I'll try buckwheat next year, the phosphorus aspect I really like. This year is the first time I've ever done a cover crop and I love it. I used what I could get locally, black eyed peas (beans) from the supermarket, cheap and plentiful. They grow really fast and now all my expired beds are full of green manure. One row is for my potatoes so I'll chop and drop those leaving the roots in ground, then cover with compost and shredded leaves, by Spring it should be super soil. I enjoyed seeing how you turned it under as that I will do in my other areas.👍🏻

Glad it was helpful! I was really impressed at how quickly Buckwheat grew!

🤔 I've never considered trying to germinate the dry beans and peas from the supermarket. Thanks!

What time of year did you put in the beans? What zone are you in? Did the frost kill? Thank you!

I noticed the brand of buckwheat you used. I had bought that brand of sugar snap peas and climbing limas. Limas are currently filling out, but, I only had about 60% germination. The sugar snaps were not fit to eat as pods so I let them go to maturity and shelled them, they were mediocre as plain shelled peas. Threw the rest of the pea seeds in the trash.

Great info! Especially about not letting the BW go to flower. I have been wanting to grow BW as a cover but had trouble finding seeds at this time of the year

It's almost too pretty to cut! I'll give it a try!

Hi Rick, I’m here in Utah County also. It was suggested that I interplant buckwheat with my annuals when it’s warm enough in May. But then you’d have to meticulously cut around each stalk when they flower. I also grow cut flowers and someone said I could grow Dutch clover with my cut flowers. What do you think? I tried thermal compost piles and they were a lot of work for so little result. Ideas?

Do you know what would be a good cover crop for fall/ winter to add nitrogen? My plants did not do well this year and some of the leaves were a bit yellow.

vetch, winter peas and clover will all be good for adding nitrogen.

When do you plant clover for a 6b zone? Is the cut back process same as buckwheat?@@StoneyAcresGardening
