a pair of fire red for me and a black pair for my brother, $115+ tax each. My brother wore his until they fell apart, but I had a growth spur and only wore them a few times. They stayed in my closet until several years back , I had to throw them away, the foam completely deteriorated...crumbled... and the sole completely separated from the upper part. The ankle support felt really good and had the thicker foam and the leather did crease. The second comment below has a good example of what they look like when they get old. All these guys that collect these shoes are going to watch therm fall apart, over time, so wear them and get you money's worth. I still have the lace locks.
