    Hi, I'm back! Forgive me, I've been off-air for a bit as I've been under the weather but I'm playing catch up now! I think the Xperia 1 III has acquitted itself very well here against the S21 Ultra, including in the camera department. What do you think? Cheers, Tom

      @James Agg - I think it's become very safe ground for tech UA-camrs to praise Samsung and equally safe for them to knock Sony. It's actually been quite rare for a tech reviewer to say these new Xperias are as good as they actually are... Things may change and I hope they do. I am the meantime I'll do what I can to get the truth out there! Cheers, Tom 🙏

    It still amazes me how other "reviewers" complain about the 21:9 screen yet they never, ever complain about other flagship phones that sit at 20:9 or 20.5:9. It's actually pretty laughable really.
    People who buy Samsung or Apple buy them more due to the marketing budgets those 2 have as opposed to whether the phone is actually something that fits their needs. In some ways it's a trust thing. If Sony put in a heavy marketing budget they'd sell far more phones. Especially if they fixed their stupid announcement/release date gap. It's my biggest gripe with Sony as they don't take advantage of any hype they may build up as the phone is almost forgotten by the time it launches.

      I agree with you on all counts there. The next Xperia launch NEEDS to be done properly. And I have a few ideas on how Sony can improve matters with the next Xperia range which I'll share in a video very soon - and would love to hear ideas from folks such as yourself in the community here. Cheers, Tom 🙏

      You are 100% right that SONY needs to fix this issue with the launch dates being so out of whack with actual availability. It's definitely costing them sales. However regarding the issue about advertising......and you are again right that their MASSIVE advertising budgets are a big part of how they sell so many phones...and while I would love for SONY to sell more Xperias I don't think there is much point in SONY pouring billions of USD into advertising smartphones at this late stage of the game.
      Tech products have at most a 20 year lifespan (for example portable tape cassettes ....Walkmans" were around about 20 years before being replaced by MP3 players), and smartphones are pretty much now in the final phase of their lifespan. You can see it in how generally flat smartphone sales have been for a while now. There is no longer any growth. And the tech companies know it. It's why Apple is investing billions into trying to develop augmented reality glasses. Because they need the next hot must have tech item to drive sales, and more importantly their stock price. Smartphones as a product are now such a commodity, long in the tooth, and the market is so saturated that they no longer drive growth.
      So if you dive into SONY's corporate reports, and dig into what they are doing you will notice stuff like the development of the Vision S electric ⚡ car 🚗 as well as an interior platform and eco system for EVs, A I, robots (SONY is developing a robot chef), and also augmented reality glasses. Basically you can see that SONY is allocating their money and resources towards the future tech that is on the horizon now with the clear goal of them wanting to catch the next big tech wave (EVs for sure). And from a strategic point of view this is the smart and right thing for SONY to be doing instead of pouring billions (because that's what it would take....Apple and Samsung spend way north of 11-12 billion USD on marketing annually) into a product that is now in its final phase. Unfortunately the smartphone battle was lost years ago with poor decisions and the wrong product. So there's no point in SONY focusing on that now. There are literally bigger fish to fry.
      *As to why SONY has kept Xperia going it's to keep the technology, know how, patents, and engineering talent. For example, the 5G, and wireless connected capabilities, and the lip reading software for calls and voice commands inside the car of the Vision S was all done by the Xperia team. So they keep Xperia going because it has value for their future plans. SONY is playing the long game here....

    Got both... Love both
    The Samsung all in all definitely gives you a bigger "WOW" effect but the Sony... I'm sure as an Xperia user/Sony fan you'll always stick with it. The overall experience when using these phones is just more "natural" on the Sony. BTW absolutely love how realistic shots look on the Sony... There seems to be no difference between what the screen shows and you can see with the naked eye...

I was out using the photo pro app the other night and bumped into another Sony fan who (unlike me) is a serious professional photographer! So we agreed to collaborate on a video, which we filmed last night. These kinds of encounters happen when you have a phone like the 1 III and you get out and use that pro mode! You meet like-minded people and it becomes addictive. Suddenly point and shoot devices, no matter how clever the AI etc, just don't give anything like this kind of experience! Cheers, Tom 🙏

    It's great to hear you're back, Tom! I still think that the reason why Sony keeps using a mediocre front camera (since Xperia 1) from Samsung and not their own Exmor sensor like previous Xperia smartphones (i.e Xperia XZ3), is because of the thin bezels. A bigger sensor just can't fit in that thin bezel. Sony doesn't want to go with notch or punch hole solution for the sake of respecting the content, and for me I really like that approach. I am curious what Sony's next move to use a better front camera on its future flagship smartphones. It becomes the main issue with current Sony Xperia flagship smartphones even though it is not a big deal and people can always use the rear cameras to shoot selfies using Xperia's dedicated shutter button.

      r u sure 😂 then how can Samsung have a high quality front camera while in that thin punch hole setup on the other hand sony with the 2018 bezels can't have a front camera that can beat even the midrange devices of Samsung it is such a ripoff specially when you are paying 1400 dollars thumbs down for this device.

    • @pixelshaderx
      @pixelshaderx 3 роки тому +1

      @@vishuvajpal2500 You probably have no idea that's the exact very reason why Samsung had to sacrifice a hole on the display to put a bigger sensor front camera without having to increase the bezels size. The camera you see from the outside is just the lense and the sensor is actually bigger than that. Even Samsung had to use a darker aperture (f2.2)to make the cutout small as much as possible. For instance, check Note 10+ teardown to have a clear idea about what's going on. Also, Samsung knows hole punch isn't an ideal solution and it is trying to find a different one. It's currently trying the under display camera solution on its other devices and they will definitely start using it on its flagship device when it gets better.

For example, in the video section where you recorded the London street view you neglected to mention how the Sony completely blows out street lights and shop lights and makes the rest of the image look grey, whereas on the Samsung the highlights are toned down and isn't lens flare city like with the Sony.
    Also I bought the Xperia 1 ii about a month ago and have been daily driving it since and tbh, I'm not that impressed with some of the daily driving features that aren't there on the Sony but were present on my previous Samsung Note 8, but yet NOBODY is talking about them. Things like the vibration strength and lack of adjustability for the vibration strength or the fact you can't adjust the torch brightness on the Sony compared to the Samsung and I really want to know how the 1 iii compares in these areas. Glad you brought up the brightness issue, that was another one of my quality of life issues with the Sony too.
    Still though I would love to see more quality of life talking points on phones rather than just the specs - things like the fingerprint reader (Sony's FR is waay too senstive and often I pull out my phone from my pocket and already fingerprints have been disabled due to too many attempts), gesture implementation and adjustability, volume/clarity/adjustability of audio when listening through earphones, adjustability of the Always On Display (The AOD on the Sony has adaptive brightness which you can't turn off and is always rediculously bright at night), the fact that you can't always crop/zoom on certain apps to fill the 21:9 ratio when viewing 16:9 content (for example Funimation and Crunchyroll). I just really want to know whether these things have changed from the 1 ii to the 1 iii.

    Been using the Xperia 1 III for a week now. Love this phone so far but there's a few things that bothers me. This is coming from me who had been using the Honor View 20 since launch about 2 years+.
    1. Heat due to the Snapdragon 888 chipset

    Glad to see you back making vidoes. Hopefully we can look forward to a lot more soon. As well as hopefully some reviews of a more diverse range of SONY products. I also wanted to ask if you have considered doing a SONY podcast Tom? Seems like it could be a great way to expand the channel and get some more long form discussion on various topics as well as interesting guests. I recently saw a very cool series of podcasts where some running channels were invited to Asics headquarters to do sit down talks with some of the key people at the company as well as they took online questions from people (they streamed the talks live). I thought what a great format, and how incredible it would be if you could get key SONY personal to sit down for these types of talks?

    Nice video. I currently own the xperia 1 ii for a while now. But finding it hard to upgrade to the 1 iii because of the mediocre auto modes in the camera. I currently own the S21 ultra & I'm completely impressed with the phone overall. I used it as my camera at My cousins wedding & it definitely outdid every other phone camera at the wedding to the point where my cousin only asked for the photos & vidoes from my S21 ultra after the wedding. You'd never get that excellent point & shoot response & results from the 1 iii. & At that wedding, alot of the shots required quick point & shoot photos, no time to switch to manual & dialing settings. I think I'll skip the 1iii & wait for the 1 iv. I know it's a good phone overall with some unique features, that 4k HDR display, the stereo sound etc.... But I'm just enjoying the S21 ultra.

I'm on the 1 II right now (all loaner devices for this year have gone back to Sony *sigh*) and I decided to wait it out too. Cheers, Tom 🙏

    Jumped the gun and bought the purple one. Loving it so far. Just two issues for me.
    1) The selfie camera is not great - usable, but not great. You are absolutely right when you say that at this price point, it is a disappointment.
    2) The phone gets ridiculously hot! Although, with the new update and a rugged spigen case, it is okay now.
    Other than these two, it is a fantastic device to hold and use. The basic camera is rubbish, but on auto, it's good. So even if you are not familiar with the camera, you can just leave it on auto. It is weird that the camera moves back to basic mode when you leave and go back though.
    The screen is superb. Personally, I have not had an issue outdoors, but then again, the weather here in London is gloomy with spots of sunshine.
    Oh, and the location of the fingerprint scanner/power button is a bit annoying as I grip it when I place the phone in my pocket - so sometimes it unlocks the phone.
    Tldr fantastic phone.
    Ps. Hope you get well soon and return to the rooftop!

    Ah, great review! One of the few that I'd actually call a review, you simply explained the differences and presented the facts, with some tasteful personal opinions sprinkled in, as it should be!
    I've gone crazy looking at the reviews of these two phones. 95 percent of all techtubers CLEARLY prefer the s21 because of its mass appeal, and while they're not necessarily wrong, I just hate how they are so obviously biased. The features the Sony represents used to cater to enthusiasts, and letting other brands getting away with removing many features many of us came to love, is just biased and wrong. It should still be mentioned, even if you sound like a broken record.
    This all being said, I went with the ultra, just placed an order. It just ticked a few boxes that I personally prefer, but I'd be happy with either phone. The Sony represents a dying breed of phone. Next time, ill probably go Sony if they keep this up!
    Subscribed, very nice review, gives me hope for techtubers. Keep up the good work!

    I got my Xperia 1 III a couple days ago and it has generally been a great experience so far. Only real issue I've had is the fingerprint sensor isn't as consistent as I was hoping for. The Xperia's sensor is a bit smaller (at least width-wise) so I have more failed attempts than my previous phone which had a circular sensor.
    edit: 3 years support? I swear I heard it was only 1 year somewhere. if that is true I am pleasantly surprised haha

    • @clavierpixelkey650
      @clavierpixelkey650 3 роки тому

      I think maybe you should try this : when registering your fingerprint, touch the sensor with your finger in different positions - sometimes awkward ones - until it reaches 100%. I do that with my Galaxy S9 and a Galaxy A42 5G and I believe this gives more « variety » for the software to recognise and so the accuracy is better.

    • @yustwastaken
      @yustwastaken 3 роки тому

      @@clavierpixelkey650 thanks for the suggestion. I've registered them multiple times and that worked fine for my last phone. I am just going to have to register it multiple times until I get the right set of registrations. unfortunately I don't see an option to build on top of the already-scanned fingerprints, you have to delete the old fingerprint and re-scan if you want the fingerprint improved.

    Hi Tom! Sorry if my question sounds daft as you've probably explained it all. I've watched both this and the 1 II vs. I III video as I'm considering between all three (1 II, 1 III, and S21 Ultra), and I still can't make up my mind. I'm thinking of the 1 II because of the price, the 1 III because it's the newest, and the S21 Ultra because it's a balance of price and how new it is. So, between the three, which would you ultimately choose?

    • @tech_edit

      @@tech_edit Thank you for the reply Tom! I have an iPhone 12 Pro Max as my main phone currently, which works great, but I've been looking to add a second, camera-focused smartphone for three reasons;
      1.) To replace my Canon DSLR when on holidays (I'm not as active taking photos now as I was when I first got it, and lugging the DSLR around + all the equipment I have is pretty cumbersome).
      2.) To do some vlogging.
      3.) And also as an additional video camera for the car videos I make (I already have a Sony RX100M2 for this).
      I do have a soft spot for Sony phones as my first ever smartphone was a Sony Ericsson P1i, my first Android device was a Sony Xperia T, and I briefly had an XZ Premium towards the end of 2017. That's why I'm leaning towards either one of the Sony pair but I've also added the Samsung in for a bit of a comparison so to speak. With your recommendation, I might very well settle for the 1 II and enjoy a Sony phone once again!
      The deal I found on Sony Malaysia's website is RM4,199 (£727.17) for the 1 II, which includes a free screen protector, a case, a "Sony Store Premium Set" (whatever that means), an RM200 (£34.64) JD Sports gift card, and an RM300 (£51.95) Touch 'n Go card (this is for toll roads/parking/e-wallet in Malaysia). The only downside here is that the only colour available is white.

The screen is definitely brighter. The speakers are louder, clearer and more bass. The cameras are fantastic, take great pictures and so clear and crisp. The only gripe I have is the manual control isn't as manual as the Xperia 1. You can't change the ISO, shutter speed and exposure all together, I find each mode only lets you change 2 out of the 3. a great comparison, I've had my eyes on the sony 1 mark 3 for a while now and have been waiting for UK release. but now I am in two minds between the sony and the pixel 6 pro when that releases, would you consider comparing the 1 mark 3 vs the Pixel 6 pro in a future video ? many thank and keep up the honest reviews.

      Heya Richard - if I can persuade someone to loan me a 6 or 6 Pro, I'll definitely do a comparison! That's gonna be a tough choice for a lot of folks here I would say. I've always liked Pixel phones, personally. Cheers, Tom 🙏

    I really wanted this phone, but a few reasons why I didn't are 1) the screen in bright sunlight makes the phone difficult to use 2) I've heard that the actual call quality is hit and miss 3) The battery life... For everything else, I would take the Sony, especially for the headphone jack & expandable storage, but the three reasons I mentioned before are deal-breakers I'm sad to say

    • @tech_edit
      @tech_edit  3 роки тому

      Screen brightness is a thing, but battery life is still a day, no worries for me. And re call quality, it's actually better than my 1 II, which I never noticed or thought about! Maybe the US UA-camrs who complained about that had pre-production software? Cheers, Tom 🙏

    Welcome back, Tom. This is a fair comparison, and I hope you make more detailed comparison videos and also try to include the iPhone 12 pro max if you can.
    I actually preordered the mark III and waiting for its arrival on an unknown date as it's backordered :(.
    However, I gotta say, this is truly an embarrassing marketing strategy. The phone got announced in April, was available in Russia and China in June I think, preorder for the rest of the world began in July, Europe received it in August, most of North America got postponed till September and October. I mean, what is this??
    They are killing the hype, removing catchy videos that were working like magnets pulling potential buyers like the "prelude announcement", not addressing, explaining, or apologizing for the obvious chaos "the delay" to show respect to their loyal fans and buyers...
    I really hope this stops starting from the next generation.

    i got mine! so far loving it. i do need to learn on how to properly use the cinema pro, do love the camera pro for taking picture. im far from a pro photographer however like the control i have on the settings and how natural the pics came out. the biggest feature i really missed from my old samsung phone is Samsung Pay, for years all i need when i go out is my ID and my phone. had to go back doing shopping the old way. lol. sadly here in malaysia, google play is not available..

      Wow, I didn't know Google Pay wasn't available in Malaysia. That's a surprise. Is it scheduled to arrive there I wonder? I'm intrigued now.. but yes, you can watch alpha/mirrorless camera tutorials and apply that knowledge to your 1 III, and before you know it you'll be hooked. It's a great feeling to create something amazing using the pro apps. Especially when you shoot raw and edit to perfection in post! Enjoy! Cheers, Tom 🙏

    Hi Tom, Fantastic comparison between the 2 phones. I took the gamble and changed my S21U for the Xperia 1iii. I must be totally honest, I don't regret changing. Many people would think I am crazy changing. The reason why I think the Xperia wins, when you are taking a picture when using the Xperia, the pictures look more true to life, with the Samsung S21U the pictures seem to be over saturated. Also, with the Xperia, it comes with expandable memory, headphone jack, true front facing stereo speakers, and a 30 watt changing brick out of the box. I personally think Samsung wins in their camera 100 X zoom technology, but, I don't think everyone takes pictures of the moon every day. You can truly say that the camera never lies on the Xperia 1iii.

      Best comment David - thanks so much for adding that. It's great to hear from folks such as yourself who have taken the leap from an S21 Ultra. First and foremost I'm thrilled to hear you are happy with your decision. For what it's worth I think your reasoning is spot on - o completely agree. And although the S21 Ultra is a tour de force - the subtle magic of the Xperia nails it for me too! Cheers, Tom 🙏

    Hello, Sony
    I have some suggestion, 5 points
    1. SONY must have a morning recognition feature when it meets light
    2. you have to improve your selfie camera (rom xperia xz2 until xperia 1 iii)
    3. change adapter, your adapter is very slow, please improve
    4. Screen brightness is not bright and clear when outdoors, please improve
    5. music audio and video audio is not loud, please improve
    Please improve 'all above'

I didn't realise, but both Jagger and Bowie were on there I think. So you were right and I was wrong! Anyway, I've been meaning to say that for ages! I'm going back to my 1 II from tomorrow onwards and although it's definitely a downgrade from the loaner 1 III, it's not too much of a downgrade fortunately. Can't afford a yearly upgrade, but I'll certainly be laying close attention to the 1 IV rumours! Yeah it's going to have to be a 4K FF camera next time around! Cheers, Tom 🙏

    Hi Tom, for me, Samsung is respectable and could really rival iPhone. What I hate about Samsung is their dissing of iPhone then follow suit. In terms of camera, I think Sony is on par with any other flagship and I agree with you that it's just down to the principles. The Sony gives us more every year and I really think their on the right track, just a bit more fine tuning and minor improvements.
