Mr. Chapman, I would absolutely love to go out west and hunt jack rabbits with a springer. There is so much info out there. Could you point me in the right direction so I could take my boys and have a pretty good chance of success. I live in Florida and have only seen jacks on TV / youtube, but hunting them is on my bucket list. John in PA has tuned 5 of my springers so I've got the goods. May take PCPs one day, but want to go with springers more than anything. Love your rabbit hunting videos (especially with springers) Thank you..
Hello! I do a lot of my jackrabbit hunting in Texas, and even though there are thousands of square miles of open land, it is almost all privately owned and Texans take a very dim view of trespassing. This leaves you with a couple option, pay for a hog, dove, or javalina hunt somewhere and they'll usually let you do jackrabbits and predators on the side. The other is to keep on driving west into NM, AZ, CA, UT, NV where there are vast tracks of BLM and National Forest lands where you can hunt. I drive dirt roads at night looking for jacks while their out an active to pin down where they live, then go back at dusk and dawn to to spot and stalk them. For short hunts the best bet of success is to follow the first option, the local land owners and guides can tell you exactly where the jacks are, and chances are the hunting pressure is low.
I bought the Flashpup Synthetic .25 a few months ago as my first pcp. I got my first kill a week ago on a groundhog. With a headshot the animal dropped instantly. I really like the rifle, but if i could do it again id go with the original Flash, Vectis or Invader. It's hard for me to hold the flashpup still when shooting off hand because of the lack of weight on the front of the gun. I even added the Hatsan forgrip/bipod to see if it would help. Shot great off the bipod but its still not great off hand. Is there any affordable shooting sticks you would recommend?
The bipods, shooting sticks actually, I use more than any other these days are the Primos Polecats. Very simple, fast to deploy, and I find them very flexible for different field situations. For something a bit more substantial I like the BOG Adrenaline Series Switcheroo Bipod.... but in the field I go with the Polecats more than anything else.
They used them for working cattle in the past, but switched over to ATVs several years ago. Those horses were retired and left to live out their time on the ranch........ I think they want somebody to throw a saddle on them and go for a run!
You are correct, a 15 gr pellet at 900 fps is the same regardless of power plant. The advantage of a PCP in smaller caliber guns, no recoil, intrinsically accurate and easier to shoot accurately, many have multi-shot magazines, with a moderator they can be very quiet, the are smaller and more compact (in general), and if you are shooting larger caliber (.25-.35) pellets they operate more efficiently and generate more power. Watch out on velocity has a bench mark, most manufacturers use ultralight pellets to exaggerate their high velocity specs, and these pellets suck at longer range, the terminal performance sucks, and the accuracy, you guessed it, sucks. If you are looking at velocity, look at those numbers achieved with heavier lead pellets, and even better look at FPE.
Hello Sir. Firstly I want to say that your video is amazing but I got something on my mind. When we are hunting in Turkey most of us don’t shoot animals which stand still, and when we did we would be shamed by other hunters. Do you have this habit in US?

Great video as always I’m wondering how do you cook the cottontails? Whenever I’ve cooked them the meat is almost always chewy and tough, and what do you do with the jack rabbits?
I'm not much of a chef, but in my opinion the younger/smaller animals are better table fare. The easiest ways are to either make a hasenpfeffer, chili or other stew, or braise them. We generally soak them in brine for several hours first, then a shorter soak in buttermilk, and this helps to tenderize them.
We had snowshoe a few weeks ago, I had some luck with them this year in WI, in my limited experience they were much better than JR. Young jackrabbits are OK as a protein ingredient in tamales, chili or stew, the older ones not so much.
I have eaten several jackrabbits and I find if you put them in a pressure cooker and tenderize them, let cool, dry, flour seasoning, and fry in a cast-iron skillet. serve with homemade biscuits and gravy is GOOD EATS. throw in a couple of Mexican quail breasts and you are in hog heaven. I miss living in the SW. I don't Florida going back home to tombstone, az
When I go down to Texas, I usually go for a week and take several guns for several different hunts. When I'm down there, it's either hog, deer, javalina turkey, or often predator hunting along with rabbits.
Hi Scott, yes and no. The ranch does exotic and whitetail hunts that cost from a few thousand to several thousand dollars and uses the lodge/bunkhouse for those hunters. Even then they only do a limited number of hunts, mostly for corporate clients. The owner is a close friend of a close friend that lets us hunt and film on the property. The best way to get a place to rabbit hunt in Texas is find a less expensive hog hunt or predator hunt, and the outfitters/land owners will often let you small game hunt during down time.

Hi Victor, not many hunters are willing to "burn" their spots by publicizing them, but I will tell you that if you go back into the high desert along the dirt roads into the San Bernardino Mountains, you can find some good jackrabbit and cottontail hunting. At least you could in the past, though I haven't been there in a few years. I grew up in So Cal and used to go back there to hunt a lot. It's BLM and state forest so I wouldn't think its changed too much. To be honest and to set reasonable expectations, it would be hard to find a place like I was huntingin this video. This is a huge private ranch, that is generally not open to the public. But you can still find good jackrabbit hunting in Cali.

@@victorcarrillo6267 Victor, that's great to hear! That area I mentioned to you is also good for quail hunting, which you can do with an air rifle in California. That can be a lot of fun, and quail is better to eat than jackrabbit as a bonus!

There are a few around :). I am the only one that hunts them on this ranch, so doing a few trips per year I don't have too much impact on population. I think the coyotes, fox, and bob cats prefer cottontails, they're easier to catch.
Thanks, but I disagree on Hatsan. I have several of their guns, and have hunted with them a lot since I picked up my first Pneuma several yeas ago, taking everything from doves to deer. My only two consistent criticisms have been that the early guns were very loud, and they tend to be quite heavy. They are built to a good workmanlike production quality, not the highest finish standard, but solid field guns. I've had a couple mechanical issues, that were specific to an individual gun, but I can say that for just about every brand I've used (all of them). But the last item I'll mention is pricing; you get a lot of gun for the price you pay. This particular rifle, the Vectis, is a great example, accurate, powerful, consistent, reliable, a unique and very cool action, for $360.00, and it is one I shoot very well, as has just about everyone I've let take it for a spin. But everyone doesn't have to agree

The best way to get a place to rabbit hunt in Texas is find a less expensive hog hunt or predator hunt, and the outfitters/land owners will often let you small game hunt during down time.
Hope you had a nice rabbit stew.
Do you eat the jack rabbits as well or is it only the cottontail?
The young ones are processed and used, the older ones go to the predators and scavengers. Between those two, there is nothing left after a few hours.
@@americanairgunhunter ok. I was curious. Would love to see a catch and cook video one of these days from you. Great video. Always excited to get notifications of posted videos from your channel.
@@jaredcattouse7174 Thanks Jared. We were going to a kill and grill on this last trip, but after hunting javalina and rabbits all day and predators all night, were to wiped out! Will get one done eventually.
Are jack rabbits any good to eat? I sure do like shooting cotton tail rabbits and eating them.
What brand and power of scope on hatson? Thanks
Hi Logan, its a Leapers Acushot 2-12x44 Compact Sniper Scope. Reasonable price good otical quality, tough as nails!
Hello everyone I love the video would love to find a great spot like this I live near riverside ca bout 20 minutes I own an fx Impact x with upgrades and edgun leshi And totally addicted to air gunning but hard to find good place to hunt these days any one know of any great spots like this would be really appreciated
@@americanairgunhunter thank you very much I appreciate the response
@@americanairgunhunter I got into air gunning a few years ago did some research and found myself at top gun air with Joe brancato he gave us the rundown on what PCP rifles are made the purchase and fell in love been addicted ever since just getting harder to find spots due to development been trying to look up forums are places I can get more info on places I'm able to safely shoot my FX impact. I stopped drinking cold turkey working on my 5th Year sober air gun has been my outlet for me and my cousin who also stop drinking thank you for the information I love your videos and I'm looking into the air gunning safaris to do an overnight with me and my cousin maybe his kids who got into air gunning also so much fun thank you very much once again
@@victorcarrillo6267 Victor, that's great to hear! That area I mentioned to you is also good for quail hunting, which you can do with an air rifle in California. That can be a lot of fun, and quail is better to eat than jackrabbit as a bonus!
Great video, You got to start a cooking videos after all those rabbit hunting... One question do you use the fur?
Hello Elvin, will do something at some point. No, the fur gets ripped off when dressing the rabbits. For squirrels though, I keep the tails for fly tying.
Wasted about $280 in fur and $90, or 3 meals for 2 people.
Nice job bud!
I need another airgun like I need another hole in my head. so I am going to search this little baby out and maybe bring her home. I love levers.
Well worth a look..... and you can’t really ever have too many Airguns!
@@americanairgunhunter I took your advice and purchased the Vectis in .22 from amazon. as I needed a .22 for my .22 slugs. I was torn between .22 and .25, but I opted instead to buy the Atamam M2 ultra-carbine in .25 along with the Vectis. you said I really couldn't have too many airguns. now I need a couple of air bows. this is on you. lol
You have a lot of rabbits there
There are a few around :). I am the only one that hunts them on this ranch, so doing a few trips per year I don't have too much impact on population. I think the coyotes, fox, and bob cats prefer cottontails, they're easier to catch.
Sounds great.
I spend a whole night in the field looking for them, and most of the times return empty hand
As soon as the rifle when on the floor I’m out of here

Love your channel Jim . But Hatsan is crap. Cheers Dean
Your dressing the rabbits is not good
What distance did yoi sight your scope in on,please?
Hi Walter, this was a while back so I don't remember exactly, but with a .25 cal for small game in this type terrain, I normally sight in at 50 yards.
