    Ironically, for one of the more outlandish ideas that the Germans came up with, this is one project that quite a lot of design work was done on and at least some parts of the design were undergoing wind tunnel testing when the project was halted by the Soviet advance. The design would have flown but would almost certainly have run into the same issues of landing difficulties that other tail sitting designs of the post war period (Convair Pogo and Lockheed Salmon) encountered. Namely pilot disorientation as the aircraft neared the ground. It would be interesting to know what, if any, methods Focke-Wulf were thinking of using to get round this particular issue.

    • @tonyrusi1978
      @tonyrusi1978 3 роки тому

      I wonder if a self-righting gravity-gradient oriented cockpit was ever considered, so the the pilot would always have proper visual orientation during all phases of flight, including the vertical landing? Now with modern wireless controls, I imagine such a concept is much more doable than in 1944.

    Building my own kit of this at the moment: I approached the Wing attachments slightly differently- I carefully glued the "collars" onto the stub wings when fitting them to the main ring, so that the wings are free to alter their pitch. The result is that you can show it in take-off pitch or in-flight pitch. The collar still acts as a strengthening piece internally though. (I used a drop of Tamiya Extra Thin Quick on the joint internally, and just ensured that it was pressed tight enough for the wing(s) to still rotate.) The rest I will be doing pretty much as suggested. Very nice kit overall. and yours came out very well.

    I've built this kit recently as well. Had the same issues. I left those little collars off the propeller/wings and didn't glue them so they could be removed as well as rotating. For the join at the top of the rotating section I added extensions inside to give a stronger join. An easy kit to build of a subject I've wanted for decades.

    @garfieldsmith332 5 років тому +11

    Great job. Looks like a nice kit to have. One wonders if this thing could really fly. It would have been an awesome sight as the engines may have created a ring of fire around the fuselage as it flew in forward flight.

    • @ChristianMcAngus
      @ChristianMcAngus 5 років тому

      It might have been able to take off, but it would have almost impossible to land. Its very dangerous trying to land a more conventional tail sitter aircraft, which is why research into them was soon abandoned. Trying to land this thing would have been even worse.

    • @garfieldsmith332
      @garfieldsmith332 5 років тому +3

    Just got my kit from Andy’s - I’m building it as Red Skull’s escape craft from “Captain America: The First Avenger” using Hydra logo decals I found on line.
    Appreciate the insight to the circular rings as reinforcements for wing stubs. However, I don’t know why Amusing Hobby included turbines for the engines. True ramjets have no moving parts and would be largely see-through except for the flame holder. I’m opting to forgo the turbines.

    Almost unbelievably the Focke-Wulf factory had started wind tunnel testing on this design using models. Several items came out of the test. First, because of the state of metallurgy, the rotation of the wings had to be capped at 250 rpm (on the full size version) which inturn, limited the top speed to just over 540kph or 400 mph. So it would not have been an outstanding advantage.
    One other point was that the engines weren't turbojets as on the Me262. They were to be Ramjets, which had to be spun up to ignition by RATO rockets mounted outboard of the nacelles, and jettisoned at takeoff.

    Nice model, but I think in reality the rotary engines should have been pointing their thrust much more forward. The angle of the engines on this model is unbelievable (The engines on the wingtips would have to turn at well over supersonic speeds, which they wouldn't be able to withstand). In this idiot configuration, the plane would not have been capable of horizontal maneuvering flight. This is a historical mistake of the kit manufacturer.

  • @petercavellini3232
    @petercavellini3232 5 років тому

    The thing is, it never flew, it never had a chance of flying, on paper it would sound possible, it would never fly because all the materials required were in short supply, who’d you train and how long for to fly it, it was a paper exercise at best , and, where did all these plane and Rocket scientists go...?🤔

    This plane looks a little bit strange.
    But it was really flown near the end
    of WW ll but only in Testflights.
    It was planed as a interceptor
    aircraft to start from a field or
    any similar place like a rocket.
    After nearby any german airfield
    was destroyed, this was a clever
    idea for the third reich, to win back
    air sovereignty.
    But it came to late to change
    anything.
    After the war the plane was
    rebuilt by the US Airforce
    as Lockheed XVF - 1 and
    Convair XFY - 1. 😇
