  • I figured it was time to round out the series on alternative forms of communication with a video on streaming radio stations. This has been around since the late 90's and is a really cool and FREE way of getting whatever it is you want to the masses.
My little station is used mostly by old users of the BBS from back in the late 90's, and fans from the overseas version of The Midnight Cafe, but there are always new people that trickle in and check it out from time to time.
You never know what you might here on the station as It plays a rotation of just about everything paranormal as well as some pretty cool royalty free music.
Speaking of music. I'd guess that around 99% of these streaming stations play commercial music and I'd bet a dollar that only about 1% of them actually paid the royalties, but they do so at their own risk. I'm not much for risk taking so I choose to play only what I own or stuff that is free to air, but you can feel free to do your own research on the subject if you choose to start your own station.
Feel free to check out the website, a recreation of the original BBS, and the Radio Station Stream here: em-50.weebly.com/

Shoutcaster myself. Since 2002. Ran an old NSV Shoutcast TV station for years too.
To the consumer, get Winamp and you've already got a ton of free music and talk stations of about every genre at your fingertips. Excellent program. Still the best.

I've always wanted to play with the TV side of it, but never had the bandwidth. If you would be so kind as to describe how the setup is compared to the audio only side of things I think I'd like to give it a try!

@@FarpointFarms Here's a link to a resource page. It's dated but what you would need is still there. It's all beta. Total pain in comparison.
One big difference is you don't use Winamp. You use a different streamer. The .nsv container is finicky and only certain formats can work. Takes alot of prep. Also SCv2 will not accept .nsv as a streaming format, but will work with SCv1.
There's some more. kjtr.114@gmail.com if you want more. I've got some tip and tricks and a good streamer I can send you.

@@FarpointFarms alright, still trying to figure some things out, so it can be ran as "Professional", as possible. (Whatever that means nowadays) lol
But yeah, I'm pretty close to get enough courage to launch. Kinda helps more so that I am coming from a Mix show DJ approach

Love your Videos, we have a lot in common in how we enjoy our hobbies and I often learn something from your videos as well. I also operate a pirate radio station, hosting the feed myself using BroadWave Audio Server and Directore as the stations automation software. The one time cost was minimal in purchasing the BroadWave Streaming software, but it requires very little resources on the PC or Laptop. Takes all of about 3 mins to setup and your live streaming at no monthly cost. The Directore radio automation software is free for limited version or purchased via a donation to the individual that designed it. Directore mimics all the requirements and features of top radio stations, with automated Time announcement, Commercials, playlists, auto rotating playlists, scheduled playback of other media all programmable and even has Live features, like music fade, background music, emergency broadcast clips, Instant one key playback of any file and scheduling months or weeks ahead of time for messages and announcements, so your not tied to your station console to remove expired announcements. I love this Hobby I feel it provides a public service to my community as well. Been trying to catch your Shoutcast livestream, but no luck so far. Keep em Coming....

That Panasonic Toughbook was designed for military use, that's why its so durable ( and can withstand an EMP).
I used to work for the Blind Center of Nevada who had the contract to recycle all the old PCs and laptops from Nellis Airforce base. We used to get truckloads of those things every few months.

Go for it! It's a fun hobby that I tinker with at times. Then let it go on auto pilot for a while. That's the best part. Once it's up and running, you can leave it for ages, then when you get some time, update the jingles, and station id clips, add or remove music or shows, and such. Love it!

Interesting video. I never knew anything about running your own station.
I really miss your live streams. I'm usually working around the home or at the shop working on my trucks in the evenings and I don't know about them until after they are over! I know time is a commodity this time of year, but I hope we can go back to having at least a day notice for the live streams. It's always a great group of people there and we have some good conversations.
Hope to talk to you again soon.

Thanks for all you do. You got me back into CB after 20+ years of being away. But I don't have a base unit and I've been rebuilding my truck for the past few months, so I've been radio silent. I'm looking forward to getting back on the air soon!

Install a capacitance hat on your transmitting antenna to increase range . I'm getting really good range with my stations far better than a couple of miles . I use capacitance hats on my antennas and elevated radials but they're not directly connected to the transmitter but do help in a major way.
