- Good quality, full clip, of Madonna performing 'Like A Virgin' on Solid Gold in 1984 wearing the "imfamous" punk wig she also wore on Top Of The Pops in the UK in January 1985. This is an iconic performance from Madonna's music career.
I still cant believe I was there Live...when I was 14 years old...lol

Wow, I vividly remember watching this at 8 years old. It sticks out in my memory because the long pink hair threw me off. She had been famous for about a year at this point and this wasn't her normal appearance. It was the beginning of her desire to constantly keep us surprised with her changing appearance. It was genius of her.

I actually think when Stevie Nick's performed Stand Back hers was live. It doesn't sound recorded. I know when I went to a taping in 83 it was lip synched.
You all don't have any idea how momentus this was for Madonna. She was no where near a household name when this aired, and when it came on it was seriously mesmerizing. It was a new sound from an emerging artist, VERY risqué for Solid Gold, or for television in general. As silly as the pink wig seems now, it was really bold at the time. It screamed, "take notice," and people did. It was a bigger moment than you know.
I thought it was odd that she never slowed down enough in front of the camera for viewers to get a good look at her face, which was quite different from how she normally appeared around this time as a relatively new artist trying to promote herself. It’s like she didn’t want people to really see her. There had to be a reason.

@@danwilliams1920 Maybe to create mystery, that era’s look for her hadn’t quite been cemented in the public consciousness so perhaps she was experimenting or just trying something different. I’m a little cynical and wonder if there’s a more practical purpose, like perhaps there were tech issues and didnt feel she’d be able to hear the audio well enough to mime the lyrics correctly and moved around to make it unnoticeable. That’s not a dig or an insult. Stuff happens with these tv productions and the performer sometimes has to improvise.

Madonna worked 1 day as waitress at Dunkin' Donuts in Times Square, NYC.
While studying dance, worked at the club rock bar Second Chance.
She also worked as a hat check girl at The Boston Tea Party& posed nude for various photographers& starred in a movie called " A Certain Sacrifice" that took 4 years to complete.... Yeah she worked quite a few odd jobs in those days
And no she worked at Dunkin Donuts for way more than just one day lol she was fired for putting too much jelly filling in the donuts😉😉✌🏾️

This appearance seemed strange to me. So she’s got the wig flapping around everywhere, and she is dancing in a way that makes it so the camera can never really get a good look at her face, which would be very odd for almost any relatively new artist trying to get their image out there but especially so for this particular artist for whom self-promotion was basically an art form. You could come away from watching this having almost no idea what this girl really looked like. I wonder what the reasoning was. Maybe she was having an off day or something, or maybe there was a technical reason.
@MonaLisaDaVinci-ec2co Didn’t she lip synch often in these early TV appearances? I’m not aware of any live TV versions from around this time other than MTV. I wonder if maybe a tech issue made it so she couldn’t hear the track well enough to lip synch properly, so she purposefully avoided allowing the camera to get a good look at her face.

Madonna the guest singer in solid gold sings number 1 songs like a virgin.
Almost forgot that Rick Dees had also hosted Solid Gold for about a Hot Second back in the day. I DO remember, however, watching this episode AND the fact that "the Hoff" was there to introduce her.
To this day, I still don't understand why Madonna wore that wig on "Solid Gold"! But, her performance was still awesome!

I remember seeing this when it originally aired, and I was twelve years old. Now seeing it all these years later, I have to say that there is really nothing special about it AT ALL -- and I'm one of Madonna's biggest fans. First of all, she, of course, isn't really singing the song (which, I KNOW, no artist really sang when they appeared on Solid Gold), and she's not really dancing, but rather prancing incessantly. So odd that she couldn't have done something better with the performance in that department since she had talent as a dancer, and studied with Alvin Ailey. Her live performance of "Like a Virgin" at the MTV Video Awards, however, was amazing, and far superior to the one here.

And @Love Animals... you do realize (in hindsight) that this was a rare performance from her on free over-the-air TV? Solid Gold was a syndicated weekly TV show. Not everyone has cable TV back in those days where they can watch her videos regularly on the MTV channel.
