There were several young refugees from Hungary at my school in England in 1957-58. One popular one, wearing the beret that once in fashion, was called Laszlo: his face pops up in two school photos from the day, some 63/4 years ago, lost in time. Maybe he survived to go back home in the '90s, if he'd wanted to by then.
I was born in that year. My parents had the chance to leave the country but they didn't do it because of me....? Well, i did it on my own later on. Seeing this horrible event i'm surprised they refused to leave for a more peaceful land. I cannot even imagine how scary must have been to live there at the time 😥
As a hungarian I know a few things about these days on a "must-to-know" basis although I was born a few decades later. Here are some facts: - on these pictures you can see russian IS-3 (heavy) tanks and ISU-152 tank destroyers in a destroyed condition, both of these tank-types was the cutting edge of the russian armored weapon of arms and in spite of the fact that ISU wasn't the newest tank-destroyer type of those days it was the tank-destroyer that has been deployed in the largest numbers in the surrounding countries and packed a huge punch on the battlefield. The fact that we can see photos of these types destroyed or knocked out of fight (abandoned) draws a good picture to the outsiders how fierce the fights could be. - one of the most grotesque occurence after the fall of the '56 revolution was that russian occupiers set up full departaments (including a workforce of "law enforcement" counting several thousands of people all around the country) with the sole purpose of analysing these pictures (including russian info acquired through different sources, even Pathe itself) and finding, interrogating and convicting (and in certain cases executing) people who have been appeared on these photos/pictures even only for a split second. - the last freedom-fighters of '56 have been released in the late '60-s - although the 1956 Revoution started at Budapest it wasn't limited to it, movements were born all around the country (mostly in county-centers) but most of these demonstrations have been silenced among the harshest conditions and with the bloodiest tools in some cases (such as Air Force MiG shooting into the demonstrating crowd for example) - there is a very small minority (mostly of old age) in Hungary who still calls the 1956 Hungarian Revolution as an "anti-revolution" (counter-revolution) act - they are hard-line communists who wouldn't give up their ideology, not even decades after the regime change. The reason of that is based on the communist doctrines which says that the communist revolution started in 1917 and its a process which will never stop until the whole world knows communism and until all countries will be converted to communist system. So they think the hungarian revolution was against the russian revolution. As a result of that the hungarian penal code in the law system of Hungary is recognizing that anyone who is calling the 1956 Revolution a "counter-revolution" is committing a crime and even in these days there are prosecutions in cases in connection with this issue, however as the time passes its getting harder and harder to find people having these thoughts and ideology.
And yet, after all this. After having tried to break away from the Soviets, from the Russians, who have put you down with the most bloodiest of ways, these days you are allowing yourself to be a Russian puppet and a Russian Trojan horse in the face of the Ukraine War.. Such sadomasochism. Take it from us, Lithuanians, who know Russians better than anybody - they never change. They are only WORSE now.

The "west" specializes now in changing the sex of our innocent children and spreading woke politics that make no sense to the majority. Our government doesn't speak foe the majority of us.
Well there was no tactical solution whatsoever. To the north of Hungary was the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic, a Soviet state. To the East was the Ukrainian SSR, a Soviet State and the Socialist Republic of Romania, also a Soviet satellite state. And to the south was Yugoslavia, a communist state. The only way NATO would've come to rescue the Hungarians was through Austria in the west, but Austria was an enforced neutral country since 1955 and would not allow any western forces through their borders. And even if the West violated Austria's neutrality, they'd be encircled by potential enemies on all sides. On top of that was the threat of Cold War escalation and nukes. Even at a glance, there never would've been a chance for the West to help the Hungarians, and the USSR knew that. That's why they invaded without hesitation.
The west was unable to help. There was no way into hungary. You brainwashed hungarians should get off of your high horses. Shameful display of thinking from our hungarian brothers.

This was one of the most Textbook cases of why you never send armor in without infantry to bback it up. The conflict started after a Soviet government official was publicly executed by a mob of civilians in the middle of Budapest. When this made it back to Russia Soviet armor was sent in, But the people of Budapest had expected such to happen. Spotters were ready to send the information the information to the people of Budapest via telephone lines as the armored brigade began to enter the city. * Keep in mind many of the people at this time were around or had fallen World War II And we're still verse in how to fight against armed vehicles* Upon hearing that the Soviet government was sending in there new T52 tanks the, The people of Budapest gathered up pots and pans and and paint them to look like tank mines. The minds were then laid down across streets that were wider as were wider as well as on the telephone lines of streets that also were much wider. From the inside of a tank It would have been hard to discern a mine from a painted pot but at the same time when it's your life you're playing with that's not a risk you often want to take. The Tanks were then lured into Smaller streets where they wouldn't be able to turn around, where the people would be able to ambush them. Then the civilians would attack the 1st tank in the line and the last tank in the line preventing them from being able to escape wall Molotov cocktails were being dropped on them.
This is very accurate. My father fled in November of '56 when he was almost 8 years old. My papa, his grandfather was a soldier studying to be a chemist. He was helping the resistance make nitro glycerin for the molotov cocktails. My father has told me stories about how the people would sneak up behind the tanks and throw the cocktails through the little slits in the turrets. What a way to go! Thanks for your comment.
Obviously you have no clue what you are talking about....First of all, there was infantry with the tanks (4-5 soldiers to every tank as an average). Second, the reason the rebels were successful because they were fighting in narrow streets in a huge city. More infantry would have been even a bigger disaster. Just a reminder that it wasn't the hungarian army that fought (it remained neutral but sometimes even attacked the rebels). Just a bunch of kids with molotovs and guns. They attacked then disappeared. They could shoot from every window and roof. These battles were closer to guerilla fightings than to battles like in ww2. It started with the killing of a soviet guy? You are either an idiot or you forgot that the sovietunion collapsed 3 decades ago and you don't have to spread soviet propaganda anymore....
Hungarian people were crushed by Russian boot because USA encouraged them & promised to help, but NO HELP came. Don't let this happen to Ukraine! SLAVA UKRAINI

New life from blood will always arise.
Quite a few times and even some more,
Child met donkey and shepherd before,
If by the manger, on littered earth,
One life had given another birth,
‘Tis they who’ll mind that wonder and will
Stand with breath bated as sentry still,

That was the last time we Hungarians believed the promises of the "free" West.

That was also the last time they attempted to be free. 😢

And after 1956 then finally in 1991 the red army left our country once and for all. "Товарищи, Конец!"

* Keep in mind many of the people at this time were around or had fallen World War II And we're still verse in how to fight against armed vehicles*
Upon hearing that the Soviet government was sending in there new T52 tanks the, The people of Budapest gathered up pots and pans and and paint them to look like tank mines.
Then the civilians would attack the 1st tank in the line and the last tank in the line preventing them from being able to escape wall Molotov cocktails were being dropped on them.
but despite pleas for help, no one came to aid the Hungarians, and while the fighting was fierce and noble, the Russians prevailed.
