Wyoming is no joke. My first trip through there, they had 100 mph wind gusts. Parked at the Wagonhound rest area, dropped my trailer because I thought I was going to tip over. When I left in the morning I counted 23 trucks blown over off the road.

Oversize usually ends up being a hassle more than what it’s worth, especially when escorts are 2 dollars a mile each

I would stay away from an OD that’s needing all that. You are 💯 correct that’s it’s more trouble.

@@pinoytrucking yeah and you can’t go into it thinking about regular flatbed rates because than the rates will always be hood, you gotta price accordingly to the oversize

One of my buddies used to haul prefab out houses. Said he would gross like 120k with a 2 axle trailer. Just paid a few bucks for a heavy permit. No need for 3 axle trailer in that instance.

If your a runner type trucker, meaning fast efficient and never take much time at truck stops. Then taking a oversized load is a hassle. To many restriction, plus the route is always avoiding the freeway, and brings you downtown all the time where accidents can happen. Whosever makes up those routes has no sense. Not to mention you can only go so fast, only drive at daytime. I could do two other loads before you can deliver the oversized load, It would have to pay super good for me to do it.

Oversized loads always looks attractive until you actually run them. I stopped running oversized loads once I became an o/o, You touched upon a lot of the negatives so good for you, many people don't. There is a really good reason why it sucks. Restricted hours, escort vehicles, reduced speed limits (many places you are not suppose to exceed 55) etc. Also I hate the fact that you have to run on the route that is outlined in your permit so the listed miles is never what you actually pull. If google maps predicts you will run 1000 miles, just be aware that you are probably going to run a lot more miles to deliver this load, so these load calculators aren't very accurate. You really need to route plan, as in every turn. Once you go off route, you are technically running illegal. So you can't make a mistake and with summer months and its construction season, these routes get very confusing. The other thing I really hate is that you will be driving on back road, secondary roads, and least not forget that odd 1-10 miles that isn't covered in the permit. It doesn't happen that often but it does. you need to route plan and if you do it carefully, you'll see that certain cities require a separate permit that won't be included in the packet because its rather obscure. Normally, you drive on the major freeways through the city, but the oversized load requires you to drive via a secondary highway or worse some small 2 lane state highway. Unfortunately, that little stretch requires a separate city permit (that may not be included with your packet) If I didn't route plan every turn, I would have missed it too. The thing is I'm anal and I don't risk my CDL for a few dollars, that's why i route plan oversized this carefully. For regular flat bed loads, all I ever do for route-planning is the last 5 miles. Its mostly load and go but not when i pulled oversized loads. It is rare but it did happen to me a few times (ok 2 time in 4 years). So when you try to call in for the extra permit, that delays your load at unexpected times. The point is, there are a lot of unplanned delays and frustrations when dealing with oversized loads. So after you pull that oversized load, a 2 day trip may very easily end up being a 4-6 day trip. (winter months are the worse with really short hours). Don't forget parking. LOL. You may need two spaces or more. I remember once, I had to park my load in 2 spaces and then find an empty one for my bobtail. At least you can shut down early so the truck stops aren't full unless you happen to want to stop in a popular areas.
There is one really nice thing that I loved about oversized loads. With your escorts, they will block off a 2-lane highway so that you will be the only truck on that section of road. Its a fun experience because you are all alone and you can really enjoy the scenery. I did that on a stretch of 60 entering LA. No traffic at least not in front of me, it was amazing.
Now supersized oversized loads are a different story. That money is obscene and I guess its every truckers dream. My company never allowed me to pull those and as an O/O i don't have to money for the trailers or an upgraded semi. Plus, i really don't want the hassle.
But in this environment, it makes sense to pull oversized loads. we sit a lot, these delays won't affect you overall revenue. Since there aren't many loads and these hassle aren't so bad. In this environment, I wouldn't mind spending 4 days driving 1200 miles. I wouldn't even mind dealing with escort vehicles and the other restrictions. You just have to do what you have to do to survive. Cudos to you.

Thank you for the insight. Normally I wouldn’t touch OD. Specially something needs an escort. I’m not confident enough to pull it off. This run in particular was rerouted onto the US30 which was right along I80. I think the out of route wasn’t bad maybe an added 20miles about what it was actually quoted for. The only reason why I’m actually resorting to these type of loads is something you touch up on already. Such a tough market right now with regular loads. Specifically where I was at. Ones again I was able to get a reset by sitting in a spot while looking for loads. Needless to say I haven’t made it to an area I really wanted to operate. Hehehe but you hit the nail on the head. I can’t sit around there forever so I needed to loaded but wasn’t desperate enough to cut into my profit margin by taking undesirable rates.
