Nertz Avalanche - Mission Ridge - January 2024

January 29, 2024 - Mission Ridge Ski Area - Nertz run - This video/slideshow footage was taken Mon 1/29/24 but the avalanche took place on Sun 1/28/24. I was in charge of avalanche control at Mission Ridge during the mid 70s. I was living at the base area and was enduring an intestinal virus. I got the dynamite ready and loaded the bombs. I got the patrol together and went back to bed. I was puking and diarrhea. The patrol finished the control work and there was a live charge left on Nertz. I got out of bed and skied out and picked up the charge. The pull fire igniter did not set the fuse. It was obvious that the person that threw the charge did not affix the igniter properly. I met with Walt Hampton that evening with Magnus. I explained the situation and he asked who made the mistake. I had to tell him that it was his son. Walt backed me. Walt and Magnus were real men and I was nervous. To this day, total respect!

Cool! I was the one that was partly buried. Right above where you stopped to record at about 2:50, after bonking through the trees and breaking ribs and tearing MCL. Terrain traps are real! My friend stopped about where the uprooted tree was.
