The creative experience is a roller-coaster - and we all experience the highs and lows of the journey over time. You are not alone, wherever you are on the path, even though it might feel like it sometimes.
In today's show, I talk to Steven Pressfield about The Artist's Journey.
Steven Pressfield is the author of non-fiction works including The War of Art and Turning Pro, and novels around the classical wars of ancient Greece and modern warfare like Gates of Fire. His latest book is The Artist's Journey: The Wake of the Hero's Journey and the Lifelong Pursuit of Meaning.
    Show Notes
On writing from the inside out rather than productivity hacking
How an artist’s subject remains the same over a lifetime, even though the work evolves
On writing from a deeply primal source.
How Steve gets out of his own way in order to write.
On the importance of creative habits and rituals.
How to discover our inner genius or destiny
Being true to what inspires us and therefore being a force for unity and empathy
    Having patience as an artist
    Learning from every writing experience
You can find Steven at www.StevenPress... and on Twitter @SPressfield

I don't blog. But I do a UA-cam channel on writing. 24 subscribers, little success, but like Steve said it's fun and you teach yourself.

OUR SUBJECT CHOOSES US, we stop wasting our lives, the battle with self sabotage. WE DEDICATE OURSELVES TO FINDING OUR VOICE AND ASK ... WHAT IS MY SUBJECT. [great ideas, must get this book]

All this information is very helpful for musicians and producers. I never have anything set in mind on what I’m going to create, I just sit down and start going off, the first thing that sounds cool to me, I go off that and it takes me on a journey I would’ve never thought possible lol every song i make, I always go back to and think, wow, I made this, where did it even come from? Everybody has the potential to amaze themselves, and when it happens, that should be the sign to keep going and never stop. You only got one life, make it meaningful and leave an impact.

Terrific interview! Thank you! Both of you are always so inspiring. Your discussion brought to mind an amazing book by Matt Cardin, "A Course in Demonic Creativity."

I love these interviews - you ask the very questions that I would ask!!! Joanna, can you please recommend a recording device and /or software for dictating your story. Many thanks

Glad you find them useful :)
      There's a playlist here on dictation - ua-cam.com/video/hOVREYzR1lw/v-deo.html
There are lots of options for hardware and software - but the main software used is Dragon.

Thank you for mentioning Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain. You are a true true artist, kind and empathic and in touch with your spiritual side so many do not yet understand.

Wow that was probably the greatest Steven Pressfield interview ever. First time when someone who interviewed him, know what he was talking about and and knew his works. Thank you🙂

I had my a-ha moment in April when I finished draft 4 of a novel and another story I'd had in the back of my head for years came up to the surface. So now I've accepted I'm a writer and not just trying to get a story out of my head.
One of the many things I like about Neil Gaiman is that most or all of his stories involve somebody being trapped or imprisoned somewhere.
I'll have to check out Anthony Bourdain and more Steven Pressfield.
    Really interesting interview, thanks!

It's important to remember that everyone has a different definition of "quality" so only judge your own work by your own standards.
