- Pet waste is a big problem across the country from big cities to apartment complexes. Many dog owners blatantly ignore signs that say curb your dog or pick up after your pet. Now, there's a unique way of tracking down dog owners who refuse to pick up after their dog's poop. PooPrints is a DNA laboratory in Knoxville, Tennessee that specializes in dog poop. The lab processes 18,000 samples a month and generated more than $65 million in fines for their clients.
As a dog owner myself, it annoys me when people don't clean up after their dogs! If you don't want to bend down or touch it, get a scooper that has a long handle!

I don’t see why people don’t pick up after their dogs when they take a dump at all. I mean, come on. It doesn’t take a minute for them to do it.

i hate when people don't pick it up but at the same time i like to give people the benefit of the doubt sometimes. my friends dogs will walk and poop at the same time so sometimes its hard to find every piece, especially when its dark or its in a place that has a lot of leaf litter, or when there's a lot of fresh snow. plus if its a soft BM its not always easy to clean everything up. also nothing is to stop someone to be an a hole and collect from a trash can to harass others with hefty fines. accidents happen.
My apartment in Fort Collins had this policy. All dogs DNA tested and a big fine for violations.

The complex I used to live in did this. People were annoyed by it but it was more annoying for the rest of us that didn’t have dogs and were sick of not being able to walk through the grass.

I thought of this 20 years ago 😅 I lived in a neighbourhood with a lot of dogs and unfortunately dna testing was not cheap. I was never able to make it work… glad someone else is as vindictive as I am! Go team petty! 🎉

wait a minute, this company can process 18,000 samples a month?! I'm sure they're making money doing this, but wouldn't those facilities & personnel be of better use, processing the horrible backlog of rape kits around the country? it's got to be the same equipment, and basically same skill set for the people, right? get sample, extract DNA, run it, then compare it (if there's anything to compare it to, but at least get the crime sample into a database)
Theres no money to be made doing that though. I guess they could have some of their equipment, and personnel set aside to do some of them for free as a way to get good PR and advertising.
We as humans can/should do something better with our time

I suffered with dog poop on my garden for around a year. My neighbor let's his dogs free at night so that they can poop in the garden of other houses.I caught him once around 3:00 in the morning, when I was working late into night; he let his dog on my front yard to do the deed, I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt, so I waited for him to go inside, but he didn't pick up after and, since he knows that I saw him, cause I opened the curtains when he was leaving, I now never have dog poop on my yard and neither my nearest neighbors. -_-

Shoot. I had the same from my next door neighbor's dog. Know what I did? Pooper scooped it and threw it on their front porch a few times. After that I never saw the dog on my front lawn again. Problem solved. 😄

I've literally walked my dog home and then walked back across to the other side of the neighborhood to bag his poop. Not because I was unprepared, but because my dog decided it was a two dump kind of day. Started bringing two bags after that. It's not that hard, people.
Great! Many neighborhood really needs it. Even after so many notice some people leaving it behind in the walkways and even next to the other tenant's patio.

Yeah I walk my children to school and the people on the corner let their dog poop 💩 all over the sidewalk on the side and front of their house it sucks you wouldn’t believe how many times my children have stepped in it not paying attention & we’ve had to turn around change their shoes sometimes it’s so gross we’ve thrown away their shoes multiple times and we’re on a fixed income & don’t have the money to trash on all the time plus it’s been shoes we’ve just bought and the children have had a complete meltdown that they’re new shoes have to be trashed. It’s beyond inconsiderate, I just wish they would think about our children & scoop the poop.

omg, this is an issue that really makes me angry. I have a dog and I pick up its poop cause I decided to have a dog and that comes with responsibilities as it should. I can't stand it when I see people not picking up their dog's waste not keeping their dogs on leashes and not training their dogs to behave. Its absolutely infuriating

Where I live there's a elementary school next to a park and every morning when I take my child to school there's dog poop all over the school and where we parents park most of the poop is stepped on by the kids. It makes me so mad that some dog owners don't clean up after there pets.

What an interesting idea for a housing complex.
I remember being in Eugene, Oregon years ago, seeing signs "Keep off the grass" all over town. I wasn't used to doing that, and would take shortcuts across green spaces. Only took 2 times of stepping on doggie doo to stop taking shortcuts! Apparently dogs can't read, and the city wasn't enforcing poop pickup enough then.
Its gross to not realize you've stepped in it right away, and unfortunate to walk into your home with poop on your shoes! So I applaud efforts to track down and punish dog owners who will not pick up after their dogs.
This is simple if you can't pick up after your pet, don't get a pet.
Just wait until a disgruntled neighbor goes into one of the trash bins and throws that dog owner’s poop onto the lawn to get them cited.

Wait am I missing something? How do you get a swab of dna from a dog that isn’t yours? Theres always tons of poop near my complex and i don’t understand how they would figure out who’s dog it is?

I wear gloves year round, always have numerous bags, so I'm prepared. It's so disgusting when people don't pick up their dog's poo. It's part of taking care of your pup, so just get it done.

ok... i hate people who don't clean up after their dogs as much as the next guy... but isn't this a bit extreme? I mean this has to be one of those wealthy future dystopian neighborhoods or something lol, because there's no way a regular neighborhood is having dog poop DNA tested so they can fine the owners. A lot of people in my area don't clean up after their dog (i always do) but i wouldn't call it a serious finable problem lol, there have been times where i've run out of bags or something and couldn't clean it up, imagine getting a $250 fine every time that happens. Like, this is on the level of China face scanning everyone so they can track down and arrest people who have ever jaywalked in their past or something. Isn't putting a system like this in place, not only a lot of work but pretty Orwellian feeling?

A neighbor never picks up her dog poo from 2 dogs, its so gross, front yard & sidewalk. She slipped and fell in it 2 wks ago and broke her arm! I still felt bad for her so cleaned up some while waiting for ambulance.
This only works if the complex knows you have a dog and if they can get the samples fresh.
We always clean up dog poop so I hate when we find dog poop from neighbors in our yard.

We have no dogs in my house, and 2 weeks ago someone left a green bag of poo at our curb. I've seen this around our neighborhood. First time one was left in front of our house. Why scoop it in a bag and then toss it? What's the point? It's so annoying.

I’ve always picked up after my dog. Like a mother cleaning up after her kids.
BUT I am guilty of doing dumping when my dog suddenly had the worst diarrhea I’ve ever seen. Like I physically could not pick it up with a bag. Ok there I said it, exposing myself here.
I have 2 little dogs. And yes I pick up after them, but I agree with nucky's owner they're poop can be really little and so to pick up every single piece is kind of hard especially if the grass is long

As someone who had a dog would get glared at for simply walking by with my dog, I appreciate this so much! I always cleaned up after my dog but this would prove it to my past neighbors who always just assumed every dog owner neglected to clean up. (I also never even allowed my dog to go in someone’s yard to begin with and carrier doggie bags for the park and path.)😂
