Gary Mauer! One of the best voices you'll ever hear sing this role, period. This video is really cool because it was shot with two cameras by audience members, and then edited together to make a multi-cam show. Plus Gary is performing with his wife as Christine, Elizabeth Southard!
This was their final performance (at the time, Gary would return to do a brief stint on Broadway in 2007) and it's a really great show with a very strong cast. Enjoy!
I know we have created a nice atmosphere and all here, but if that one person wont stop coughing I 'm gonna throw hands😁
The cell phones going off too!! Sheesh! I saw Moulin Rouge a couple weeks ago and there’s a very intimate moment with one of the main characters at a very very vulnerable moment in the show…., and a cell phone went off. The way I wanted to yell “Turn your effing phone off you idiot!!” It amazes me how people can be so ignorant of theatre etiquette.
37:44 you can’t convince me that isn’t Beth smiling at her husband 🥰
Love when actresses who play "Christine" scream in horror after unvealing the mask off him. Beth's performance..... WOW!!! She is terrified as hell.
43:46 and 1:54:11
that was meg discovering piangi
Gary Mauer and his wife, Elizabeth, are so awesome, primarily because they are married in real life.
Gary Mauer is a vocal giant and one of the very best performers of this role!
Definitely. My first and favorite Phantom!
I have a visceral and vivid memory of his first notes… “insolent boy, this slave of fashion.” It has become a core memory. And I was fortunate to attend a matinee and experience Beth alongside him as well. So so grateful I got to see them perform live.
Taking the words right out of my mouth. I saw him as my first Phantom at the Atlanta Fox Theatre back in 2005 opposite Marie Danvers. Oof that “INSOLENT BOY ..” made me jump nearly out of my seat higher than the first bombastic notes of the overture! Looking back I love that delivery. Especially cause if you think about it it’s like the rolling timpani that leads into his first line is his rising jealousy and hate against Raoul. LOVE. IT. Gary’s Phantom was so extra vocally.
He’s so perfect as Erik. His upper range is otherworldly
Gary Mauer's Phantom sent me on a career path. It was then I knew I wanted to do this for a living and strive to be the vocalist he was. I'm 32 now and I owe a lot to Gary and how he inspired me to sing this style.
That is amazing. I hope you get to tell him this someday. He and Beth have both inspired me to keep striving and singing as well. ❤
The phantom of opera with Gary mauers
39:37 wow that was flawless! I think he hits that note the best of any Phantom I’ve heard!
I agree. Have never seen anyone top that IMO.
I agree 👍 💯 👏
he gave her a box from Tiffany's during curtain call. Dude knows how to floss
44:12 my last brain cell when I have to do state testing:
For me Gary Mauer's performance is the best one at showing all the layers of the phantom emotions. Some performers make him too soft, and I love the fact that even when he is soft here, there is an evident rage that is right beneath the surface. As someone said, his Wandering Child is the perfect example of this, but you can fell throughout the play how he struggles to control that anger and I find it fascinating.
I 100% agree! He’s angry enough yet gentle enough too. Great portrayal!
I was born on this day. It's Fun for me to think that while I was just born, this happened
"Filming is strictly prohibited." Underrated
I saw him as my first Raoul on Broadway, and you can definitely hear Hugh Panaro’s influence on his Phantom. I got to see him again as Phantom during this tour, the theater I went to did a multi million dollar renovation to accommodate it too.
1:40:34 this is hands down my favorite version of Wandering Child ever. The way that Gary starts off soft and soothing then switches into a powerhouse when he says “You Resist” no one does it quite like Gary. Also the way Gary and Beth mesh so seamlessly is perfection you can tell they have practiced this song together multiple times to get it perfect. I have had a few performances of Wandering Child that came close but can never quite top this performance. Simply spectacular!
I think if I could only ever watch just one Phantom ever again,it would be Gary Mauer. He pours his heart and emotion into every scene with the vocals to match. I wish there was more performances of him out there. He’s just amazing!
You know what I’ve seen him soooo many times as Raoul and never phantom and after seeing this I want to. He had the most consistently strong Raoul of all the ones I’ve seen
Before Ramin, we had Gary. I would love for Gary to do the role again if ever Phantom returns to the US
id love for gary BUSEY to play phantom sometime. his tragic past fits the character
This is really awesome - Gary Mauer and his wife, Elizabeth Southard as the Phantom and Christine.
If I could give this a thousand likes I would. Just something so special watching Gary and Beth together knowing they are married. So grateful to whoever recorded this ❤️
Beth has a gorgeous voice - very rounded and full. Great to hear!
A lot more strength than most Christine’s I’ve heard. Wish she could have been allowed to do the London cadenza at the end of TOM, cause I bet she would have killed it!
Such a dynamic couple Gary and Beth are❤️
I love many Phantom actors for many different reasons, but Gary will always be near and dear to my heart. He was the first I saw live, and to this day I always love listening to him sing.
Beth is a sweetheart!!❤️❤️
I love Gary Maurer’s voice😍
Omg - I know what I’ll be doing the next two hours. Thank you SO MUCH!
Enjoy!! :D
@@lesmiserablesfantome-ygood1922 I totally did, and will be watching again. Hands down one of the best overall Phantoms, with such strong vocals, perfection! His portrayal and acting style are so amazing. To see it start to finish, and with his wife, I could go on and on....thanks again, you have truly made my night. Loved the two camera angles and the curtain call too!
I want this entire performance tattooed on my forehead I LOVE IT SO MUCH OMG
Best Phantom ever- those vocals are soaring!
One of the best Phantoms ever.
So glad I finally get to see them both after having watched Club Christine so many times with Beth in it.
Gary always mays me emotional n gives me chills hes phoemnal all are magnificent awwww bravooooooo
My hats off to the people who recorded this! Phenomenal job! :)
Wow, Gary is damn great!!❤️❤️
Oh my gosh, this is so amazing. I saw him on tour around this time.
Wow, I have no words, his voice is perfect, especially for that role
Please continue to post these rare recordings! You are amazing! I know it must take you a lot of time and we all appreciate it so much! :)
What a cast! Thanks for posting.
God I miss this US Tour. 😢
Wishing hoping and praying for a touring revival of this version of the show. And still hoping (with a fools hope) that we eventually get a Parisian Phantom Production!!
Amazing! I've seen this before but rewatched it and wow! I fell in love with the cast all over again. Thank you for uploading these!
You can FEEL their chemistry!
His Soar is the Best ever.....
This is the BEST bootleg I've seen on UA-cam! THANKS ! Also , love Carlotta here.😘
37:39 Omg when she leans in to kiss him and he pulls away😍
Thanks for all u do keep going
2:04:24 I LOVE that she wanted to go to him. They are a married couple in real life and I ship Eristine (Erik/Christine) forever and always.
Can we talk about the Husband?Baritone in Il Muto? he is the GOAT
oh my god i loved him!
@@xpa-beads501 milking every second he was out there and the audience was eating him up
5:12 BrO !I would've had a heart attack!
ok im like 20 minutes in and I am LOVING Carlotta
I’ve never liked Carlotta, to be honest. In fact, the only two characters I love/care about from the show are Erik (Phantom)/Christine. Eristine forever!
This cast is on fire lmao
You tell me cam Mack saw this and said “this looks like it should be changed”
Well yknow
Lining his pockets matters more cuz capitalism
@@williammclean5897 I know, but I wish that cam Mack would take the original (keep everything the same) but just shred some cheese into updated technology. Like make the boat blue tooth instead of radio controlled, add more pyro to Ruthie 2, update lighting, you know things that enhance the show not change things fully(like the new proscenium and chandelier in London)
I 100% agree!
Gary's my first and favorite Phantom. The passion and pathos he pours into every sung syllable is magnificent, and the fact that his wife is Christine is just icing on the cake for this Phan 🥮🍰🧁
Meg sound so mature , you won't tell if that's Meg or Mama Giry.
I have always liked the desk and chair in the manager’s office. I wonder where I could get one of each?
At 2:06:55, that can is so powerful.
1:23:23 Red Death
1:43:03 FLASHBANG!
YESSS 🔥 🔥 🔥
1:43:03 OBAAAAMAAAAA
LOL
Ok, this is my very first time listening to Gary. And I hope he stands up to my Michael! After I watch, I'll give my critique. My only problem with some "Eriks" is that they are too "operatic." I mean after all it is called "The Phantom of the Opera" and not the "Opera Ghost of the Opera." Some of the phantoms can be and have been FAR too stiff and not relaxed and "shadowy" enough as the phantom should be. So, he's got BIG shoes to fill in my eyes. ... Ok, here I go.....
how was he?
@@brxzbze - Well, what I CAN say for sure is that his voice is NO match for Michael's but he was fairly decent and that's still better than most. Although, my standards are probably inhumanely unkind. But yes, he did well. 🙂
@@lLadyAszneth I know you’ve probably already seen it but if you want a phantom that isn’t operatic, Ramon Karimloo is a fantastic choice in the 25th anniversary recording. John Owen Jones is also really solid.
@@thewannabegamer9 - See now, I am glad someone else gets it. Ramin's voice is FAB and was paired for the BIG Albert Hall (slightly modified) show. It is, however; precisely the kind of voice that JOJ has that DOES feel too harsh and operatic. I mean I won't - Hell- can't knock the man's talent but he wouldn't not have been on my list of audition callbacks, unless he could tone it down a bit.
His voice is no match for Michael’s? I mean, I grew up loving and crying to the OBC and OLC soundtracks, for sure… but Gary is pretty incomparable. 😊 I suppose that is the beautiful, subjective part of art, though, right? We can all have our favorites, for so many reasons.
Do they take breaks between the two acts? And for how long?
Typically theaters have an intermission of about 15 minutes in between the first and second act.
They were married by this time weren’t they?
Man! Can't hear the lyrics at all in Prima Donna! Why they make it like that where you can't even hear what they're saying?
Point of no return seems to be too fast imo
1:05:01 I'M BATMAN!!!
02:06:59 caAaAaAan
😂
Since I ship Erik (Phantom)/Christine, I am so glad that Christine wanted to go to Erik. I hate that Raoul stopped her, though.
Stop coughing for goodness sakes!!!😂
Their voices are miscast for the roles but their chemistry as a married couple helps their performance but only a bit before their voices just sound obnoxious
Out of curiosity what makes you say their voices are miscast? They sound fine to me
I humbly disagree. Gary is absolutely perfect vocally for this rose.
@@williammclean5897Their voices aren’t rich or operatic enough for the two leads. Gary also is a better cast as Raoul than a Phantom.
