    I’ve tried it all: Shipping discount, free shipping, high promoted listings, listing 5 every day. Nothing seems to make a difference. And no method seems to defend against the eBay roller coaster. Leaving things alone and listing more when things sell, I have just as many amazing days and terrible days as when I kill myself trying to please the algorithm.

    I sell pottery, glass, vintage decor, most of which is fragile. For me, the shipping discount helps cover to cost of packing materials.

    Sorry, adding $1 or $2 to the calculated shipping policy doesn't cover packaging costs, and eBay charges fees on the buyer's shipping, and eBay charges fees on buyer's sales tax. In your example, the $24.93 (your rate) if offered to the buyer saves them a few bucks. However, If you pay a final value fee of 13 percent plus promoted listings fee of 10 percent (or whatever) you are paying 23 percent of that amount on their buyers' shipping costs AND sales tax. No matter what we do, we lose. But I agree with you Jon, doing it your way will entice more buyers because they will look at those who do not offer the discount and think they are ripping them off, especially when another seller has a lower shipping rate for the same item. Wish eBay would do better! Thanks Jon!

    I tried this and didn't seem to help much but I did settle on a 10% discount on shipping instead.

    I had a shipping fiasco a couple of months ago. I held a sale on a lot of my scrapbooking supplies that were unsold in my store. I had a flat shipping cost on all of my listings. I also had offers checked on them. So this one person sent offers on 20 items they wanted. I accepted all offers. The shipping total came up to be 95 dollars. Buyer could not put all of the items into the cart and request total since they made offers on all of the items. I contacted eBay to see if they could do a bulk refund on the paid shipping price minus the price of the label that I paid for and they said they could not. So I had to manually refund the shipping cost for the majority of the items, it was about 4 items to where I got to the cost of the label, so I was done.
    I am NEVER doing that again. I went into all of my remaining listings, turned OFF offers and changed shipping to free. Ugh! :(

      I'm getting ready to sell again. I'm going to do free shipping as I did in the past. Build a little bit into the price. Get more on some items and less on some others to balance it out. Less headache than dealing with combined shipping, method of shipping, shipping refunds, discounts etc. If a buyer buys multiple items I can figure out after the sale the least expensive way to go. I don't plan on selling super heavy items. If I ever do I'll have to research best practice for that.

    Years back I used calculated shipping UNTIL I had a prospective buyer message me asking if it really cost $52.00 to ship a simple acrylic serving salad bowl…..I was floored this was Ebay’s calculated rate. As I had weighed everything with its box & packing. That’s when I found out about pirateship and learned to hone my shipping skills watching bearded picker videos & others for boxing hacks. Commercial cubic shipping and now advantage ground commercial cubic game changer. You have to become a shipping ninja…..otherwise you leave money on the table…..that could be in your pocket AND still a lower cost for buyers!

    • @FlippinAintEasy
      @FlippinAintEasy  5 місяців тому

      eBay recently added cubic for ground advantage and property mail. It sounds like you are not set up to pass on buyer discounts in your shipping preferences which can help.

      @@FlippinAintEasy Hi, yes I heard EBay is offering the cubic now, but I am sticking with pirateship. I stopped doing calculated YEARS ago, I switched to flat rate. I am making some $ on shipping and the buyers are getting a good deal too. Enjoy your content and your new show with Scott ( bearded picker). He was a wealth of knowledge when I first started out.

    I started sharing my discount in January. I had the best month I've had in a couple of years. I really decided to do it because I was noticing that people were being charged SO MUCH more than I was paying, on some items. I had a sale in Dec. where they charged the buyer $16.90 for shipping and they charged me $7.93. MORE THAN DOUBLE! It just doesn't make sense to overcharge them that much. Funny thing is that it hasn't applied to all of my listings. Each time I do shipping I find that at least one person was charged the no discount rate.

    So wait a minute, if you get it for $17 from Fed ex negotiated rate, and eBay only offers you it for $24.93, eBay is pocketing the difference as I guarantee they get your negotiated rate OR BETTER from Fed ex. Geez, eBay!

  • @gemflipper

    Hi, I've seen on other channels people talking about changing to flat rate because eBay overestimates the cost for shipping. I was always confused by that and just assumed they were using The wrong dimensions. Then I discovered that there's an option to charge the buyer full shipping cost as if they were going to the post office. Mine has always been set to pass along the discount to the buyer. Now with cubic rates available and if you know the size of box you're going to use there could be an even slightly better deal on shipping I've discovered. I use a flat weight system I call it and that helps with the cost of shipping supplies. At the most I make about $2 on every package that goes out but usually it's right around a buck extra for shipping

    There's a flip side as well in my opinion. Maybe the seller is opting for your item over another seller due to geographic location and your shipping is already lower than the others. I don't see the reason to discount that shipping on an item that the buyer has clearly already made the decision on. I could see offering two different shipping options to them. It seems like they'd already be happy to have a choice. Just my opinion of course.

    Good video. The nice thing about a niche is that all my shipping costs are the same 95% of the time. I’ve got my flat rate calculated to the penny. When I have to combine orders “manually” (the seller didn’t use the cart, but instead purchased and paid for each item separately), I always issue a refund, minus the 30¢ transaction fee. I haven’t adjusted for when the fee is 40¢ - I’m just eating that extra cost for now. I believe giving that refund helps earn followers because they see that I’m doing the best that I can for them without over-subsidizing their shipping costs.

    If your gonna do this dont do the full discount do a custom %. don't pay for supplies and fees out of your margin. I wish i could negotiate rates, i do like 40 packages a week, but 99% go through usps because its always the cheapest without that negotiated discount

    I offer my discount, BUT I do charge a shipping and handling fee to cover the cost of the materials I use. Otherwise, I lose money.

  • @pnw-coast
    @pnw-coast 5 місяців тому +1

    This is good advice. I've been doing the same, passing along my shipping discount for calculated shipping and adding a handling fee. But if the item is under a pound, then I charge a flat rate that gives me a buffer to cover "handling". I think my reasonable shipping helps me maintain a healthy STR on my items. There's another reseller on UA-cam that started passing along her shipping discount and her sales on heavier items improved, which she attributes to the shipping discount. Some people in her video's comments also said that making that shipping change gave their sales a boost as well.
    Some sellers just don't want to 'give' anything to their buyers, but then are surprised that buyers don't want to buy from them. You can lead a horse to water and all that. C'est la vie.

    I have noticed several people selling low like $3 then charging $18.95 shipping? When it really should be about $5 shipping. So making money off shipping that way. I am a little confused because we never have done that or thought of that.

      I think those years are gone when ebay didn't charge fees on shipping and sellers abused that loophole. No longer matters now, sellers have to pay fees on total. Why bother to play that game.

    That's a great idea, however, don't you have to have enough sales to begin with to get the discount rate from say UPS or Fed Ex? I use Pirate ship becyit uses less ink by not adding the added information to the shipping label page when printing. I just save that information to my computer in Pirate ship. I will check out the shipping preferences though to try to save more money to the buyer. Thanks for this valuable information.

    At time of listing I weigh and get the dimensions of an item. If an item costs $10.00 to ship to Seattle from TEXAS and the same package costs $8.00 to ship to Oklahoma I place a Flat Rate shipping cost of $9.00. So I lose $1 to Seattle and gain $1 to Oklahoma. It averages out and the customer is never over-charged or under-charged much.
    Using this method I have not had a customer complain about shipping cost in years.

      Most of my competition does free shipping.
      I don't. I use a flat rate between $20-$30 on most. There are more sales than I can handle most days.
      I have an advantage selling to cross country buyers who think my shipping price is reasonable. I add a little back into the price of the item to compensate. Americans can't do math in their heads.
      Without a calculator, most buyers are helpless. 😂
