Thanks for having that disclaimer in the beginning. More people ought to have that take. All of a sudden people on the internet think they’re lawyers or something
Your theory is pretty much spot on... the clue is in the 'painting' which tells the story of 'Cupid' and his forbidden love with a human 'Psyche'.. gender roles are reversed as Hoyeon is 'Cupid' who falls for the human who represents Psyche.... She gives up her divinity and becomes human in order to be with him (represented by her taking off her clothes in the rain) Newjeans represent the '9 muses' who follow cupid around with song and dance but do not interfere..... its likely they reported her actions to her father Tony Leung portraying 'Aphrodite' who punishes her by reverting her back to 'cupid' and erases the guys memory of her while making him also fall for someone else. the ending shows cupid going back to newjeans with a look of anger and contempt at them before resuming her role as 'cupid' again. She also looked nervous earlier when she saw them just before she became human.. like she knew that because they were watching there would be repurcussions but she went ahead with it anyway.
You were pretty close on your theory. By the way Shin Wooseok also directed Ditto, ETA and OMG. This is actually a gender twist on the story of Cupid and Psyche from Greek mythology. Hoyeon is Cupid, Vela is Psyche (from painting) and Tony Leung is Venus. Venus was jealous of Psyche’s beauty so she asked her son, Cupid, to make her fall in love with a horrific monster. Instead Cupid fell in love with Psyche but hid the fact he was a god. Venus got angry and made Psyche forget about Cupid. Newjeans we’re portraying muses who are Demi-gods who are the inspiration regarding art, poetry, music etc. to humanity.
I didn't know of a version of the myth where Venus makes Psyche forget about Cupid, though that certainly seems to be what happens in this video. Still with the painting especially I felt like it had to be inspired by the myth at least even though it ends very differently 😊
@@ScottChaplow Haha I mean it's a pretty interesting story, a LOT happened with all the trials Venus put Psyche through, and her scheming sisters and everything, and the fact that Psyche was a human woman who became a goddess in the end I always found really cool, and pretty unique, but yeah haha I wasn't hoping for a retelling of all of that lol
Cool with you is UK garage much like 'new jeans' and 'supershy'.. its clubland dance music (hence the fast pace) but its the 'mainstream' version which was less underground and more 'pop' and 'mainstream' replacing the raps and harder riffs with RnB vocals and softer melodies.. (in your own time listen to some craig david or artful dodger.. they were pinoeers in taking this hard club sound and making it popular to the masses) it was extremely popular in the uk in the late 90s ..... its also my favourite song of theirs joint number 1 with new jeans (also mainstream uk garage) and supernatural. I like others wish getup was longer.. it gives me serious 90s Timbaland produced Aaliyah vibes (her one in a million album specifically)
I don't know the painting, but yeah the guy with wings is most likely Eros/Cupid, and him leaving the bed where a woman is lying makes me think of the myth of Psyche, a tragic story where the human woman Psyche was doomed but rescued by Cupid who fell in love with her, though she doesn't know it's him. She lives in this lavish palace but he is invisible to her and only visits her at night, in bed, when she can't see him in the dark. So I'm guessing this painting depicts him leaving before she wakes up. Psyche goes through a LOT of terrible stuff after that (because Cupid's mother doesn't want them to be together) but she manages to survive it all and eventually becomes a goddess herself (goddess of the soul). So yeah the part where she is Cupid but falls in love with a mortal herself but is invisible to them is similar, but from there on the story seems to be different from the myth of Psyche & Cupid. The NewJeans members here make me think of the "chorus" in ancient Greek plays: A group of singers who had a sort of narrator function. They often also represented a collective of background characters in the play, like townspeople or elders or slaves etc who within the story would be kind of observers anyway. So that also fits with NewJeans actually people "regular people" in the real world, but still being able to see her, and literally singing in the video while being onlookers. I think in the Disney film Hercules they kinda referenced this as well, with the Muses singing some of the narration of the story. If NewJeans are some higher beings, they might be kinda like Muses as well, especially in their flowy dresses like they are in most of the scenes after you've seen them in their initial civilian roles. They definitely look kinda ethereal. And yes justice for _Get Up_ !! I still love it despite only being so short, yeah I'm 100% with you.
"Give me the full version." sobbing. join the club. we're still devastated.
