I have all the other cold steel hawks. This one is my hands down favorite. The weight balance and length of cutting edge is almost perfect. The Hudson Bay hawk has become my go to for going out into the woods
I'm glad to hear such a positive testimonial from another person who owns one!
My review of the Cold Steel Hudson Bay Tomahawk. This is my favorite of the four new hawks that Cold Steel introduced this year. To see all the new and old Cold Steel tomahawks, check out the text description box. Enjoy :]
Did you know they now have a regular camp axe in that head style? Says on a 27" handle. 2.75 pounds. Interesting setup on the head to wood stock. "Best of all, it features Cold Steel's ground-breaking clamp-like locking mechanism which is so ruggedly hard to "pull off" that it doubles the industry standard!"
Just got mine! Thanks for your video; it helped ❤
Hey, I've learned a lot about tomahawks in the last year or so from a guy who got me throwing them. CS hawks are all friction fit. They are projects, and you need to round the inner eye of the hawk head so it doesn't bite into the wood and shave the handle head to fly off. That's the friction. If the handles already chewed up. Use paper to wrap the handle and reset the head. Love your videos. They help me make decisions.
@@bazc1378 - Thank you, my bro!
This is actually really informative. I was expecting something... different... when I ordered mine but I understand the benefits. Thanks!
Hey man! Looking good dude! I was watching you almost 8 years ago! Crazy how time flies, my wife just ordered me this hawk, I'm excited to try this out. BTW I remember you being a Spyderco guy, ever get a chance to check out a shaman? A little thick for EDC but a great knife.
Thanks, my friend! I do love Spyderco, got the new Resilience in S35VN, have not tried the Shaman though.
Rule number one, if your going to use a spiked weapon in combat, carry three. Your bound to get one or two stuck, and not have time to remove it :)
Great video thanks.
Can you do a video on how you wrapped your handle
I also like a hammer and a sharp blade gives you two different surfaces on one tool or weapon, I really like that pipe hawk; reminds me of the tomahawk Mel Gibson used in “THE PATRIOT “.
Pretty nice hawk! I have the pipe hawk and love it.
CS hawks are kind of addictive.
Tell me how you do the winding of the paracord?
I got a cold Steel pipe hawk and trail hawk two weeks ago they both came unpainted but had that annoying sticker on them and I put a hair popping convex edge on them with my OG worksharp and dude I freaking love them money well spent
Excellent! They are great hawks and the Worksharp loves them!
Missed ya brother glad to see you . I got 1 too the eye on mine sucks never going to work with the stock handle bottom blade side has gap where tha handle is tear drop had to fill the sides up front
I love my cold steel Hawks and knives and expect to mod a new handle for this 1 as stock 1s will not fit properly
Thank you, bro! Yeah sometimes I slide in some wood shivs to fill the gaps on the wobbly heads, a short term but fast fix.
Hi: Thanks for the video, very informative. Question: How did you do the paracord wrap? Specifically how did you terminate both ends of the cord? It seems like a very good idea. Glue?
I use a pocket torch or butane lighter to melt the end of the paracord into it, and I also usually melt the last 2 or 3 coils of paracord to each other so they won't slide apart.
Convex mirror edge gives a yummy feel to this sweet tool.
Sure do! :]
This is an nice looking hawk and I want to damage a great quantity of firewood with it. Not sure about the dullness and the single screw in the head though. One thing I learned from this video is that I would like to thoroughly wrap myself in paracord, as an outfit. One thing I didn't learn is why I somehow got a UA-cam notification, not something I've ever gotten before, on my phone, that had you and your sharp objects prominently displayed! It is very good to see that you are out there, anyway.
Aye, that is odd! Was the notification in the form of text message? I didn't know UA-cam did such things, though Facebook does.
I've seen similar hawks referred to as light infantry axes. They were used extensively in the French and Indian War.
True, but the Hudson Bay Axe/Hawk, was designed by the Hudson Bay Fur Company, and they where given to the men who worked for them, as was the Hudson Bay Knife.
I’m all for customization and these are at a decent enough a price point that you can be adventurous and see what you can do. I do recommend getting an extra handle.
One of the big reasons to have a 'hawk is that you can easily make a handle for it.
Good stuff bro 👍👍💯
Thanks 💯 bro!
Cool review on a cool 'hawk. Thanks for sharing! BTW, checked all your Amazon links.... Not a single hawk anywhere near twenty bucks. Thanks again!
Yeah, basically September - Decemeber is when all the prices drop, Pipe Hawk was $18 a few weeks before Xmas :D it'll come back around.
@@WeAllJuggleKnives Figures... Just my luck... I've wanted a pipe hawk ever since they came out. I ALWAYS miss the good sales. Day late and a dollar short. Story of my Life. Hey man, while I got you on the horn, just wanted to say thanks for all the education/entertainment I've gotten from you over the years. You run a great channel and I really appreciate it. Thanks!
They need some work but I need them all lol.
Awesome review brother as usual.
👊💀👍🍻🇺🇲🍻
Aw yeah, I have no doubt you could put these hawks to good use!
@@WeAllJuggleKnives Most definitely brother.
👊💀👍
I love cold steel, great review and you got me buying matchetes and tomahawks as gifts for people haha. But how do you feel about estwing?
Excellent, yeah these make great and affordable gifts. Estwing Carpenters Hatchet is my favorite heavy hatchet!
@@WeAllJuggleKnives You should try the little Estwing Hatchet. That thing is awesome. Chops excellent, is light enough for a survival pack, swings a lot easier than the heavy standard Estwing Hatchet, and just like its bigger brother is a forged one piece unit so it's indestructable. I find myself using it more than even my Gransfors Wildlife Hatchet when in camp.
Got the crkt choganwoods. T hawk. Its a solid affair. Also seen it here. Keep up the good work.
Thanks, bro! Yeah the CRKT Woods hawks are a bit nicer, the heads are fit more tightly.
I agree! The chogan is a nicely balanced hawk
Very nice.
Cold Steel makes good Hawks, Knives & Swords good Mod & Review of that tool pal.
thanks, my friend!
Been looking at this one since they announced it. How does it throw compared to the pipe hawk or other hawks?
The heavier ones than this are a bit easier to throw, more momentum and slower rotation, they stick more easily. But I am sure that with practice this can stick.
A better splitter is the Cold Steel Rifleman's Hawk. I've heard it called the Magnum of the Cold Steel tomahawk line. I have one also. I will be getting the Hudson Bay hawk, to go with my Hudson bay knife that I got from Condor.
Oh yes, the Rifleman, still their heavy hitter. Many of the CS hawks are no longer available these days.
My favorite hawk is the Rifleman's hawk, and I really want to purchase it, but is it too heavy to be used as a tactical/combat weapon?
Yeah, heavy items can still be used, just swing from the elbow or shoulder instead of the wrist. Heavy hawks and hatchets will hit like a wrecking ball :]
Hahahahahaha Awesomenesssss.....There for a Minute I thought Norm McDonald was talking hahaaha
LOL glad you enjoyed the vid!
Please do a review on the weeping heart ❤️
I want to review it, but it's very pricey right now at around $60, but I have faith it will be more affordable in time and then I will pick one up.
Of all the hawks you have tested, which are your top 3? Thanks for all the great vids!
My favorites are the CRKT Chogan, Cold Steel Rifleman's Hawk, and Browning Shock and Awe Tomahawk.
@@WeAllJuggleKnives thanks for sharing, Sir! I don't own any of those, but it sounds like you prefer a heavy hawk.
@@theWZZA Yes indeed, they can be used as hatchets.
Ok the sharp stuff is cool and all, but what i want to know is what are you doing to get into the kind of shape you are in now, beast mode!
Thanks, bro! After a lot of research and experimentation, I have found the best thing to do is basically diet down to your goal weight. Then diet down an extra 15 pounds below that. Then regain those 15 pounds by eating more while lifting weights. Try to get most of your calories from healthy vegetables and protein, and set a maximum number of calories per day to fit your program.
Can you use a different handle for friction hold??
Yes, Cold Steel sells replacement handles, or you could carve or sand your own piece of wood to make it fit.
I'm like the bird. I like the hawk too.
What's handle diameter?
Hey man
I notice you use racquet grip tape on alot of your items.
Any advice on brands/types?
I use cloth hockey grip tape ATM but am looking for something more dirt resistant
I use the Slazenger or Wilson brands, they work great!
@@WeAllJuggleKnives
Thanks for replying.
I noticed in one of your videos you have a Hanwei military dadao.
But I can't find any reviews on your channel....
Have you done one I'm missing?
If not I would love to see a review I have one myself.
I have 4 Cold Steel Hawks, and I truly like them all. First, get rid if the set screw, and then sand and file down the head end of the handle till you get a good tight friction fit, as it should be. Because a hawk head is meant to come off, so you can replace the handle, or use the head off the handle. Finish on yours looks a bit funky, so when I get mine, and I will, I will remove the finish and blue the head using Birchwood Casey's Super Blue. Oh, to fill in the set screw hole. Take the head to a good hardware store, and find a machine screw that will thread into the hole. Brass would look really good. I use the Ken Onion Work Sharp, with Grinding attachment to sharpen all my edged tools.
Brother on another topic.
Whats your viewpoint on the sog pentagon. I know youve made a upload about it some years back do you know if the quality is still there? like steel still good. Good sheath that sort of thing
All daggers have a certain charm, but, don't buy it. Nothing especially wrong with it, but these days there are a huge number of other knives one could get to do any of its jobs. For fighting, the best knife is a thick and very pointed shank, no edge required, 3.5 - 5 inches in blade length.
@@WeAllJuggleKnives yeah i looked them up.. Last night. I didnt see really that they are very cool also it looks alot more junky than they used to be.. Another thing ive seen knife makers like winkler have made just crazy random shaped sharp slabs of steel
That are sub 100$ some are straws or spikes i like those kind better
Yup, Cold Steel hawks are all project pieces. Unfinished? A fair statement. I love Cold Steel products in general. But got to be honest, when I wanted a traditional pipe hawk, I bought the one that Condor Tool & Knife offers, instead of the Cold Steel version. Sure, it was $80 compared to the around $30 for the CS. But that extra $50 gets you a nicely made leather cover for the edge, plus a leather belt carrier for the hawk, along with an edge that is properly sharpened, with proper edge geometry right out of the box. Easily worth the extra money.
Have seriously looked into picking up a Cold Steel Trail hawk. But it would just be too much of a project. Re-profiling the edge, sharpening it, stripping the paint off the head. Then either cold bluing it, or giving it a vinegar and mustard patina for some rust resistance. Just too much. Have tried looking for individuals online willing to do the work for me, and just pay them for all of it. But with the exception of the Norse hawk, can't find anyone online customizing these.
Dude just fucking do it it's not a hard modification under 10 dollars.
It's funny I've been watching you for a long time. Because you actually show yourself using stuff.
Anyway the funny thing is no matter how many videos I've watched you seem to have already tested something I'm just hearing about.
I knew they had the Hudson Bay ax I didn't know anything about this tomahawk. I have the trailhawk an a regular hawk. I'm thinking this might be better then the little trailhawk. Do you think there is enough difference to own both. I mean it's only like $32 now. So what is your long term opinion now.
Oh yes, all their hawks offer high value per dollar, this will hit a bit harder than the Trail Hawk. I believe they have discontinued the Trailhawk and Frontier Hawk, which is a shame.
@@WeAllJuggleKnives wow didn't know that. Maybe I better get one just to be on safe side. GSM doesn't seem to be heading where I want to go. The new prices for 4034 steel are insane. I saw $200 for the small warcraft knife. I know it msrp. But really for subpar steel really below 420. It should be MSRP $80 then sell for $30. That would still be overpriced for that steel.
The sad thing is GSM guy "stickman" doesn't know anything about knives. So I wonder who is going to design for them. I don't see coldsteel lasting 3 years. That's my opinion. What's even worse is there is no alternative. Nobody is even close to coldsteel. Glade I have enough stuff to last me. I'm pretty sure you have a nice arms room. Lol any thanks always great to hear your opinion.
The grub screw is for transport, for safety.
I like it!
Thank for watching, broski!
@@WeAllJuggleKnives welcome bro
These are currently priced at $65.
I kinda want one but I paid $35 for the pipe hawk.
I just can’t decide if it’s worth the extra cost. I dunno
These were sold out for the longest time. I'm not sure if they are getting more, I hope they do, this is one of their most useful hawks. The Rifleman Hawk seems to be sold out, too. It is best to grab one of each of the Cold Steel Hawks just in case, never know is their new ownership will discontinue models.
Great review! Oh! And Bushcrafters are normal people too... LOL!!!
LOL be careful, normal people aren't very normal any more :D
Mmm looks cool be a fun project
For sure!
I make wooden stakes for my girlfriend Buffy all the time. Ahaha.
Drat. Now I have to get one, lol.
In your opinion, pipe hawk or Hudson hawk? Thanks in advance
The Hudson Hawk hits a little harder, so I think most people will find that more useful.
@@WeAllJuggleKnives thanks a lot for the answer, man. You are a reference here in axes …
I checked the link to the Pipe Hawk and it was $36.89 at 8PM on March 24th. The price must have went up between when he made the video and now.
Checking my records, on December 10, Pipe Hawk was $24.56. So it has gone up around 50% of it's December price. Fortunately, it will come back down. Assuming that Cold Steel is able to re-open and ship them in the future.
I prefer the spike. I can make a baton to hammer with.
The spikes can be pretty useful, I use mine to chip ice off the steps and driveway sometimes.
when is the real guy coming back this skinny dude has been standing in forever
Thanks, bro!
@@WeAllJuggleKnives stay safe stay healthy and stay frosty
He may be skinny but he identifies as fat so it's all good
Punji sticks!
Looks well, close to my ideal. Almost there. Lose the damned screw and finish the head properly. The purpose of hawk over hatchet is ease of replacing a handle in the woods. I don’t need a real hammer, just enough flat poll to drive the occasional stake. Want it light and fast to cut, but enough wedge shape to split. This could use a bit more. But it’s close, and not super expensive.
Отличный топор,хочу себе такой!
I would say that The crkt suffer from the same problem. The nobo i got didit have the best fhinnis and the age has not there but still there no talk about the handel over a cm free room and now it is
Get Rid of the Set screw. take the head of the hawk off the handle. Using a good wood rasp and sand paper, shape the handle until you get a good tight friction fit. Might take a bit of work, since the handle is made of hickory. Stay safe and keep that edge sharp.
I'm glad I got one of these, looks like they keep having supply problems or are possibly discontinued already.
@@WeAllJuggleKnives I actually got mine from Kult of Athena, and I'm glad I did, of the 4 Cold Steel hawks I have, the Trail Hawk, Norse Hawk and Rifleman's Hawk, the Hudson Bay Hawk, is just the right size for some real work in the woods, but I will still carry a small folding saw with me :)
bro, you lost a bit and got jacked!
I did! I'm doing the whole eat healthy thing now :]
wait its not already built
You gotta get rid of the screw. Having the head rattle around is annoying as hell.
no bird likes hawks. only hawks do xD I like the CS Hudson Bay and the low price in the USA. will be double that amount here...
I actually did get a little footage of two birds of prey that day. Looked to be the parent, and a nearly grown offspring.
@@WeAllJuggleKnives I am a happy camper^^ and could have footage like that everyday - we have many birds here, everything except eagles. living outside the city limits is just great for animal sightings. unfortunately my camera just doesn't cut it, and I always spend my money on other things... priorities :-)
Very tacticool
For sure :]
When you put paracord or tape on the handle of a tomahawk you lose part of its versatility to use the head alone as a multitool, also, it is recommended to store the handle and the head detached because humidity and temperature changes could expand or contract the handle.
I don't like spikes either, I'll kill myself. Ask my guardian angel, he never gets any rest. Lol. I'm between the frontier hawk and the Hudson bay. I like having a hammer, but the frontier looks lightweight and fast. but people, always say the hammerless/spikeless design throws off the balance for splitting, throwing, swinging, basically they say its shit. what do you like between Hudson and the Frontier??? do you think the frontier is so off-balanced to worry about?? do you think the hudson is so much heavier than the frontier as to skip the hammer design. HELP, knife-aholic in distress!! Lol.
I think you should get the Frontier Hawk, it sounds like light and fast would be most useful to you, and you can always swing it with two hands if extra force is needed.
I think that is the most generic, nothing special, just an axe, tomahawk in the entire line of CS tomahawks
Yeah, it is definitely not the nicest looking, but it is practical.
It has fascinated me for years to watch UA-cam reviews of axes and tomahawks and observe how comically unskilled most people are with these tools. Swinging the axe with only one hand when you have two perfectly good hands. Wearing thick work gloves that ruin your grip and dexterity. Putting a shitty obtuse grind on the edge with a miniature novelty belt sander instead of using a file. Every single blow you land twisting and and practically bouncing off of the log. The axe and it's use completely eludes you.
I think you are exaggerating. Gloves do not "ruin" dexterity. Swinging a hawk with one hand is not the equivalent of murdering a baby LOL. The Work Sharp is fine for most people. The fact is, videos on UA-cam, and items like this fairly cheap hawk, are not geared towards experts. Once you realize that, you can enjoy them for what they are. Have a good one.
All cold steel hawks are project hawks. The edges that they come with are trash.
Thanks for your review BUT PLEASE COMING FROM AN EUROPEAN
please stay at home get out only once per day don t shake hand stay away from people
