    Be thankful you can wear your British lab out playing fetch for 10 min or so. That’s just a warm up for these American field labs.

    I just finished watching through this series and man do I have to say thank you. I am getting a puppy here in a few weeks and these videos have gave me a lot of good insight on where to start (first time training a duck dog). Also, always great to see other California duck hunters on youtube!

    When doing retrieves singles or doubles always line your dog up in the direction of the bird or bumper. Make sure you tell your dog "here" and have him turn and line him up on the retrieve which should be the same as your body. This will help as you get longer retrieves and blind retrieves.

    I love your videos and appreciate that I can watch someone go through the process with the dog over time. only videos on youtube like this. I will be getting my silver Lab from the breeder in November and have ordered Chris' videos because of you. thanks for putting in the effort and time sharing your process and progress. I cant wait to start the process of growing a hunting buddy. Just started duck season over here in Washington and look forward to hunting the olympic peninsula with a dog next season. thanks for your videos. have you hunted with Rocky yet now that your season has started? will we see another video soon?

      Appreciate all the kind words! And thanks for following along on our journey. That’s cool you’re getting a silver those are super cool looking dogs. He did go on his first hunt yesterday and I’m trying to get the video up by Monday morn. He did good for being only 11 months but he still has a long way to go. As you know there are so many variables when hunting.

Just out of pure curiosity, cuz i've seen my buddy do this with his chocolate, have you got him to the point where you can send him to "2nd base," blow the whistle to get his attention and direct him over to either or?

  • @kevinwood8916

    I’ve been trying to train my CBR Female, and she is not patient after I throw the bumper. If I hold her than throw she does okay and goes on command, but I always have to hold her first.

    • @MidValleyMercenaries
      @MidValleyMercenaries  5 років тому

      Try using a short leash and not letting her realize you’re holding it by not putting pressure from the collar so if she does break you’ve got ahold of her.

    Rocky is looking awesome man! I just got my yellow lab a few weeks ago, any tips on dealing with walking such a young pup? Rocky seems really chilled out, but my yellow lab is wild, thanks

    • @MidValleyMercenaries
      @MidValleyMercenaries  5 років тому

      How old is he? If he’s real young you really can’t walk them per say. You can use a check cord to kind of keep them where you want them or from jumping on people or taking off completely but until they heel I wouldn’t worry about it too much

    • @kylemanning5230
      @kylemanning5230 5 років тому

    • @MidValleyMercenaries
      @MidValleyMercenaries  5 років тому

      You can walk him but just don’t expect too much out of him until you start him to heel

    • @kylemanning5230
      @kylemanning5230 5 років тому

      How many weeks was he when you began heel? I got the first video of Chris Adkins, but there wasn’t too much on early puppyhood.

    • @MidValleyMercenaries
      @MidValleyMercenaries  5 років тому

      Honestly there’s not a ton you need to do besides get him around people some fetch occasionally and crate training. I started obedience and collar conditioning around 5 1/2 months old

      Train train train. Get a short leash and say sit than throw bumper. Make him wait, than send him. Just do it over and over. He’ll learn trust me. Do it 5 minutes at a time. Couple times a day if you can

    Good stuff bro. Don't forget to say "mark" when you throw the bumpers. So he knows to mark them. Are you doing forcing to pile after this? "Dead bird back". Make sure you train in tall grass as well. If not he will always use eyes instead of nose. I trained in short grass for 1.5 years just recently got him not using just eyes lol. Here's an example.
