However, for context, Hoonigan had him out on their channel a few years ago and basically just clowned on the guy the entire team. It was actually kind of surprising to see the Hoonigan guys acting that way. But Rob never let it bother him.
Plot your shock travel as a statistical histogram, that way you know how long your dampers spend in each speed zone, then you can adjust your dampers accordingly so you can shape the distribution curve. Typically you plot the speed on the x axis, and force on the y. As the histogram distribution goes further from 0 on your x axis, the more time your dampers spend in high speeds, the more the distribution stays in the center, the more time the dampers are spending in the low speed range.
Some people will say to shape the distribution curve along the center of the graph, which means your high speed damping is working, but it's not that simple because high speed damping affects handling at higher speeds. High speed rear rebound damping for instance affects the transient response of rear aerodynamics, which comes in handy during high speed changes of direction that require braking.

My grandfather built a coil over pavement sprint car in 1979. He put Ohlin coil over shocks on that car. They are still on that car to this day running vintage racing. I'm not sure if you could imagine how hard it was back then to order shocks from England back then. They debuted that car early in 1990 and broke the track record by over a second. That car held the record for over 20 years.

I used Ohlins TTX shocks on several of my race bikes over the years. One of the best investments for racing you can make! My favorite little detail on them is the roller bearing at the bottom of the spring.

Dude... That mill trick was slicker than cat shit on linoleum. I've watched fuktons of home machinist videos and haven't seen that one. I have, however, done something similar with a pistol drill and an angle grinder.
I love that Rob added those linear position sensors. That small detail is enough proof of his IT background, because the more feedback/input/output you have, more control you'll have over the ultimate outcome, less possibility for unforeseeable circumstances, and more control over foreseeable situations.
No corners cut , no expense saved, all out balls to the wall. So ready to see this thing get dialed in and rip. What a car!
The tightening suspension thing is key. If you are a DIY'er at home doing suspension stuff. Always ALWAYS tighten all travel components with the car fully sitting on the suspension at ride height. You will literally tear the bushings out of your control arms, end links, etc. if they are OEM rubber style. They also make hubstands that make this super easy!
Rob, you MUST use some form of bump stop to keep the shocks from bottoming out. In cases like your rear shocks with short travel I use thin packers made from hard plastic. Delrin or you can buy packers from all the shock companies. Don't learn this the hard way as I did and blow through two sets of rear shocks before figuring out the bottoming out problem. In my case it only happened in hard impacts, like wacking an apex or exit curb or dropping a wheel on corner exit, that kind of thing. Given the Pikes Peak course you will bottom a shock once at least.....Also, did you lube the Torrington bearings? They work without but they work really nicely with a fine film of lubrication. Good stuff, Ohlin's are seriously nice pieces of kit. Can't wait for you to start trying to sort out adjusting 4 Ways, you'll pull what little hair you have out! They make sense, in my experience 3 Way shocks were more than enough, I found the 2 Way adjustability on Rebound very useful, separating high and low speed made my Formula Fords really work well.
22:51 should put a couple of those on the wing to tell you just how much deflection it sees at force. Would be useful to determine (mathematically) just how much you are making (downforce) with that wing in that position - and if you need more or less. You'd need a wind tunnel with scales... otherwise (i think).

I have a 2009 rx8 and when I bought it the person who sold the car for the owner was a gas station with a service garage. They told me the suspension was like a year old it was stock stuff but definitely very hard. I have to check the bushing tip with the lower control arm. Thanks for sharing it. And great video thanks Rob and your team you doing a great job.
I loves these videos so much, they are so techinical, educational and enjoyable that you can be so engrossed. I finished University and started my engineering career journey but given the competitveness of the enigneering/motorsport market it is difficult to find a dream job but these videos allow me to constantly learn about so many different aspects and enjoy them at the same time. Thank you Rob and the team, keep up the amazing work and good luck at Pikes Peak. I am waiting for the next upload 😁😁

I think you should add "The math is mathing!" to your t-shirt line up. Also, I am really excited to see all the content on suspensions.
Referring too rubber brushes, it also extents the life of them by tightening them with cars weight etc will be a massive difference in a track car that's finely tuned. I've been doing this for 25 years. I had chest high adjustable stands I fab up so it can easily be done on lift safely. Good luck Rob an Co

Regarding damper position sensor calibration, in my experience the best place to calibrate the damper position 0-point is with the suspension at full extension/droop with compression travel being measured as positive displacement. Reason being is full extension of the dampers is a fixed engineering dimension which is easily repeatable for calibrating a reference measurement point, as opposed to setting a reference point at an arbitrary chassis ride height which is subject to adjustment and fluctuations if the chassis isn't on perfectly flat and level ground.
The advantages of calibrating this way are that, you're able to better characterize when the suspension first engages the spring (or fully compresses the helper spring) to know what your maximum extension travel is before you lose contact with the spring, which is helpful when looking at suspension data mid-corner to see how much the inside wheels are unloading. You can then also more accurately and consistently characterize when and how hard you start to engage the damper bump stops as the car generates downforce or heaves under braking, and begin optimizing ride height and bump stop spring rates. The really fancy thing to do is install load cell packers around the damper shafts to measure bump stop engagement with force (absolute) rather than displacement (extrapolated).
Another neat trick is, when (not if!) you install suspension load sensors, not only would you then be able to know how much the car weighs and downforce it generates at any speed, you can then also do some trick math to measure your spring rates to calculate and correlate (either in analysis or real-time) the effective wheel rate for each corner of the car versus the spring rates installed. Welcome to the wild and insane world of suspension data!
Ngl rob Dahl is the 3rd person this week I watch that has mentioned tightening ur bushings at curb weight. I always thought it was common knowledge. Cause I used to do the same shit until this old head I used to work with told me about it. But it’s crazy how fr this car has come. When @robdahm you want to go another step further, take a dive into mechanical or rotational inerters (inertial damping). I worked with indycar shocks for a couple years and that’s where a lot of focus is for performance.
Scheckter inerters should fit your dampers. They’re hard to come by and not cheap, but could be interesting for your build.

Adding load while tighten your suspension is so critical. I see it on YT all the time where these "how to" show people the installation but dont cover how important adding load to the suspension while install coilovers
Most OEM literature mandates tightening bushing hardware with the load applied to the suspension. Having a 4-post lift makes this trivial for professional garages.

13:14 as far as I know, that is a normal procedure for stock rubber bushings as these are vulcanized to the inside metal bushing. With polyurethane bushings they should be lubed with silicone grease and moving freely. I mean not totaly loose of course, but should be able to rotate as the suspension travels. Thus you can tighten these in any position. Lubing these up good also helps to eliminate dry bushing squeaks.

Have you considered adding something along the lines of a bump stop "stick"? you can run the softer rate springs on the main body of the coilover, and on an external "shock body" or stick with no valving, you run short 2" tall bump stop springs. This can allow you to have the best of both worlds and major adjustability when the car gets aero-compressed.
you should hold the saw with a out stretched index finger, it helps with cutting the wood and control of the saw.
That car is going to be a weapon. I can only Imagine the next form of the 4 rotor with all this new knowledge…

Well.... poly bushings with a floating bushing pin, just like spherical, you can tighten at droop, won't add any tension. Only a bushing material that is bonded to the inner and outer sleeve, like oem rubber bushings, you need on the ground, or at ride height rather, before tightening.
I run ohlins on my mountain bike because of their moto and race background and they are the best I have ever ridden.

Back in my days at Dynamic I would set ride height on metal vp racing gas cans. That way the lift won’t bottom out.

F1 suspension uses torsion bars and then has other linkage that's designed for anti-squat. It's very trick. Worth watching a video on it.

I swapped out the rear shock on my Honda 919 motorcycle with an Ohlins and the difference was mind blowing. That was a decade ago. I can only imagine how awesome race only spec is today.
After watching how much you guys put into this thing chassis wise and now suspension wise, moving the motor back and we already know the motor is a beast. While also making everything as good as can be while making stuff lighter and just improving every single part of this car. I think this thing is going to be a fucking monster up that mountain and i for one can not wait to see it👌👌
To put 1300 lb/in in perspective, my FD road/track car ran 800 front and 600 rear over GAB 8-way and could range from the very stiff side of a typical sport setup (streetable and good for rough tracks like my home track if Sebring) to “I can’t see to steer” level of stiffness.

Rob didn’t mention it but i imagine with the engine being farther back in the chassis, it will definitely have a better effect on the front springs he just got when they get some load. This thing is going to be a weapon in corners!
