Never caulk ALL the way around the base of your toilet (if you do decide to caulk). Always leave the very back side of the toilet base NOT caulked so that if there's a leak where the wax ring or rubber fitting are supposed to be sealing your toilet to the flange, the leaking water has a place to come out and you'll be alerted to the fact that there's a leak.
Came to comments just for this. Never caulk all the way around a toilet. I have unfortunately pulled toilets that had been caulked in that had been leaking for a long time without any signs till you pull the toilet. It's a very gross science experiment!
I have been a handyman for over 20 years and am very successful at it. This guy is my go to for most of what I do....especially floors and tile. Thank you my man.
Sir, I came to get an answer to a question. I left blessed and teary eyed by your prayers. Thank you. You see my dad used to pray for me like that. For literally anything I was worried over or trying to learn. He is with Jesus now, and I find myself going to UA-cam to get answers to the questions I would normally ask him. You prayed and I realized that’s what I was missing, his prayers that my project would go well. Keep praying, it makes a difference.
Just a note on cabinets... in my 35+ years home improving I have never attached cabinets to the floor except as an island or peninsula, or a side panel (often needed for a dishwasher). Cabinets attach to the wall. Remove them, run the flooring and put them back. Thanks for cluing us in on the use of padding. I sent this video to my customer. Your expertise is much appreciated. 🙂🙂
Joe, Thank you so very much for your amazing videos. I am a single mother with a teenage Son and we have been watching your videos preparing to do flooring throughout our home. I feel very confidant in my skill level as I am a do it your selfer for many years and your videos are just the boost we need to make this project happen. Thank you for your prayers, you are an amazing human.
Joe, you absolutely rock for doing this. You have a great way of explaining what you're doing and making it fool proof for idiots like myself. I jist put a vinyl plank floor throughout my house and it looks amazing. Thanks to you I have no transition strip and no gaps around door casing. I can't thank you enough. Keep doing what your doing. And God bless, my friend
Joe, my wife and I decided on home depots life proof 2 years ago in three rooms in our house. This was before we saw your UA-cam video. We followed the directions on these cartons but there was "Joe" explanations on installations problems. We went to the UA-cam for help and it seems the the divine helper sent us to you and we do thank you. It was expensive to do all our rooms with this product but now we are thankful for this decision. A couple of transition instead of a possible 4 more were eliminated and this truly was a win-win for us.
Dude... first time I've caught one of your instructional videos. Loved the advice but just so Thankful for the Prayers of Blessing at the end. Played it for my Wife to hear also. Sincerely, from another Brother in Christ!!
This video told me exactly what I wanted to hear. I’m about to lay a thick vinyl with attached pad on concrete and I’m being told to put extra padding by friends. I just don’t want that extra cushion. I don’t want any amount of soft feel under foot. I want the floor to feel solid. But people say “fatigue”. My foot! The only alternative for South Florida would be tile and you don’t hear people yelling “but fatigue” with tile. I don’t understand why you wouldn’t want the most solid surface you can get. Thanks as always Joe!
So I wanted my main level to be one level of LVP with no transitions. Took out the carpet but the other 3 rooms with linoleum were higher than the subfloor (and I did not want the hassle of removing linoleum). So I used Steico 6mm underlayment in order to bring the subfloor up to the level of my linoleum. Steico is a wood product underlayment so you don't get that extra cushion that happens with those cheap roll-out pads. I also found this to be a great added sound deadener.
We did my house with a pad and I am just full of regrets. At first it was amazing. It was quiet and soft and I loved the feel. But only after 6 months nearly all the floor where we walk is severely damaged from the flex of the cusion. I'm doing another house for my brother and I am not putting any padding down this next time...
A few years ago, we bought an apartment that the owner had made some upgrades to. One of those updates was to put Pecan Traffic Master over the carpet and pad. 🤦🏻♂️ when we did our first walkthrough, it was like walking in a hard sponge. Lol. Thankfully, the house was dirt cheap. I carefully removed the flooring piece by piece and found carpet, pad, and 2 layers of sheet flooring. Lol. I reinstalled it over a quality under pad and glued the seams with PVA. 4 years later, it still looking great. :)
From a flooring installer that also does remodels, DON'T install the plank and then cutout where the cabinets will go, unless you're installing your own cabinets. If I had to follow someone that did that and then I couldn't shim the front of the cabinets, had to have an extra person at all times to move the cabinets, I'd have to debate between doubling the price or leave
I am super grateful that you’re taking time away from your work and life to make these videos. I’ve watched a couple already and they are super helpful!! Best instructions for installing flooring on the Internet, hands down
Man, your videos have helped me out tremendously. I’m in the middle of prepping my floor for vinyl planking and his videos are priceless. I am really grateful you taking time away from your work and life to make these videos!!
I always wondered about the seasonal movement of vinyl plank flooring when watching some of these other install videos. They say to leave a 1/4” gap all around when doing a massive room or whole house, then they tell you you leave a 1/4” gap when doing a small powder room or bathroom (typically about 5’x9’. It just doesn’t make sense to leave that big a gap in those small areas. I’ve done my two bathrooms with vinyl plank leaving a 1/8” gap and just used color matched silicone to fill the gaps at bathtubs, doorways and vanities. Gives a much cleaner look than 1/4 rounds or transitions everywhere.
Hello to you today. Lately I've been watching videos on flooring by many different people including Home Renovision. So far, I enjoy your videos best for many reasons, you speak calmly, truthfully without giggles or aggravating music. You show the products clearly with moving the product constantly...we can then take a good photo. You do comparisons without prejudice and your honesty come trough loud and clear. Thank you fr. Canada.
Hey just a quick tip that I'd like to share with anyone who reads this. With CAULK, & Silicinized Caulk, they will MOLD when exposed to wet environs. SILICONE wont. Also when using silicone PUSH THE BEAD IT AHEAD OF THE TUBE, that way it's pushes out any water under it. And DRAG the caulk into the gaps. Also one thing think of the difference between the original floor level and your toilet flange and any height difference. Like if you had to add an underlayment, and then the LVP . You may need to add a TOILET FLANGE EXTENSION RING to level up the toilet.
This is the BEST DIY podcast for flooring I found to date. It covered all my questions without frivolous chit-chat. THANK YOU, especially for the prayer.
Wow...👏👏👏... awesome explanation I've been installing laminate and vinyl flooring now for 15yrs and I get asked the same thing do I need pad! Awesome video!
This guy obviously knows his job because in his videos he knows what info to speak about because he's been there. Came here for one answer..left with 4. Great videos!
Joe thankyou and God Bless. Your videos are very help full and intuitive, Its a wonderful hearing first hand from a professional like you on these projects. Again, thankyou and God bless.
Great video I installed 1800 squares of msi rigid core vinyl flooring with a pad attached. I wanted to install an additional pad underneath but the manufacturer didn’t recommend it I only put a 6 mil plastic vapor barrier because of the concrete subfloor glad I did
Im a small time guy, but my limited experience is just right with this guy when it comes to when to put it under cabinets, dishwasher, toilet and frig. Really important to know this! Great stuff!!!
Your advice fits what the manufacture recommends. Your advice on installing is better than most manufactures especially when it comes to using those spaces they push so hard.. spacers are nowhere near as nice and reliable as using some blocks to do your spacing with. Great advice and you certainly know your vinyl plank flooring.
So glad you mentioned the bathroom vanity thing. I've torn out my tile...had some leveling work done on my slab and removed the bathroom vanity because my tile was installed under it and it was easier for me to remove the vanity than to cut the tile around it. But I "was" wondering if it was a good idea to go ahead and put the vinyl plank down before re-installing the vanity. The only real "up side" would have been that the plank would raise it to almost it's original height so that I'd really only have to caulk the gap between it and the vanity. I've decided to get the vanity back in first and may consider just shimming the cabinet to get it to it's original height. My only remaining fear/question is whether my plan to roll the frig out to the middle of the kitchen...lay my plank...and then roll the frig back before finishing the kitchen, is going to be a problem. Any videos on this? I really don't want to move the thing out of the kitchen because it would either require a long trip to the front door and then back over newly laid vinyl plank to get it back...OR....a step down out the back door (and back up again)
I'll take the prayers and the advice. About 20 hours watching flooring videos and this was the only one I needed. Thank you brother and I hope you have a blessed day as well.
Joe ,I like your method of using cheater block .I deployed it on a whole house vinyl job I did ! I made several rooms blend together without transition molding .I was doing an old house in a former coal mine patch town .Well built ,old ,but some of the partition walls were not put in square !Had some unique miracles to pull off making things work the best I could.
I recently had to fire a contractor for doing 50 square feet of vinyl flooring in 3 days, and even that was shotty. I did notice he was using roofing felt underlayment under my already padded vinyl. How will that affect my flooring even though its not really padded? Alsi, I can tell from this video that you're an awesome guy! Thanks for the Info!
I stumbled on your video and am so impressed with your knowledge and honesty. Most of all I like that you prayed for us and in JESUS name. God richly bless you.
Fine... I won't install the pad that I bought and will return it. I as under the impression that it would reduce the amount of subfloor prep I would have to do. You bad a great point about the joints though and that is what really convinced me.
Thanks - I have a kitchen floor project coming up! Lots of layers - sheet vinyl over particle board over linoleum tile over who knows what. 1908 farmhouse, so lots of history in the construction.
I appreciate your help so much. I made the mistake of using underlayment under a pad attached vynl floor and a quarter of the way in I'm seeing gaps that cannot be closed. Now I see why. Thank you so much man God bless you and your family.
Thanks joe I've been watching all your vinyl plank videos and today was my first day ever installing vinyl plank in my home it's coming out beautiful 👌thanks for all the tips and all that you do thanks for your prayers God bless you and your family🙌
Wow 😮!!!!! They serve two different purposes on a vinyl plank the padding is for noise deeding. For laminate (composite planks) The padding is a moisture barrier
Joe: I am installing Coreluxe Icelandic Walnut Waterproof LVP with pad on concrete floor. I purchased the QuietWalk underlayment for LVP. Label states it can be used for LVP with pad. I had already had purchased 6 mil moisture barrier and had one bedroom already done. There is a closet in this bedroom which I had not yet started and had not put any moisture barrier in it. So I laid the QuietWalk in it and installed the LVP. I noticed right away that when I walked into the closet the floor sounded hollow compared to the solid sound when walking in the bedroom. Since the closet was about 5 ft by 5 ft, I thought that compared to the 12 by 16 ft bedroom that the closet could yield echoes. So I laid out the quiet walk in another room and placed 10 planks on it. When I walked on it - it sounded hollow. So I took the planks off the QuietWalk and placed them on the moisture barrier. When I walked on it- it sounded solid. At our church they installed LVP in the Welcome area and it sounds hollow when you walk on it. The Welcome area has a concrete floor. So I determined that the LVP with pad installed on QuietWalk will sound hollow. I do not like that sound. I prefer a solid sound when walking on LVP. I will be returning the unopened rolls of QuietWalk. I will continue to install LVP in the concrete floor rooms with the 6 mill moisture barrier. Thank you for your videos. They have been very helpful. God bless you and your family.
Thanks Joe, you saved me close to $400 on padding. The guy at the flooring store said I needed padding but after listening to you, I am going to follow your advice. It makes sense about the extra cushion. I think the store guy wanted to make an extra sale. I purchased 30 boxes of DuraLux Performance Luxury Vinyl Plank Foam Back and going to start installation tomorrow. God Bless You Brother
Thankyou!!! Another yt channel recommended underlayment under vinyl planks regardless of attached padding, so this really took the anxiety under our flooring, and reduced the cost since we are already over budget on our home build. Blessings and prayers to you as well!
My contractor said even if the LVP has a pad when you are installing on concrete you have to put a pad down regardless. He gave examples of when two home did it differently ?
thanks Joe, you’ve eased some of the worries with the vinyl plank flooring that will be installed in my house soon!! blessings to you and your family!!
THANK YOU very, very much for sharing your expertise. I found you by looking for installation tips, now realizing I can install the new dishwasher on top of the new flooring. Seriously, Joe, may God bless you for being so generous with your knowledge. I deeply appreciate the details you have shared. I had wondered about underlayment, but just learned from you to look at the product to see it the underlayment is already attached. You are definitely doing God's work when you educate others. Stay blessed!
Getting ready to DIY some laminate plank in our bathroom and really appreciate your videos! However, everything I've heard from plumbers is NOT to caulk around the base of your toilet because, if the wax seal ever leaks, then you can't easily see that water and it forces it to build up and get under your flooring before you realize there's a problem. I've seen it done many many times, but it's not actually recommended.
Thank you was about to add vynil plank with pad and the Home Depot ordering app suggested buying underlayment so I bought it but I will be installing my floor without underlayment thanks so much.
I applaud your audio quality. I watch some of these DIY videos and and the sound sucks so bad I have to turn up the volume on my TV to maximum and forget to turn it back down when the next video plays.
Thank you for your videos. I am about to install vinyl flooring in my ex sister in-law house. I am very blessed to run across your channel. I like to do things right, and you have shared your knowledge and experience for all to benefit. Most love to keep that to themselves and benefit themselves. For this, I truly hope you have a fantastic year, sir. Please use his link on Amazon so that he may prosper more.
I went over a very uneven ceramic tile crap job someone did with snap lock vinyl flooring. I used a 22 ml backing and have had ZERO problems and looks even and level as can be
What you said makes an incredible amount of sense in every aspect. Your experience and knowledge in this area is quiet obvious. I'll be subscribing to your channel immediately. I especially loved your prayer 🙏
Joe- thank you so much for the information. One question- Should I put down a moisture barrier liner in the kitchen floor before putting down the vinyl planks? The floor is cement. I'm glad to know not to put down planks under the cabinets. Thank you. I was wondering about the moisture barrier. I just had a hot water pipe burst fixed. Thank you.
You advised not to put kitchen cabinets over vinyl flooring, but can you put closet wardrobes on top of vinyl flooring in a walk-in closet? I assume it is different than kitchen cabinets and if they can uphold the refrigerator weight then a closet system should be fine on top of the flooring. Thank you so much for your informative video!!
This was very informative info. Especially the part about the fact that you can install plank under appliances (frig, stove etc.). I've been getting conflicting recommendations about this. Thank you for clarifying this!
God Bless you too, Joe, and thank you for your great videos. I'm getting ready to begin my first laminate plank floor installation in a bedroom in our ranch style home. The floor is concrete. This video discussed whether or not to use a pad, so if I purchase laminate planks that have that pad on the back, do I also need to put down a plastic vapor barrier? The answer is probably yes, but I wanted to ask you as a trusted expert. Thank you.
I took your advice on taking up all my NuCore Performance Rigid Core LVP - Cork backed. and removing old hardwood underneath. Some of the 20 yr old hard wood was warped in most areas and subfloor underneath being unleveled some areas. Making vinyl on top shift and make cracking noise seemed to be coming from between locking mechanisms. Floor Associate at the store where got LVP recommended put down sound dataning sentinl moisture barrier with this corked back LVP. Exactly what you explained was happening to my floor. Making a rice crispy sound some people say is do to the clicking locking system. To me flet like the vinyl floor was sitting to high on the cushion vaper barrier combined with vinyl floor already having cork back felt like it was apart of the problem. Also floor felt squishy with the exstra padding uncomfortable Synthetic feeling to me like it never formed or madded to the ground because of the exstra cushioning. Don't know the difference with out the Cushion vapor barrier but my question is if I put down just a plastic non cushion vapor barrier because its going on a concrete subfloor would you recommend one and also a role on paint on vaper barrier to for exstra blockage you'd recommend? My concrete subfloor was reading 16/ 20% moisture levels directly after remove of old vaper barrier sure something to do with all moisture being traped in there for while. My installer said when i told him wanted to go with regular plastic non cushion vaper barrier said it will definitely make a worst annoying sound then the cushion vaper barrier. Any advice be much appreciated you may have worked with nucore before newer product still. Not sure how it (wouldn't) be the (better choice)seeing non cushion vapor barrier not thick enough or made out of a Styrofoam material like the cushion Vapor barrier. Just tryin to aviod all problems since 2nd time around reinstalling the LVP. I wish you where out chicago area sir.
Thank you for your prayers for your viewers! I appreciate all of the helpful information you put out there. I pray that you and your family will also be blessed by Jesus 😊
Never caulk ALL the way around the base of your toilet (if you do decide to caulk). May be it's best to not remove the toilet. I prefer to just install around it.
I have been a handyman for over 20 years and am very successful at it. This guy is my go to for most of what I do....especially floors and tile. Thank you my man.
Thanks for sharing
That's great. I use a couple of handymen who needs to watch this gentleman and a whole lot of other people on youtube.
An evil handyman?
Sir, I came to get an answer to a question. I left blessed and teary eyed by your prayers. Thank you. You see my dad used to pray for me like that. 25 years in flooring..I agree with everything I've seen in all the videos I've seen so far..obviously an educated and experienced installer
Thank you man!
joe, from an old installer of 45 years, nice job, its been fun to watch
Thanks for that!

Man, your videos have helped me out tremendously. I’m in the middle of prepping my floor for vinyl planking and his videos are priceless. I am really grateful you taking time away from your work and life to make these videos!!
Gosh this guy is humble and amazing! Love this channel!
that was the best advice i have heard for doing my floor, why spend money on a pad, put the extra money into the plank. Thank you

This is the BEST DIY podcast for flooring I found to date. It covered all my questions without frivolous chit-chat.

I really like watching this guy! It was my first time and I got through 4 rooms/575 Sq ft!! So helpful. Thanks, brother! God bless you and your work!
I am currently installing High Performance vinyl in my son's house. Your video's have been very helpful!!! Thanks so much!!!

You can do it!
Thank you for the tips, I am now realizing I need to do a bunch of prep work, and thank you so much for the prayers, God Bless you and your Family ♡♡♡
You are so welcome!
spend more on thicker plank versus a separate pad - especially on the additional labor! - great point there
Thank you for this information. I just bought laminate floors and I opted for the 12 mm and didn’t buy pad or underlay. Love your videos

I appreciate that!
Thanks - I have a kitchen floor project coming up! Lots of layers - sheet vinyl over particle board over linoleum tile over who knows what. 1908 farmhouse, so lots of history in the construction.
Sounds familar!
That is awesome!
Wow 😮!!!!! They serve two different purposes on a vinyl plank the padding is for noise deeding. For laminate (composite planks) The padding is a moisture barrier
Thank you my Brother for blessing me with your knowledge. You bless me. May God richly bless you for your kindness!!
Same to you!
Thank you for your prayers and God bless you as well!!!
You are so welcome
Joe:
I am installing Coreluxe Icelandic Walnut Waterproof LVP with pad on concrete floor.
I noticed right away that when I walked into the closet the floor sounded hollow compared to
the solid sound when walking in the bedroom. Since the closet was about 5 ft by 5 ft, I thought that
compared to the 12 by 16 ft bedroom that the closet could yield echoes.
I purchased 30 boxes of
DuraLux Performance Luxury Vinyl Plank Foam Back and going to start installation tomorrow.
God Bless You Brother
Glad I could help
God bless you Joe for your help and patience teaching, I started practicing your tricks, thank you again.
Anytime!
Thankyou!!! Another yt channel recommended underlayment under vinyl planks regardless of attached padding, so this really took the anxiety under our flooring, and reduced the cost since we are already over budget on our home build. Blessings and prayers to you as well!
You are welcome!
Thanks Joe you answered my questions on not putting cabinets on vinyl floors great job Tom
I love that you Prayed 🙏🏽 God Bless!
Thank you mate. God bless you & family too.
Thank you kindly
Thanks. I was planning to uninstall kitchen cabinets and putting new flooring under there.
I like using the cork style padding. Good for bathrooms
Just watched your video Joe and hearing you praying and blessings for your viewers was the clincher for me! 👍 and subscribe and blessings for you too!
Welcome aboard!
Hey! Thank you!
The part about cabinets or appliances on the flooring was great info for me!
You’re the guy for flooring
Keep giving, we’re asking
Will do!
My contractor said even if the LVP has a pad when you are installing on concrete you have to put a pad down regardless. He gave examples of when two home did it differently ?
Love the ending with God’s blessings! Thanks for the help and the witness!
thanks Joe, you’ve eased some of the worries with the vinyl plank flooring that will be installed in my house soon!! blessings to you and your family!!
Glad to help
Great educational video. I sell and install LVP professional and I get these questions all the time. You are spot on. 👍🏻
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for this!
Hit em with that prayer lol. After a year of getting these rooms remodeled im ready to do flooring, thanks for the prayer to get me through this.
You’re a good guy and thank you for the prayers it helps.
Any time and thank you!
Thank you!

Thank you, I appreciate that!
I went over a very uneven ceramic tile crap job someone did with snap lock vinyl flooring. I used a 22 ml backing and have had ZERO problems and looks even and level as can be
Thanks for sharing
Thank you Joe for sharing you experience. Christ Bless you.
Thank you!
Thanks Joe. I was wondering about install under dishwasher, Fridge, and oven. Nice clear succinct videos! Much appreciated.
Glad it was helpful!
What you said makes an incredible amount of sense in every aspect. Your experience and knowledge in this area is quiet obvious. I'll be subscribing to your channel immediately. I especially loved your prayer 🙏
Thanks man!
When do you or when can you glue vinyl plank down
Thank you for the well-explained and timely video, So That's...since currently laying vinyl flooring in my basement.
Joe, I've watched a lot of your videos, but this was definitely the one video I needed. You just answered every question I had. Thank you so much!
You bet!
Thank you.
Yes, if it is a laminate then add a vapor barrier. If it is vinyl plank then I would not add a vapor barrier.
Thank you for the Blessing, Joe.
Did not expect that blessing at the end at all, but cool thanks you too
I took your advice on taking up all my NuCore Performance Rigid Core LVP - Cork backed.
and removing old hardwood underneath.
I would use quiet walk. It will work great in this situation.
Thank you for taking the time to do this for us
Any time!
Thank you for your prayers for your viewers! I appreciate all of the helpful information you put out there. I pray that you and your family will also be blessed by Jesus 😊
Thank you and I will take that blessing!!
