Love this talk. Going paperless right now, researching scanner/software. I did eliminate all my old books when we moved, now I'm left with tax files, business files & hobby files. So my next project is to scan the old stuff & keep the new stuff in the cloud. This is going to make a huge difference in my house for just the storage of it all. Wanna know the funny part? I do paper crafts. But that inventory is a tiny part of the paper in my house, the rest of it is going away. Keeping the information & just changing the delivery system.
I've been wanting to be paperless for years. It makes life so much easier. I dislike how it's still frowned upon in university if you pull out your phone to make notes; even though functionally it's so much better cause I pick it up later on any device. Same with qualifications, I don't wanna work for years for pieces of paper, give me something that I can access anywhere, that I can never lose. Definitely frees your mind.
The problem with digital is that it can distract you much more than with papir and pen. Easy ending up watching ted talk when you should be working with other things...
With the upcoming iOS 12 update you can set time frames where access to certain apps are restricted during certain times, so you can block youtube and facebook during work hours. If you can't trust yourself not to unblock them you can have a trusted friend set a parental control password for you.
Why are people so negative about this I think it’s a pretty good thing and it saves a lot of paper. In high school my notes are as tall as my legs when stacked and I used so much money on notes and printing. Now in college I don’t print anything anymore cause I’m too lazy. It’s neater but sometimes yea I would prefer paper but it’s more convenient to have It digital. I think it is the future. I’m going to get an iPad soon and hopefully can forgo notebooks and sketchbooks. And yea it’ll be like writing on hand if I get an Apple Pencil. But it’s personal preference of course. No one is forcing you to change. And yes people print emails I’ve seen it omg in office 🤦🏻♀️
well i don't want to live my life on a screen... yes for documents and all these things, also some books (i have a kindle), but not EVERYTHING. studying on paper, writing on paper... so much freedom, i think that it's what suits better our mind. just in this way we are able to make our thoughts flow properly, to reason well. i'm thinking to go sort of digital-less, think. (and i study computer engineering, but i don't think that digital should replace paper in every form...)
There is such a thing as digital clutter. You've just moved your clutter from the physical to the digital world. And unless you have a well planned system of organisation and discipline it can can get even more out of hand.
I have digital clutter but the great thing about it is every thing I scan my camera optically recognizes the text so I can search by text. Even if I can't remember where I saved a particular image, the search feature has yet to fail me, all I have to do is remember some unique phrase or word in the document that I took a picture of and it finds it or at least narrows the search results down to a manageable number to manually review. Also my digital clutter is always backed up and if I accidentally throw something away (i.e. delete it) I can still recover it in 30 days and I don't have to go digging through the waste bin to do so. Digital clutter is still WAAAAYYY better than physical clutter.
This is true however, it is still neater in your home and, unlike with paper, searchable. Still makes better sense even if you've "just moved your clutter" to the digital realm. I do agree that one should be organized in the digital world though.
I can relate to Dominic, as we are also a nomadic family, I teach college courses online (basically paperless, for me but students may still buy traditional books) - all my work is on my laptop, including the text books I use for my classes. However, once he started to talk about the carbon footprint (well, mostly he focused on resources used to create paper based on our estimated usage), it would have been more relevant or persuasive if we compared that carbon footprint with the footprint of our electronic devices. If we compare the average number of devices we own, and compare that to say one year of paper consumption, then maybe that would be a good comparison if paper consumption has a greater footprint. But the manufacturing and power consumption, and e-waste produced could in fact, outweigh paper consumption (that's an emprical question we could look up). One could still travel and see the world, as you don't have to bring every book with you that you own. Having electronic devices can interfere with longform reading, though a dedicated ereader can help. Another aspect is that we assume the technology of our documents will remain constant, but file structures or types might change, we may move from PDFs, .docs to another new format, which will all need to be updated/converted, etc., will libraries suffer data loss in the coming decades? Many of us might "own" digital books that have digital rights management (DRM) but what if a company suddenly goes belly up, what happens to those ebooks stored in the cloud? Do we really own them if they are essentially locked to an ecosystem? You can trade, sell, give away your traditional book, but what about an e-book that an Amazon or Barnes and Noble 'owns' the DRM? Digitizing all of our books is one step, but digital maintenance is another story. So much to be unraveled here, and this TED talk only scratches the surface but can start an interesting discussion and more research. Cheers!

Yes, I agree with everything you said, Dominic. And there are endless reasons to go as much paperless as possible. Paper books will only last a finite number of years. But electronic correspondence and electronic books will last forever. Now I love Amazon Kindle books. But I would have to drag around a Semi-truck to carry all the Kindle books on my Tablet. Years ago, I threw away a ton of Technology books that became obsolete. To have electronic books has all the advantages imagines, except only one. With paper books I can have more than one open at the same time when I want to make a quick glance between them to verify the wording. You can't do that with electronic books unless you have more than one electronic device. One more advantage in electronic books. Electronic books have the capability to have Multi-media, Animation, Hyperlinks to external sources directly in the book itself. You can't do that with paper books and you never will. And frankly the feel of a Moldy, Smelly book that is literally falling apart in my hands is NOT a tactile sensation I appreciate.
Going digital was the key to my organization. Before ipads and phones, I would have different notebooks per term and per subjects and by midterms, I already lost my prelims notes. Digital has also the benefits of searchability and archivability. Also, physical paper take actual space, which can clutter up a tiny apartment real quick. Digital is becoming more and more viable even on low space devices due to cheaper online storage and stronger connections. Even if that's not the case, ssds has completely ushered in cheap hdd and traditional hard drives with high capacities. So going paperless is not just good for the environment but also for your sanity, space real estate and even finances (cheaper ebooks, and even free in some scenarios).

I am finding a way to convince my lecturers to change the way of assignment submission. In addition, I went through 2 of my semesters doing reports and assignments without visiting the library. I found my sources digitally and they are much easier to be found. Personally, I had eliminated the use of toilet paper at all cost. Water is really enough.
I tried to go as paperless. But for me being on the tablet so much hurts my eyes. I can only go paperless with my documents. Ipads can be pretty distracting especially if one is trying to do some serious reading. I love journaling and writing things down in cursive. I love drawing and calligraphy. I'm trying to reduce my paper usage as much as I could.
With digital you can change information quicker. Things can be updated on an ongoing basis. I'm not convinced tablets are greener anyway. They leave four times the carbon footprint as paper.
Objects like books are infused with my memories of my now grown children. I look forward to someday holding my grandchildren in my lap with the same books their parents held. I even marked, noted, and highlighted some of them. It's a record of our intellectual and spiritual journey as a family (particularly because we educated our children at home). I'd be happy to go paperless with work documents, receipts, records. But our books? That would be a loss. Some objects are so connected to joyful memories, I can't imagine disposing of them, even if they lose all meaning and end up at the thrift store after I am gone. Kindle is handy, but it's not the same as reading a book with a pen in my hand.
His idea is great but he does not mention some important points: living without paper releases a huge space in your office or bedroom, you can put something that really matters where the papers were; paperless does not accumulate dust, there is no clutter to find something, in the cloud just search some bill or document and get the answer in seconds; Do you like to read magazines and newspapers? read online and if you like something, save in favorites, so you have saved but without taking up space in your room, among other ideas that could be explored.
I guess the point here is that it’s a branch of minimalism or Zero Waste: you can’t go 100% all the time. It can never be perfect. Go paperless as much as you can. Though I know it’s not possible everywhere and for everyone (especially for us who live in third-world countries-which is also the reason why electronic money and transactions cannot be made 100%). For those who say that technology distracts you, I’d just like to remind you that one can discipline oneself instead of complaining. Practice self control. Getting continuous notifications on an electronic device is the opposite of freedom. Paper has it weaknesses but it’s sustainable compared to all electronic devices that people replace every 2 years. People will use less paper in the future but it will remain a good medium to learn and have a connection to the physical world away from the digital clutter.

Yeah but one would still be dependent on charging time of the digital device, electricity, storage clouds etc. Which are not available every time, every where or are available at some cost. So it would be safe to print (preserve) important stuffs but going towards lesser paper is a welcome step. (In future if we would have free electricity and internet that would bring more freedom towards going paperless). Another thing is that, by having the power to quickly access the information in seconds, we may rely on that device(source) too much. Which may hamper our creative and innovative thinking. We must also be in a practice of enhancing unparalleled capabilities of our body and mind (memory) which are far more powerful tools that ever existed.
I keep hearing William Wallace, Braveheart! 😊 But I'm about to go paperless! Just bought a document scanner. I've been using Drive for years and using the scan function on my Phone's camera. Gadgets have plastics plus the case we use... Plus the hardboxes.chargers.. We usually change phones over few years... It's still pollution. By doing this we create an unsafe environment esp in the ocean ..papers bio degrade... Resolved by planting more trees. And the delivery packaging too...

@@Zoobie16 nice objection ✅😆 In the arabic history there is a story about a theft who stole a big ship and stole scientest's notebook then the scientest try his best and big the theft to bring back his notebook ,"what the point if all your knoledg just in a book ?!! " theft sayed . After that the scientest aswer to keep all information he studyed in his memory only . It's happend befor 2 or 3 centuries so that was the only option but now we can save all data in a storagcloud . Thx for your reading 😅.

One thing that I would like to go paperless in is MAIL. I get so much junk mail in my mailbox daily. I would like all of this to go away. It makes life hard to keep shredding daily.
Bc paper’s doesn’t require electricity or updates or planned obsoleting of parts. Tht books are just straight up tangible also younger generations might detour from using them altogether meaning the decline in true knowledge in specific fields of hands on subjects tht required not just read information but how to physically perform hand on tasks. I still believe printing presses of papered information and machined firearms is what makes independent industries in the USA great.

Nope, I don't concur. I love writing in my diary and also I sometimes write down quick notes on a paper. They're becoming digital then later but for the instance it's on paper. Also, this guy should make the honest counter calculation of much power he consumes for all his digital work, and that his devices had been produced once and so on. Less paper is definitely worth to work on, being completely paperless is not freedom, it's a nightmare and a cultural impoverishment.
I think "paperless" is not meant to be taken 100% literally. He even admits that he still possesses 17 printed books. It should be taken in a much broader sense, as in "what can be passed from paper to digital without interfering with a greater factor, should be." An example of a greater factor would be your love for writing in your diary, which you value as more important factor than reducing your consumption and need for paper or the practicability of digital. But there are many cases which lack a greater factor, and where the practicability of digital takes over the need for paper. You are right about him omitting to compare the environmental cost of producing and consuming paper with the environmental cost of producing and consuming electricity and electronic devices. He only talks about the environmental cost of paper.
But it's not only about books etc... i could go paperless (but i love paper), but if I would like to live as "nomad" I would still have my musical instruments. And the same for other things... it's more about passions than paper...

You can still read words etched on rock thousands of years before. Wonder someone would decipher your cloud based documents after something bad happens to this world. Even paper stands a poor chance. Dominic, what matters is simplicity and the product chain of the device you use. I can write with ink and quill and I don’t require genius like Jobs or Gates to help me scribble and keep a track of what I scribble. Any device you use, which is complicated and involves several people and corporations to render it work, has a very minimum shelf life.
We will not become completely paperless the presentation should be more oriented towards less paper. Because their are security breaches which can leak sensitive data.
Certainly not free from an electric bill, cloud service and network provider. Paper tech doesn't become obsolete like VHS , floppy disk, CD, DVD, and Flickr. As you have no means to produce your own digital system, you are completely dependent on someone else's digital system, and of course, the power and bandwidth to run it. You're also subject to your data being mined at your expense in someone else's digital system. This is not freedom.
Your point is that he is not free because he depends on others and society for his devices, digital systems, electricity, and bandwith, because he cannot produce them himself. If you use paper, you also depend on others and society for your paper and books, because you cannot produce them yourself. So it doesn't make sense to bring up the fact that he cannot produce his digital system himself. His point is that with digital data, you have "more freedom" than with paper in the areas that he talked about. He never said that you would gain complete freedom, be totally self-sufficient and not depend on anyone else.

Oh, plus you dont have to worry about a dead battery or an OS update ruining everything. I'm in education, its scientifically proven people retain knowledge better reading a paper book vs a tablet.
Google has encrypted their internal network and storage. Also, their is too much information, the government would not snoop on you unless they had a reason to. So unless you start emailing people about terrorists plots the government could not care less about you.
Whether you like it or not, you are being observed from the powers above regardless if you are paperless or not. Your phone, Credit Card, Toll Bridges, your auto license plate, day to day transactions and the list goes on. Storing your personal documents in the cloud will just add a drop in the ocean. Your files are already in the cloud by companies you deal with including banks, government and others.

There is no economical substitute for durable corrugated boxes. Paper by the way is a renewable resource. We can grow more trees faster to cut down for paper use because of new advances in the forestry technology. Paper can also be recycled.

I have lived paperless since 1996 and I got my first digital scanner. that's 25 years ago!!

Nice idea, but lets not forget the problem of e-waste. Buying a new tablet every 4 or 5 years does effect the environment in a bad way too.
Compared to the paper you used in that 5-year period? Yeah. Id rather buy one every 5 years or so.

Amazon's eBook format is proprietary, so many won't be going down that route: locked into their ecosystem.

Objects like books are infused with my memories of my now grown children. I look forward to someday holding my grandchildren in my lap with the same books their parents held. I even marked, noted, and highlighted some of them. It's a record of our intellectual and spiritual journey as a family (particularly because we educated our children at home). I'd be happy to go paperless with work documents, receipts, records. But our books? That would be a loss. Some objects are so connected to joyful memories, I can't imagine disposing of them, even if they lose all meaning and end up at the thrift store after I am gone. Kindle is handy, but it's not the same as reading a book with a pen in my hand.
His idea is great but he does not mention some important points: living without paper releases a huge space in your office or bedroom, you can put something that really matters where the papers were; paperless does not accumulate dust, there is no clutter to find something, in the cloud just search some bill or document and get the answer in seconds; Do you like to read magazines and newspapers? read online and if you like something, save in favorites, so you have saved but without taking up space in your room, among other ideas that could be explored.
I guess the point here is that it’s a branch of minimalism or Zero Waste: you can’t go 100% all the time. It can never be perfect. Go paperless as much as you can. Though I know it’s not possible everywhere and for everyone (especially for us who live in third-world countries-which is also the reason why electronic money and transactions cannot be made 100%). For those who say that technology distracts you, I’d just like to remind you that one can discipline oneself instead of complaining. Practice self control. You don’t eat every food you see, don’t buy everything on sale, nor go all the way with every woman that revs your libido (especially for men). SELF CONTROL GUYS. SELF CONTROL.
Thousands of years ago, people were skeptical about not memorizing religious chants and stories passed down from generation to generation and putting them down on paper, but look at us thousands of years later: we don’t memorize long strings of data anymore. Almost everything is written down on paper. Many years ago, people were like, “Memorize the whole story. Don’t write it down ‘cause water, fire, animals, elements and whatchamacallit can destroy it.”
By the way, technology can be “recycled.” Devices can be taken apart and reused to save time, energy, cost and labour.

Getting continuous notifications on an electronic device is the opposite of freedom. Paper has it weaknesses but it’s sustainable compared to all electronic devices that people replace every 2 years. People will use less paper in the future but it will remain a good medium to learn and have a connection to the physical world away from the digital clutter.
What about eye strains and health issues caused for going digital?

Sure, we should be smart about how we use paper. However, I'd like to talk about the environmental footprints of this guy's lifestyle.
What if there is no electricity?
Yeah but one would still be dependent on charging time of the digital device, electricity, storage clouds etc. Which are not available every time, every where or are available at some cost. So it would be safe to print (preserve) important stuffs but going towards lesser paper is a welcome step. (In future if we would have free electricity and internet that would bring more freedom towards going paperless).
Another thing is that, by having the power to quickly access the information in seconds, we may rely on that device(source) too much. Which may hamper our creative and innovative thinking. We must also be in a practice of enhancing unparalleled capabilities of our body and mind (memory) which are far more powerful tools that ever existed.

Gadgets have plastics plus the case we use... Plus the hardboxes.chargers.. We usually change phones over few years... It's still pollution. By doing this we create an unsafe environment esp in the ocean ..papers bio degrade... Resolved by planting more trees. And the delivery packaging too...

After that the scientest aswer to keep all information he studyed in his memory only .
It's happend befor 2 or 3 centuries so that was the only option but now we can save all data in a storagcloud .

Awesome presentation. I make it my goal for 2017 to go paperless. You' re right, the next generation will be paperless and they won' t understand why our generation waited so long to change. Message to them, it' s all the paranoia and propaganda that is slowing things down.

Bc paper’s doesn’t require electricity or updates or planned obsoleting of parts. Tht books are just straight up tangible also younger generations might detour from using them altogether meaning the decline in true knowledge in specific fields of hands on subjects tht required not just read information but how to physically perform hand on tasks. I still believe printing presses of papered information and machined firearms is what makes independent industries in the USA great.

Nope, I don't concur. I love writing in my diary and also I sometimes write down quick notes on a paper. They're becoming digital then later but for the instance it's on paper. Also, this guy should make the honest counter calculation of much power he consumes for all his digital work, and that his devices had been produced once and so on.
Less paper is definitely worth to work on, being completely paperless is not freedom, it's a nightmare and a cultural impoverishment.

It should be taken in a much broader sense, as in "what can be passed from paper to digital without interfering with a greater factor, should be."
An example of a greater factor would be your love for writing in your diary, which you value as more important factor than reducing your consumption and need for paper or the practicability of digital.

You can still read words etched on rock thousands of years before. Wonder someone would decipher your cloud based documents after something bad happens to this world. Even paper stands a poor chance. Dominic, what matters is simplicity and the product chain of the device you use. I can write with ink and quill and I don’t require genius like Jobs or Gates to help me scribble and keep a track of what I scribble. Any device you use, which is complicated and involves several people and corporations to render it work, has a very minimum shelf life.

Certainly not free from an electric bill, cloud service and network provider. Paper tech doesn't become obsolete like VHS , floppy disk, CD, DVD, and Flickr. As you have no means to produce your own digital system, you are completely dependent on someone else's digital system, and of course, the power and bandwidth to run it. You're also subject to your data being mined at your expense in someone else's digital system. This is not freedom.

Your phone, Credit Card, Toll Bridges, your auto license plate, day to day transactions and the list goes on. Storing your personal documents in the cloud will just add a drop in the ocean.
