The Madurai Chithirai Festival

Every year in the month of April, the Madurai Chithirai Thizuvizha marks the wedding of Devi Meenakshi with Lord Shiva, with Lord Vishnu bringing gifts for the newly married couple to the Vaigai river.

I was born in a village near Madurai. I used to participate Chitra festival every year till I was student. After getting job, I could not go to Madurai during festival time every year.
Surprisingly, I never asked anybody the sequence of festival & reason for that.
Only, Today , I have come to know that as to why Water is opened in Vaigai river ahead of festival, why Alagar was returning midway , Why water is sprinkled on Alagar Palanquin, Why Temple car is pulled in Masi street, Why Mandapanm was built inside the river etc .
