  • This video about Setting Aquascape Without CO2, Filter and Fertilizer is the first video of a series in my Walstad Method Project. This Aquascape Without CO2, Filter and Fertilizer will be updated. The first update is here:
    • Video
    The third video can be watch here:
    • Video
    Setting an aquascape without CO2, filter and fertilizer is possible by using The Walstad Method. The Walstad Method is a way to setting a planted tank with a substrate containing a soil under layer. The basic principle is to create a balanced ecosystem where our fish and plants provide each other needs. The plants will absorb ammonia and nitrate while our fish produce them all the time. This method to setting an aquascape allow us to minimize the maintenance including water change schedule. Of course, we still need to do water change once for a while but it doesn’t have to be once a week.
    Aquascape without CO2 like the one in this video can only grow low demanding plants. A plant with high CO2 needs will barely survive in this kind of environment. The list of plants used in this tank are:
    1. Helanthium tenellum
    2. Sattaria subulata
    3. Cryptocoryne wendtii
    4. Bolbitis heteroclita
    5. Sagittaria subulata
    6. Limnophila-sessiliflora
    7. Cabomba caroliniana
    8. Cabomba furcata
    9. Egeria densa
    all of them but Cryptocoryne wendtii and Bolbitis heteroclita are easy to grow and low demanding plants. That’s why this aquascape without CO2 will works (supposedly).
    Aquascape without filter is prone to an algae outbreak due to unbalance nutrients and less water movements. Using fast growing plants such as cabomba, hydrilla and frog bit can prevent this problem. Those plants can quickly absorb ammonia, nitrate and other nutrients from the water and prevent algae to grow. Aquascape without filter with fast growing plants like this should be algae free but anything can happen especially before the plants settled.
    Our plants definitely need macro and micro nutrients but aquascape without fertilizer like this can still provide them. Using a layer of soil underneath, like the usual Walstad Method, our plants can still absorb nutrients from their roots. Normally, an aquascape without fertilizer like this can only provide our plants need for six months but we’ll see how long it will sustain.

    I very much appreciate your using the scientific names of the plants that you incorporated into this design. Here in Missouri, the word "moss" can denote algae, duckweed, aquatic ferns, or any vegetation that covers the surface of a pond.

    My pet store lady recommends you soak the rocks in water for 24 hours before adding them to the tank. Everything else is beautiful!!! (You technically did this with the water change but just saying for those who just want to throw a rock into an already established aquarium)

    • @savannairis7580

      Debris and other containments release deep from the rock when soaking it (or I could be wrong) but I would never risk a fish’s life so I’ve done this ALWAYS and never had any die on me

      I’ve already been really attached to fish. I understand they all look like this one, but this one is special in my eyes. The only time I lost a fish was due to weird complications and I would treat them and some would get better, some don’t. I also don’t buy a whole bunch at once. I did have two ick attacks in the past and my Paradise Gourami survived it all. He/she lets me touch her gently and hand feed her. I’ve had her for about three years now tho

      Omg, I dont know where he lives, but if I just threw some top soil and rocks from the back yard into our fish tank with out doing some serious MAJOR soaking/detoxifying, our fish would either be sinkers, floaters, or radioactive wonder cichlids.

    Pak, yg ini tank nya dilanjutin, 1 bln, 3bln, 6bln dst bisa jadi bahan content, jgn direscape ya...
    Persis fooflowerhorn, sy suka.
    Sy buat seperti ini jg, walstad tp ugf di tank 60cm, bawah sy gravel 5-8mm, atasnya tanah organik beli ditukang taman. Sy running, ternyata tanah organik tsb ada cocopeatnya, (sy tanpa kayu, style jungle sj) jd air berwarna kuning, 1 bulan 1 tunggu dgn siklus WC, tetap kuning. Akhirnya sy timpa dgn pasir malang warna merah 2cm, alhamdulillah clean n clear...

    nah... murah tapi ribet kan?
    akhir kata, ane emang gak se-expert itu dalam aquascape. tapi setelah cukup lama lalu lalang trial error, buat ane medium budget pake dry start lebih memuaskan dan cukup murah IMHO.

    If you add fish, how would you clean the debris they leave behind?(poop, leftover food, etc.)

    • @CoretanIjo
      @CoretanIjo  5 років тому +2

      That is probably the cons of this tank. Cleaning the debris is a must to do in a normal tank but in this tank, we can't do that.
      This tank is actually an implementation of Diana Walstad's natural planted tank method. The basic idea is to let the leftover food or fish poop as the fertilizer for the plants and the plants will absorb the harmful chemical such as ammonia and nitrates that produced from those leftovers.
      Currently, this tank has a couple of fish in it and I don't clean the debris. If I clean the debris, I think this tank won't last for long because the garden soil that I use won't provide nutrition for the plants forever.

    • @omarhernandez1420
      @omarhernandez1420 5 років тому

      Another question. Would you ever have to switch out the soil?

    • @CoretanIjo
      @CoretanIjo  5 років тому +3

      I think it will be simpler to give up on the 'no fertilizer' tag than switch out the soil. So I don't have any plan to switch out the soil. If the nutrients are depleted then I'll use root tab to replenish them.

    Hi, I have a 5 gallon tank. First time fish keeper with live plants. I set the tank yday but skipped the step where u let the water stand for 24hrs. Instead I added plants and started to cycle it without fish. Is it OK to drain the water tomorrow and replant?

    • @CoretanIjo
      @CoretanIjo  5 років тому

      if the plants don't show any sign of stress then no need to change the water nor replant them. If the plants start to melt then it's ok to change the water and replant tomorrow.

    Permisi bro, mau nanya kalo misal pake metode walstad tp susunan substratenya (bakteri starter + rumah bakteri + soil + pasir malang) dengan maksud memperbanyak bakteri untuk cycling nitrogen.dll itu bisa ga gan? Nb : ukuran tank 60cm
