It’s not a prayer. He is singing a love-story poem from Hafez. He has many songs with instruments in this specific melody, called Bayat-e-Tork. Because his vocals were so strong, he could afford to sing with no instruments. In fact, this song was recorded for a movie titled ‘Delshodegan’ which was about the very first Iranian musicians sent by the state to Europe to record the first Persian music album.

I'm amazed at how Master Shajariyan can sing Persian poetry from 700 or 800 years ago with such melody and rhythm using only his voice and no musical instruments.
The lyrics of the song is one of the romantic and mystical poems of Hafez, the great Iranian poet, which Master Shajarian has recited with great beauty and skill. The mindset in Persian traditional music is quite different from the modern commercial approach to music, where we have five-minute songs with catchy choruses, designed to be easily digested. It's like the difference between a gourmet meal and fast food. "Saz o Avaz" (this form of Persian traditional music with free rhythm and complicated improvised melodies) is supposed to be contemplative, and it's indifferent to listener's instant gratification from cheap tricks.

Thanks man. BTW what he sings here is on of the Hafez's poems, an iranian legendary poet. Let's not forget about his glottal tune technics which is hard to acheive in this level even for most of the masters
This is a dashti song. Shepherd's who were leading the herd in the steppes and plains usually sang very sad songs. This is a modern rendition of those.
It a poem of Hafez one of the greatest poets and its about appreciation of eyes of a turkish princess. If love is a religion this could be one of the best religious prayers of all time I would say.
The lyrics are from Hafiz, the great mystic poet of Persia in 14th century. Indeed to a foreign ear it might sounds like Quran recital or prayer but if I'm not mistaken this tune is in Bayat Turk which is a subcategory of Shur which is one of the most important modals of Persian traditional music.
You are so right for a person who don't know Farsi ,this kind of singing , sound like a religious ! But he just singing the Hafez poem and I think it's from the movie called دلشدگان delshodghan movie (which is fantastic movie)

And this debate has been ongoing for about 700 years now. Just for your information dear Mace; the favorite poet of Shajarian is not Hafez, it is Omar Khayyam.
hello Mr mace the piece of art that you just listened is called Saz o avaz there is an entire philosophy behind it. that philosophy is called ERFAN . it means knowing in word and it's definition is is that someone is trying to totally forget everything about material and materialism and gets out of the world and his body and travels towards his creator which is the one and only Allah.so the main difference between religion and and so called ERFAN is that you you actually fall in pure love with your God and creator and the only reason that you worship it and the only reason that you you leave the world is it you want to meet him just because you love him and and you love the way that your relationship is. it is actually a long and time-consuming matter-of-fact and I just wanted to to give you a little hint about what you just hurt and thank you for you pure and honest reactions
These are actually very rarely prayers! In fact, usually the opposite. About lovers, wine, fleeting nature of life...etc They are mainly Persian poetry of Hafez, Sa’di, Khayam, Rumi etc Probably really just the one “Rabanah” is an actual prayer! Legendary man though!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Persian poems are based on Mystical states, poets in the Persian history were delivered meaning of the love, life, human, goodness, kindness، liberation, salvation, in the universe through the deep beautiful Persian language! One of the remarkable message that most of the poems are delivering is to not depends on Worldly materials..!! So Just imagine hearing those beautiful messages through the exceptional Mohammed Rezza Shajarian vocal..!! thats why you feel peace ✌️ Thank you for the smart choice🙏🙏
These are all poems from famous poets like hafiz, sa’di, etc. mostly love poems. This way of singing is called avaaz in Persian traditional music and they are NOT religious at all. (In some cases they may have spiritual meanings too; Sufism for instance)
You know why there is no instruments? The instrument player refused to play, coz this AVAZ is beautiful without any instruments. Watch the movie DELSHODEGAN, it's all there
Wow! :) If you can "digest" that, I recommend the album "Gole Sadbarg" by Shahram Nazeri. You can react to any piece with singing on that album (there are instrumental parts as well). It is marvellous. Maybe you react to "Zarbi, Bayate Tork" (Che danestam). It is the very last piece of the abum. Mesmerising! And the lyrics are the very same as the "Avaz" by Homayoun Shajarian, but in my mind, I always will hear them with Nazeri's voice and melody :)
This type of music is so deeply related to old culture of iran One have to learn things on what is love in iraninan culture My recommendation is just react to the artistic aspect of his vocal or the instrument Other than that the way iraninan express their love in poetry is amazingly different and deep, specially when they describe the beauty of a lover for example by comparing the beauty and softness of skin to flower and so on When there is a shout in singing it's like when you shout sadly when you can't reach someone or something you want.
You know! In Persian classic music, the lyric is so important. That's why singers usually sing poetries of great poets in order to give u the great meaning and content. Also, each meaning requires a specific form of music which is called "DASTGAH دستگاه (=system)". for example DASHTI system is for sad mood or mourning. In other words, content and form should match! that's the way to convey your message! Thus, understanding the lyric is almost a "must". cuz classical music wants to give u something and not just feel it!
Hello Thank you very very much for your affords to make known our great side of culture and music to the world. This is a piece of vocals called AVAZ /ɒvɒz/ and the poem is from Hafez (a famous ancient persian poet). It was performed by demand of director Ali Hatami in 1992 for his historical romantic drama movie: DELSHODEGAN, for a scene, in that, a singer is falled in love with a turkish princess, who, he can not reach to. It is performed in a frame called BAYAT E TORK. The primitive record was recorded by shajarian himself alone with a small recorder(walkman) in a mountain and then the quality was increased by equipments in studio.
This was performed for a movie called "Delshodegan (or Love-stricken)": en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Love-stricken You can find another musical part of this movie as follow: ua-cam.com/video/1pBnEWKcbQU/v-deo.html&start_radio=1
This kind of music (not the lyrics) is called "آواز" "aavaaz". It means no instruments are included. Now "Saaz o aavaaz" would also include instruments, but still no rhythm. Whereas, "ghet'eh" is a piece of music that only includes instruments (no vocals). and in the end, there is "Tasneef" which includes vocals and instruments with rhythm. :)
Hi Mace. Trying to clarify this for you. This really isn't about Iranian culture or poetry as much as it is about the universal art of human ability. It really is about vocals. He is a vocal contortionist if you will.
You shouldn't miss Mohamadreza Shajarian's song which was his last one in Iran because of its lyrics which was against the government so that Islamic Republic didn't let him to do any live performance in Iran after that. Its an extremely epic song for the protests of Green Movement of Iran people. The name of that song is "Shajarian- Zabane Atash" which litteraly means "the language of Fire" sarcastically means "the Gun". the lyrics starts with "Tofangat raa zamin bogzar" which means "Put your gun down".
Hi! This is a voalization of a poem of Hafiz of Shiraz (The great Persian (Iranian) poet). This kind of vocalization is called Avaz. It is not praying or religious.
Mace tnx for your reaction. I suggest to ask your colleague to put Farsi subtitle to your videos about Iranian music especially reaction to Great Maestro it will help those Iranian whom do not know English understand and connect to your feelings and believe me u will get 80million likes because all the Iranian folks love Great Maestro.

Well done mace! You are one open minded nusic lover.
These are all poems from famous poets like hafiz, sa’di, etc. mostly love poems. This way of singing is called avaaz in Persian traditional music and they are NOT religious at all. (In some cases they may have spiritual meanings too; Sufism for instance)
It’s a love poem by Hafiz. Gholame Chashm means the slave of your eyes.
Very very beautiful 💖💖💖💖
If you learn farsi you'll know that beautiful purpose of this poem.
Hafez did great things in all his poems.
fantastic
It’s a poem from Hafeez, a famous poet who Gote adored him
You know why there is no instruments?
Hi Thanks for the great Job you do،
This poem or song is by Hafez, the most famous and popular Persian Poet
I was captured by his voice at an early age.
Who wasn't? 🙂
the song is part of an Iranian movie entitled as "Delshodegan"
This type of music is so deeply related to old culture of iran
One have to learn things on what is love in iraninan culture
My recommendation is just react to the artistic aspect of his vocal or the instrument
Other than that the way iraninan express their love in poetry is amazingly different and deep, specially when they describe the beauty of a lover for example by comparing the beauty and softness of skin to flower and so on
When there is a shout in singing it's like when you shout sadly when you can't reach someone or something you want.
It's persian with arabic alphabet.
What a beautiful poem and awesome voice.
I recommend you "Gonbade mina" by Mohammad Reza shajarian. The instrumentals of this song are just for an other world..
Fantastic choice. I wish you could understand Persian language. This is just amazing. It's like looking at a beautiful painting, artwork.
Hello
Thank you very very much for your affords to make known our great side of culture and music to the world.
Hi, I am also a fan of Master Shajarian and I also play the Tar. And one question, where are you from and do you know Persian?
This song is all about love, the great Hafez Shirazy said the poem centuries ago. Hafez is all about love
He is talking about the eyes of the beloved ..
این بنده خدا رپ گوش میده ببین چه اهنگ سنتی بهش پیشنهاد دادن😂 ما ایرانیها چون خودمون عاشق شجریانیم توقع داریم همه اون رو گوش بدن
This was performed for a movie called "Delshodegan (or Love-stricken)": en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Love-stricken
You can find another musical part of this movie as follow:

Awesome
Hi! This is a voalization of a poem of Hafiz of Shiraz (The great Persian (Iranian) poet). This kind of vocalization is called Avaz. It is not praying or religious.
Thanks
This is a poem from Hafeze Shirazi an Iranian poet !
Hi

Tnx mace.
🌟In traditional type of musics in iran we have 2 style : 1. Tasnif( morghe sahar) 2. Avaz( rabana or gholame cheshm)
95% of Iranians don’t give two shits about religion. It’s funny how you see it by reading the comments. Don’t dare bring up religion. I love it.
It’s not Quran. It’s a part of poem by one of the most famous and popular Persian poet Hafez.
