    The reason why voice actors can voice act extremely well is due to the fact that they have had experience being an actor. Eric Vale is right because every famous voice actor I know of (Tara Strong, Chris Sabat, Mike Myers, Liam O'Brain) they have done acting before and are able to improvise and translate their voices into something people can imagine and recognize. People say I can imitate voices well and that I could be a good voice actor, but I just can't do acting. Mainly due to stage fright.

    and being comfortable enough to put myself out there, I panicked, and dropped the acting course and stopped showing up to the club
    I was insecure, doubting myself after seeing how successful and comfortable other people were, and seeing how long acting had been a part of their lives. How much they knew while I was inexperienced and terrified of failing.

      Failure is inevitable and you have to learn to accept the fact that you’ll fall flat on your face a couple times but if REALLY love what your doing then the fear of failure melts away because instead of worrying about whether you’ll fail or not, your too busy having a blast! This is so late but please don’t give up ❤️

    I recently completed 17 years in the US Navy; when my wife asked me what I wanted to do with my life now, without all the rigidity of military life, I told her I wanted to be an actor. Over the last couple of years, i've been in community theatre, and i've been on stage once, and work behind the scenes on three. When I walk out on stage, no matter what's happening- cue to cue, lighting checks, or performance, even just crossing the stage, it feels like home. Thanks again.

    The fact that Eric said to be an actor is so great, because although your skill is a big part of it, another huge factor of getting into voice acting is WHO YOU KNOW. If you never start acting in plays and such, nobody can refer to your talent, and you're not likely to ever get brought into a larger project. I'm going to join an acting class this month and am SO EXCITED to get started! Thx a lot, Eric! I used to act in plays a lot, but then the director had too many things going on to continue, so since then, I haven't been able to act (aside from my UA-cam channel). I understand this passion you speak of, and I hope to get into a more widespread voice acting and maybe meet ya one day.

    To love the character you put your being in, to love the stories you make despite others saying its garbage with no real reason. To show friends and family your work and get there opinions. I do this every day, I am not going to lie when I draw a comic I don't just imagine what and how they do it, I act it out in my house, I literally go into my hallways, pretend I am that character, do the scene till I love it, draw it then do it again.
    Is this what it takes? I did that ever sense I was 12, yet I never really had the chance to do theater in high school, and in collage I took the tech route to make games and art. I love pretending that I am someone else, I love moving my body the way they would. I am not lucky, cool, or even talented in much that I do. Yet I still do it. I think, no, I KNOW I can do it.

    As much a knack you have for acting, you have for writing as well. Your speech at the end... it reminded me of two silly little oaths I swore to the sky I had since forgotten... I promised myself that before I died I would do everything and I swore I would never break a promise. Maybe that's why I love acting, that's why I love writing, I love drawing, I love designing video games. They're outlets to fuel my dreams, thank you for reminding me of my goals and thank you for the inspiration.

    So what you're saying is, do the work, commit yourself, devote yourself wholly to the craft, and you have a chance of being successful at it? In other words, the same as any career where you love what you are doing and don't just view what you do as a job. Great advice.

    • @ThatCreeNative1
      @ThatCreeNative1 9 років тому +2

      Bayan1905 I find that kind of stupid. Because there is not tutorial other than some might take forever to learn or some will have a knack for it. I want to see more video on how to become and yet the same result is stupid. If anything my advice is to simply stay in a room for hours on end trying voices or practicing one you want to hone. I actually do a lot of that in my all the time free time. Might as well until someone bugs me to get a job or whenever I have to get one.

    • @CubicInsanity
      @CubicInsanity 9 років тому

      +DashingNative You can have all the voice talent in the world, but if you can't emote properly, the acting will fall flat and unsatisfactory. That's why ACTING is the keyword in voice acting. That's the entire point of the second half of this video.
      Some of the best voice actors don't have to change their voice at all and they still put on an amazing performance.

    • @ThatCreeNative1
      @ThatCreeNative1 9 років тому

      CubicInsanity Lol. I'm an actor or well aspiring to be one. But I find that to be an essential part of any acting. I don't know. For me it was easy. The difference is actually getting noticed.

    • @CubicInsanity
      @CubicInsanity 9 років тому +1

      Acting is an art and just like drawing or painting, some people are naturally gifted and some have to work for it. I don't find acting to be all that difficult, but for some people, they struggle getting the emotions or movements down right. So just like some people who really want to draw but don't have the natural talent, they have to take classes and really practice and work at it.
      Just because it's one way for you doesn't mean it's the same for everyone. =\ Eric's advice isn't necessarily *wrong*. And even the naturally gifted need lessons and instruction, y'know?

    • @ThatCreeNative1
      @ThatCreeNative1 9 років тому +1

      CubicInsanity Well practical things for me ain't hard. It's doing stuff that actually requires skill is what matters. Operating a space shuttle. Hacking. Acting though? Nahh. With what I do, may it be getting hurt or something. I say there's always something worse or harder. Which makes it easy.

  • @jojop4818
    @jojop4818 11 років тому +2

    This guy explains the passions of acting, quite clearly. When he says you need to love the sucky part of acting, you actually do. Everything about your life, you respond with a line, a witty comment, and action. Acting is acting, and reacting, not regurgitation. It's a portrayal of life, and while some people may find us dramatic (which we are), its really the funniest way to have an outlook on things. Im so glad God made me an actor, I mean HALLELUJAH! When you're voice acting, you can't just insert your funny voices into lines, you yourself have to become animated in every aspect, body, face, and most importantly vocals. You can't respond with..."well, I like acting...but uh...well I get nervous." Suck it up, my friend. You gotta love the sucky parts too~ And yes do everything! Directing is the most enjoyable to me, theres just something about sculpting a show.....If you think you're ugly? In the world of show business, believe it or not, you're desirable. Sing, or at least train your vocals! Dance, a lot, this will actually help your movement on stage. Do live shows, as well as film. Personally film is a bit more intimate, but isolated, whereas live shows are incredibly interactive, and your audience is always fresh! Don't forget writing, even if its not eloquent, if you're creative enough, you'll have some good ideas, that (who knows) could turn into something, my fourth try at writing actually turned into a show! And lastly, please don't expect to get rich and famous, its all for the passion, I thank God immensely that I even love performing in the first place. Trust =me when I say you'll just be happy making a proper living. Keep auditioning, keep going, and keep praying that the energy keeps coming! Performing is a privilege, youngsters.
    God bless you all!
    JoJo.

    If you don't listen to dubs, then why are you bothering listening to me? Also, I'm pretty sure in Japanese 'names' and 'words' are both considered 'words'. I'm not into my school plays because they're short budget and I dislike most of the actors. It's a very uptight school, catholic, all boys, and high on the scale of education. So as much as I want to be in a play, I can't stand to limit myself to bad Shakespeare with a bunch of people I hate.
    But I still act. In my daily routine I always joke with friends and we have plenty of scenarios where we just dick around and act out a situation. I do regret the lack of play experience since my 7th grade year but when I was in a play with people who I could get along with, it was a blast. My friend and I stole the show, and I was only Augustus Gloop. I wore a fat suit and my male friend was the mom. Priceless at the time.
    So my question is: Would that be enough? Acting on a daily basis but not to boring Shakespeare (I love Hamlet though).

  • @EricValeRocks
    @EricValeRocks  11 років тому +1

    Well it's not just random. That's something everyone should pay attention to. I was in theater (hard work) with someone who remembered me (building relationships/networking) and she sought me out to give me a phone number for an audition. I left a good impression on the director (crafting a reputation/being professional) and he called me back because of that. A lot goes into the "random grand opportunity."

      Why are you scared? You only live once. I'm not an actor but I used to be shy and was afraid about what other people thought of me. My advice to you is TURN IT OFF!!! turn off that part of you that's scared of something and just do it if you fail keep going...what do you think people are going to hurt or kill you if you mess up or something? Secret is NO ONE CARES AT ALL WHAT YOU DO!!! I know that sounds mean but after I realized that I opened up to more people and became a better friend, husband, and son. Your just making your life harder by not trying to do what you love.

But I'm gonna try because I live to read and write and sing and just put myself in what I do creatively. Only thing holding me back was nervousness. Carlos Marulanda Daryl Hannah and Paddy Considine have done okay. If you have trouble with condescending discrimination in the US, try the UK. try everywhere. Email recordings, send auditions, Just have a go. Remember, there is no reason not to apply for acting and vo work even before you are good, because that opportunity will be gone anyway if you wait till you are better.

    Thank you so much for making this video. When I was little, my dream was to become an actor (actress, actor, what have you) and I'd often play made up characters with friends. As I got older (I am currently a senior in high school) I veered more towards voice acting and have finally opened up enough to commit myself fully to becoming an voice actor.
    I started taking an acting course last year and joined the theater club but as soon as the reality hit me of being on stage,

No long semantics, it's just people seem to forget that in order to get any level of proficiency in a skill, they must put in the effort. It's heartening to see someone up top remind us of that simple fact. Here's to all guys and gals that did impressions and decided to make it a living. Cheers!

    It's really disheartening to hear that every anime voice actor has just had a friend in the business or they happened into the job by chance. What about the people who work really hard to be voice actors? I haven't heard a story yet where they got a voice coach, sent out demos, worked towards a goal and finally came to funimation.

A lot of never had a single 'on stage' acting debut, and yet we're doing quite well in the industry. You do realize Kyle Jordan that it's all about connections and who you know in the industry right? There's even schools that help teach you voice acting techniques and skills, and upon completion will provide you with a contacts list to start. Good luck with your future and life there Kyle Jordan. Also I never stated that I knew anything of Acting if you actually took the 5 seconds to 'read' my post.

    • @MsRandomPro
      @MsRandomPro 10 років тому

      Well for example, try to lay all of you're cards on the table, literally,
      but do it on a high level so that, like you said.. so it doesn't sound and comes out selfish.
      Step one1: Write everything down that you want to say,
      basically write down how you feel from your heart, all you're emotions how you really feel, exploit yourself, then after a week or so take a look on what you have written so far, or 4th day mark, then, step2: pick out the important things and this can take a while but let it do so, you will make it perfect.
      While you doing all of this, everything you have written down is how "you" really feel, from you're heart because that is how you can back it up,
      everything that you say with will come out with confidence, and that will show in eyes and the sound of you're voice, because if you lie about what you have written you not only going to lie to you're parents but you are laying to you're self,
      and that will show in how you present it later on, in eyes and voice etc.
      if you have done this serious by heart, then that will show great results.
      I hope this will help you, because the most important thing is how you as a person feels, do what you really like of doing and not be forced in to something that you don't like is not good at all it can and after a long while lead to deep depression.... and that is not good for the health at all, so yeah, i hope this helps you out,
      and one more thing, memorize everything!! and remember to always keep eye contact when you speak and use hand signals while you talking, that will enforce things you say, if you like for example say "i feel a slight change and i'm depressed, so i hope you will listen to what i have to say.. pause... something lays buried deep in my heart" then you you take your hand to your heart. stuff like that.
      Btw i copyright this.
      Good luck.

Nothing beats the audience's reactions and final applause.

So if ya boss asks you to answer a certain question everyday upto a hundred times a day, ya got to answer that question every time its asked. If not, "QUIT"!!! If ya was to take away all the fans you have, who in turn buys what you're selling. They tend to forget, no fans, no sales. No sales means no income, no income means; "NO FUCKING JOB"!!!!!

      Ghetto Monk T.V. Doing standup comedy is still a form of acting though. You have to be on stage in front of dozens, hundreds, thousands of people. You have to learn how to project your voice, use your face and body to express what you're saying, and speak in a way that makes a story entertaining. You have to memorize lines and learn how to ad lib when you forget them.

    I loved this. Vehemently agree on the "be an actor" mindset being an absolute must for aspiring VO talents. FAR too many are unaware that a cool or unique voice with no motivation or storytelling technique behind it, makes for a dull character.
    Although it can be a MASSIVE help to many, I respectfully disagree with the notion that enjoying being on stage is a necessity. This conflicts with the path taken by myself and a number of my colleagues. Though, I love studying/working with stage actors.

  • @GameDestroyerXYZ

    I know this is video is a bit old but I feel I need to comment on this. I get the main idea of what you're saying. And I agree that in order to be a successful voice actor, you need to be an actor first. I'm not going to argue with that. I just started to take acting lessons, and am interested in pursuing all forms of acting. However, there are some implications in this video that I feel could be off-putting to some people and could even cause people to give up on their dreams.
    You mention how you've been involved in acting (via theater) since you were 12. You talk about how you always wanted to be an actor, and how you've had years and years as a classically trained actor throughout middle school and high school. And also when talking about fans who come up to you for advice, you specifically gave an example of a fan who was still a child.
    Based on this, it can easily be assumed that you are implying that in order to be a successful voice actor (or in actor in general), you had to have trained in acting since you were a child, and be a full-on, classically-trained thespian. Well what people who are already adults, who perhaps just discovered their love for acting? Are you saying that it's too late for them? Is that the point you're getting at with this video?
    Because if that's the cause, then it's a shitty point to try to make. Not only that but it's elitist bullshit. Some people do not discover their passions in life until their in college, or in their 20s, or even 30s. Heck some people never had the chance to do theater as a child, either because their schools didn't offer it, their parents were restrictive, they didn't have the confidence at the time to try it, etc. Who the hell are you to tell these people to (or at least imply) give up their dreams, just because their lives didn't follow the perfect linear path where everything fell into place at exactly the right time?
    I'm hoping I'm making a false assumption. Because the fact that you don't even mention the idea of adults just starting out in acting, makes it seem like you're on of those snobs who believe that people should only pursue something if they started out in it as a child. If you included a part where you said that it's never too late to get into acting, I probably wouldn't be so off-put by this video. But you didn't do that. And now we have several people in the comment section who are now giving up on their dreams, because of your elitism.
    You have to understand that a lot of people looked up to you and your many roles in anime growing up. I was a huge fan of your work since you voiced Trunks in DBZ. And it is wrong to be super elitist when it comes to your field. If anything you should be encouraging people to join the field if they are interesting, not being a condescending asshole. Yes we understand that in order to be a voice actor, you must be an actor first. But don't try to push this false idea that people who didn't do acting as a child are "too late", because they are NOT.
    Oh and by the way, several your fellow voice actors at Funimation such as Christopher R. Sabat, Sean Schemmel, Justin Cook, and John Burgmeier were not classically trained thespian actors before they got into voice acting. So yeah, you might want to be more familiar with the backgrounds of other voice actors, because there are many different ways to break into the field. There I'm done ranting. I doubt you will read this comment, but on the off chance that you do, I hope it offers some food for thought. And most of all, I hope this comment will encourage people to not give up on their dreams of becoming an actor/voice actor.

    Oh my gosh. I know you're probably not going to read this, but I'm gonna write this anyway. Ever since I was 13 I knew that I wanted to be an actress, be it on stage or behind a camera or behind a microphone, I didn't care; so when I got into high school, I took every drama class I could and immediately got into the theatre program. In total, I've been in about 7 plays (four of them being musicals). I absolutely loved being on stage, but the best part by far is hearing the crowd roar when I took my final bow... omg. okay. getting side tracked. I'm in college now, and my passion for acting has been put on the back burner because I need to focus on a logical career choice for the future.. It's been almost a year now since I've performed, and, to be honest, I was sort of losing interest in acting because it had been so long. I just want to thank you. This video has inspired me to focus on my passions again. Thank you Thank you Thank you!!

Keep your passions, and keep a safer future but try voice acting if you cant focus on physically acting :)

I think people are more interested in becoming a VA because they just want to be in the position that others are in rather then actually wanting to preform. An actor should want to act regardless of what form it is. My sister graduated from ATM with a B.A. in theater and now does acting in Houston. She works 8 hours a day and then rehearses all night. 5:50 This sort of experience is something I can never get enough of. Just reminding me of it further kindles my desire to do more acting.

    I have found listening to old radio shows from the 1920-1950's helps a lot. When NBC and CBS were founded in 1926 and 1927 respectively. Radio programming became national and Americans from coast to coast heard the same shows. Really how these companies got started was through radio broadcasts. Some of the biggest stars of the era started on radio.
    So that backs up the whole notion of being an actor first. Original shows like Casablanca, The Shadow, Johnny Dollar, The Green Hornet, Gunsmoke, Dragnet, Dick Tracy. I love listening to these old radio shows. How they were able to get into character always fascinated me. A lot of this you really had to leave to your imagination. Which made voice acting all the more important in these roles.
    It really is a good place to start in getting a feel for voice acting. In some ways I feel voice acting is harder than acting. How you control your voice and are able to project that to an audience is not as easy as it sounds. However the better you get at it the more opportunities are going to open up for you. Not saying you're going to be the next Don LaFontaine or Seth MacFarlane lol.
    But maybe if you lucky or sell your soul. You might actually end up making a career out of it. However the reality of it is most voice actors don't make anywhere that much. The 15 year old that played the character in Frozen didn't even get $1,000 for her efforts. That was truly pathetic for a movie that grossed over a billion dollars.
    But then again we are talking Disney here so that shouldn't surprise anyone lol. While voice actors of today may not have the same pedigree as their golden age counterparts. A career in voice acting can still be quite rewarding. Providing your sacrificing enough souls at the altar haha. Anyways some good advice from Eric here and really puts things into perspective. :)

    Thank you, Eric. I've been acting all my life and have asked myself this very question many times. So thanks for the hope! :D

    When Mark Hamill does the voice for the Joker, he still puts his whole body into the performance, even if it's mostly just his voice that is being shown. So, I understand why being an actor first can help with voice acting.

    What you said about who actors are "they love everything about life" spoke to me more than anything else in this video haha I've always wanted to try my hand at acting because of that actually haha

    You don't necessarily have to be an actor to get into the business. Mel Blanc was not a trained actor when he broke in. He was a guy that was blessed with a wide vocal range that allowed him to do an assortment of zany voices. Going to drama school wont help if you don't have the talent to make your voice convey different personalities, and sound different. I came to this video looking for suggested contacts for places looking for voice talent. That would have been more helpful.
