Grant, for the copper casting when you are melting the copper and it becomes molten add some borax that will help it cast better. Also add baby powder to the sand so then the copper and sand won't stick together Like so he can see
the problem with that is that you would need a way to focus the light and make it come in from a different direction, very high quality mirrors. Also, he would need to wear something that could resist 3000 degrees, which is only a space suit, and those don't even work.
I've been subscribed for years now and actually made my own solar scorcher like 4 or 5 years ago now, from your plans, and a craigslist big screen tv. I love how it's almost instantaneous ignition of you place wood in front of it, or making a molten pile of pennies. I'm happy to see it back in your video.
Turns out solar desalination is already a thing but it would be cool to see it on a small scale and Grant would probably find the most affordable solution.
you actually can, if fact someone made a solar 3D printer that uses that technique and a cnc robot to move the focal point of the sun and melt sand into glass structures
Grant, have you even tried checking how much heat it gives? If you were to check the temp every day, then in theory wouldn't you then know roughly when it will give the hottest beam?
You can keep your radioactive copper gear mould under this solar. scorcher and pour melted copper inside the mould. This would keep copper hot and not let is cold down fast! Maybe this can happen give it try!!!!
Can you ignite gasoline with candy? When my brother and I were kids we would go into a dark closet and watch each other bite mint candies (mint lifesavers, icebreakers, etc). It would create a blue spark. I later learn this was called triboluminescence. So, I'm wondering if this spark is enough to ignite a fuel source. This could be useful in a survival situation or as a camping hack.
you already answered your question, if u can contain the "spark" in your mouth, its far to weak to ignite anything. luminescence is basically light emission, so theres only a flash with very little energy. interesting story though xd
woe eyn Not necessarily. Magician and flame eaters are able to hold flames in there mouth, and those flames would be enough to ignite gasoline. Heck, even on Grant's Instagram he has a picture of his son holding flames in his hands and not being hurt. A static spark from your finger is enough to ignite gas fumes (the real culprit to the no cell phone at a gas pump myth), so why not the spark from Triboluminescence.
Quinlan Black Ok...but doesn't all light produce heat energy? Even fluorescent light produces heat energy; it's just such a small amount that it's barely noticeable to the human touch. So, this brings me back to my original question - does triboluminescence produce enough heat energy to ignite gasoline (or some other fuel source for that matter).
and that's a problem why? he already told us that flames from say a lighter won't do anything, and if you are trying to burn thermite you need 3000 degrees F... what kind of kid is going to find rust powder, and some aluminum powder and think, yeah let's get 3000 degrees F to light this up... even if you held a lighter to it, nothing will happen, it's mostly just rust powder....

I assure you that this is will documented somewhere.
Elastico345 - Mixels and other stuffs well using two blow torches make his melting projects much faster because the solar scorch can't melt much thing like steel for example
It would very rapidly boil off most, if not all of the nitrogen by the time it solidified. You could get pretty much the same reaction by heating up a pot on the stove at full heat, then pouring water in. Though I wouldn't recommend that, as it can leave you with severe burns.
I'm not sure about casting the metal, but there's a process called exothermic welding where you take two pieces of metal and push them together, wrap them in a metal with a lower melting point, and form a little crucible around it with special clay. You then add thermite around the melting metal and light it to permanently fuse the two pieces.
Just imagine having Grant as a dad. "Sorry kids, you can't play on the swing set today. Daddy's using it to light thurmite with the giant solar death ray."
When you mix fuel, metal oxide, and metal powder in just the right amount it burns at nearly 2000 degrees Celsius. Throw some C4 into the mix and it can take down almost any barrier known to man.
I tried to cast a mold with iron using thermite in 4th grade and what you need to watch out for is oxidation. When I first did it I did it the same way except I lit it off with magnesium. The second time I did it though I made a closed container with the mold in the base as to not let any oxygen in and it did make a nice solid nugget of iron with the mold in it and it mostly solved the oxidation problem.
dry ice would likely just make a lot of vapor, liquid nitrogen would just boil rapidly. Nitrogen is inert, which is why it's used to put out fires, and pumped into bags of chips to keep them from going stale!
To answer your question, yes, you can use thermite to cast iron. The railroad companies have been doing that for a long time to cast and fuse a break in two new track sections, or a cut out damaged track section.

Didn't you say you wanted to do something with glass? Try using the solar scorcher to melt sand (melting point of 3002°F).
Try to make glass with the solar scorcher

Pan Taylor I thank you meant melt
no, make. using sand and soda ash.
I second this, Glass the sandbox!
I was just gonna say that.

Awesome Andzo we are making them too
Awesome Andzo u still have school? mine ended a week ago
Some Guy Filipino??
is it possible to make glass by pointing the solar scorcher on sand
glass as you know it isnt only just sand
iamtheonewhoyoulove if runescape taught me anything it's sand and soda ash, whatever that is
Well, sure, while commercial glass is about 75% sand (silica oxide), you can make a glass-like substance from sand only.
iamtheonewhoyoulove You can get glass whenever lighting hits the beach
Meo Deez it would have to be extremely hot, lightning is near the temp of the surface of the sun
Well my laser lights it so I dont see why not since the "Solar Scorcher" is basically a high wattage laser.

Jack Drumm thanks for the intelligent comment... I knew something would go wrong with a sunlight powered foundry because I thought that too
He could do something to disrupt the light away from the foundry to take out the crucible .etc
I'm pretty sure he can find a way around it.

What would happen if you tried to melt sand in your crucible and turn it into liquid glass?
omg..... i dont know!!!
Hemlock the crucible wouldn't be able to melt sand
You answered what will happen "liquid glass"
Can the solar scorcher make glass?
Fluffycat264 the sand did not react so I believe not
Xэnochrom Because the solar scorcher wasn't focused on the sand
Fluffycat264 If it can light thermite then Yes it can make glass. can also melt glass if you can melt a clear piece of glass with it gl.
Or can you get thermite wet and it will still light
Thanks grant Thompson
L JOSHUAB L GAMING AND VLOGS Noice, you're gonna have your comment featured in a video
Dakota Larney, I was thinking the same thing.
Yay if I get featured then I will be happy
hi Grant! You should try to invent a way to ignite stuff from a distance with the scrorcher, that would make things a lot easier/safer
You should do a what happens when you put dry ice under the beem of the solar scorcher. like so that the king of random can see.
nothing impressive would happen. The dry ice would just sublimate faster
Bruh, some of these "what would happen" comments...
Gabriel Nieland BEEEEM
That's pretty funny.😂😂😂
given summer is right around the corner you should do a solar scorcher barbeque
Nikolai Brix Hermansen - 6J either way it's be cool to see what happens.
do you think you can melt tungsten with the with your solar ray of doom
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
it wouldnt work
with a melting point of around 6000F i would say not possible
if you want to melt tungsten you should prob use a oxyhydrogen torch xD
its basically a blow torch that is supercharged
You and the backyard scientist need to do a awesome collab involving liquid nitrogen or thermite
Can you do a selection of different methods to charge your phone in a survival situation.
you find a plug and a wire and you stick it in
If your solar death ray can ignite thermite, I wonder if it could boil metals/metalloids such as lead(dangerous), gallium(dangerous??), indium(dangerous?), or silver(not dangerous).
Make a video called, "Solar Scorcher vs Trash Can Foundery"... I would really like to see how each work indifferent from each other
Daniel Moffett lol I thought you wanted him to solar scorch the foundry first!
Ramon Van Santen I think he meant a comparison of the solar vs propane. look at green power science. Green power science did some solar scorcher and solar power steam and Stirling engine projects
I dont know why, but this was one of the most fun videos i've seen in a while
WARNING: Make sure you don't smoke pots too often or you might get addicted.
This solar scorcher will help you in casting with copper, it can easily evoporate the styrofoam so, just mix two projects for a new succesful project!!!!
yash patel but the sand will be melted to, I think.
sands melting point is 3002 F , so it will get harder but will not melt
sand will get harder but it will not melt
well, the scorcher can preheat the mold and help to keep the copper fluid longer for a full casting. I think the reason copper is such a challenge is how close you are heating to the melting point of copper.. it cools before below the line before you have time to cast. the scorcher would be a great idea for the mold. another suggestion would be to research a dope for the green same that will increase it's resiliency. I assure you that this is will documented somewhere.
yash patel but he said thermite ignites at 3000 Fahrenheit. If it can ignite thermite it can melt sand
Could the solar scorcher melt rock to make glass?
sand
AMineCraftFantasy i wanted to know can it melt rocs like his mini metal foundry
I meant sand

can you try melting metalls with it, like your backyard-foundering station does?
He already did, but not on camera
KentuckyFried Dragon how do you know?
Can thermite melt steel beams?
it burned at 3000 F, steel melts at about 1500, it will boil the steel pretty easily, like he said he melted copper... which takes 2000 degrees.
Jack Drumm uhmm, steel's melting point is 1500degrees Celsius....
Jack Drumm while copper's melting point is 2000degrees Fahrenheit
Jack Drumm He melted the copper with the solar scorcher not thermite.
I don't think the comment section adequately understood your reference. So I'll say it. 9/11 was an inside job.
You should make a DIY solar powered furnace like using your solar scorcher as a heating source
Elastico345 - Mixels and other stuffs well using two blow torches make his melting projects much faster because the solar scorch can't melt much thing like steel for example
It can. You just have to leave it on for a much longer time
can you weld with the solar scorcher?
idk
@@koton_bads then don’t answer
Grant Thompson - "The King of Random" Can the solar scorcher be used weld or fuse 2 pieces of metal together.
so if you left your big box tv outside and pointed toward the sun, would it melt the tv/explode?00
Aron McKeown no, because the focal point needs to be like 2 feet away.
What happens if you add a magnifying glass to it
magnifying glass might melt
Has it been 5 years since I started watching you? Time flies
which reaction was stronger the termite or you when it went off? 😂
how about making a thermite fuse and grenade like how you did with the coconut bombs im very curious
What happens when you put molten copper in liquid nitrogen?
dang i was going to say that!
It would very rapidly boil off most, if not all of the nitrogen by the time it solidified. You could get pretty much the same reaction by heating up a pot on the stove at full heat, then pouring water in. Though I wouldn't recommend that, as it can leave you with severe burns.
The Leindenfrost effect would let the copper slowly cooling off while making a big cloud of nitrogen
Ghost Rider its still be cool to see though.
I'm not sure about casting the metal, but there's a process called exothermic welding where you take two pieces of metal and push them together, wrap them in a metal with a lower melting point, and form a little crucible around it with special clay. You then add thermite around the melting metal and light it to permanently fuse the two pieces.

Can you make a LEGO Rocket ship actually fly?
great idea
3BrosInAction no probably not
3BrosInAction omg yes
you should put a sheet of metal on Sand and then let the iron melt onto the piece of metal and then see if it makes glass
Just imagine having Grant as a dad. "Sorry kids, you can't play on the swing set today. Daddy's using it to light thurmite with the giant solar death ray."
You should try burning kale wool (the stuff in your foundry) with the solar scorcher. P.s I voted for u ❤️
NightCrawler_ 408 Kao Wool*
NightCrawler_ 408 No, the fumes would make the air dangerous. And I'm pretty sure he mention something about gas masks not working.
I love it how you run away super fast, also freeze Gasoline with Liquid Oxygen!
Hynax didnt he already do that with nitrogen? oxygen wont be very special
Hynax that's basically rocket fuel. Probably a bad idea.
Can you attempt cook a chicken with the Solar Scorcher?
Timoosethy yes, hopefully he will
Every time you ran away from the sparks I can just imagine you saying "Move outta my way swing!"
Plz make a portable version of the solar scorcher !
Capricorn 1 it wouldn't get as hot the surface area wouldn't be as big it wouldn't work
Capricorn 1 its called a magnifying glass
When you mix fuel, metal oxide, and metal powder in just the right amount it burns at nearly 2000 degrees Celsius. Throw some C4 into the mix and it can take down almost any barrier known to man.
Aiden Jackson Yes! I knew I was going to find a Rainbow Six Siege reference!

Aiden Jackson Yes r6 is awesome

Try dry ice or liquid nitrogen vs solar scorcher
Andrew McDonald I was thinking about dry ice
dry ice would likely just make a lot of vapor, liquid nitrogen would just boil rapidly. Nitrogen is inert, which is why it's used to put out fires, and pumped into bags of chips to keep them from going stale!
Andrew McDonald like this comment pls.. >.
What will happen if you charge a phone or a similar electronic device with the arc welder? That would make for an interesting video.
Tuero not really
Tuero that would be cool to see
collab with techrax
phone 5v - arc welder 12v
it world fry the stuff inside the phone like the cpu and motherbord etc
Try to melt iron in ur homemade crucible and combind the heat of the solar schorcher and the crucible to try and melt iron plz
But the crucible doesn't give any heat, you're probably talking about the forge. Which makes even less sense since heat doesn't combine
To answer your question, yes, you can use thermite to cast iron. The railroad companies have been doing that for a long time to cast and fuse a break in two new track sections, or a cut out damaged track section.
Would the Solar Scorcher melt a solar panel or will it produce energy. Let's find out.
It would very likely melt it. I'm not sure what solar panels are made of, but I'll bet that they have melting points below the level of heat this can produce.
cool idea but it would probably melt
Harley Large would melt a solar panel, but there is a method of solar power collection method that uses a bunch of mirrors focused on a central tower, so you could generate power with this, it just wouldn't be a solar panel
You absolutely could use it to increase a panels power, but you'd have to put the panel closer than the focal point so that it DOESN'T melt.
Actually, that isn't really the case.
See, they're not really "producing" the heat, they just focus it and physics do the rest.
They won't normally melt, because the sunlight is dispersed all over it, and then they just focus it in 1 spot.
If you get another Solar Scorcher and focus it onto another one, it won't melt, probably, because it'll either re-focus it, or disperse it, depending on which side you focus the light beam in.
Not really sure about this, though, it's just how i feel about it
I want to see that happens , the ultimate battle , liquid nitrogen versus the sun powered panel of death. ;)
The liquid nitrogen would just instantly boil. Like water but the gas will be nitrogen instead of steam.
TheRandomGuy I made my own solar death ray and I did it with liquid butane. Even the flammability in it did not ignite, and it boiled instantly.
Kevin have you ever tried to boil ice the reaction is brutal, cause of the difference between the temperatures, also the time that needs to be completed is just awfully fast. So in my.oppinion the reaction will be extra violent.
Ryan White butane boils at room temperature
Keem Star so does liquid nitrogen. I cooled the container down to liquid butane temperature and the volume would stay for about 3 minutes boiled instantly
Will 2 Solar Scorcher capable of melting Tungsten and/or Turn Carbon into Gas?
I have been watching grants channel for a long time but never seen him so scared of his experiments
Solar metal foundry? :)
RebelRon I was thinking the same thing! It would be cleaner and easier to use if it worked
RebelRon liquid nitrogen wouldn't burn. It will just boil very vigorous and evaporate.
Grant Thomson- "The King of Random", can you melt sand with the Solar Scorcher?
Melt through a lock with thermite
I can't wait till my grandparents gets rid of their old tv so I can make one of these solar things
Could you reflect that light off of mirrors to see if it would retain its heat?
Can you use the solor scorcher on sand to make glass?

Yes you can cast the melting thermite! Railroad workers use a mold to join two pieces of track with the melting thermite.
