I adore their recording of this on Sony so I'm glad to have the opportunity to watch this 'live' account. Jessye is as always beautiful and these songs really suit her.

Berg was such a free composer! He reminds me of Shakespeare, who wrote the most beautiful sentence in English, I think (not my language, my language is Dutch): We are such stuff as dreams are made on, and our little life is rounded with a sleep...

Norman was approaching the end of her career at this point.

As good as the performances of the 7 Early Songs and Altenberglieder with Boulez and Miss Norman are, you owe it to yourself to seek out Boulez's first Columbia (CBS) recordings of both sets, the 7 Early Songs with Heather Harper and the Altenberg Songs with Halina Łukomska. They're really unbelievably good, and Boulez is a little more fresh in his approach.

I have these on vinyl, and you have inspired me to go dig them out. My memory matches your description.

The "holdiing back" in DIE NACHTIGALL is sort of perplexing... as is her somewhat wayward intonation in THIS song.

Is it the orchestra's or the conductor's fault for not being able to capture the moon-behind-the-mist, clouded quality of sound right off the bat?
