This was a particularly revealing piece. You never do think about that analog purist you stumble on at the festival early bird party; what they put up with to give the audience the truest version of their artistry. Reminded me of that interview Jeff Mills gave for RBMA where he talked about sink showers, wearing 1 set of clothes for months, and lugging around crates of wax like a ball and chain/wife. Marie earns the title Working Class Woman thru blood, sweat, and insomnia. Give support as they do for you. And bless you for getting a shot of her bookshelf, RA!
She’s a warrior, every track she creates is so deep. I’ve rarely felt so connected with sounds someone produced, her universe really touches me (also true for Essaie pas). Thank you Marie, I was at We Love Green and you put on a great show. Bisous de Paris !
i was last year in ceremonia festival in mexico, and marie was playing at the same time that aphex twin. I see marie, because she is the queen, his music is insane!
Really enlightening, and read after seeing this she's retired from playing live with machines. Big commitment and looks like she's done some amazing work, shame I never caught her live show!
A beautiful, smart, hard-working woman dedicated to her passion. I hope you stay safe, Marie, and you’re happy ❤️ Thank you for your music. Hope to see you one day
I have never felt so much like an artist was casting a literal spell over the audience as much as when I saw Marie in Vancouver last year. She's a real one.
Many people think it’s the best job in the world, and sure it can be a lot of fun, but traveling all the time ain’t easy, it takes a toll on you. Props to all those artists and managers who can do it gracefully.
Great video - pretty brutally honest about the demands of being a performer and using lots of gear. One thing that struck me was the sleep issue - which I think Laidback Luke tackles pretty well by always sticking to a time zone that he aligns with even in different time zones. that allows him to build consistency with his body clock and helps with that aspect. He has kids too, hence the reason for trying to keep that consistency when communicating with him. He's got good advice for the touring DJs/performers. Hope she doesn't get burnt out as she seems like an interesting developing artist who really plays live. Great stuff.
when gear breaks or songs get lost forever, its such a heartbreaking and emotional moment that requires time to grieve. I can't imagine that happening right when you get on stage. RIP 707 patches.
@@tomaspalmariello7911 you can't back up TR-707 patterns to sysex. It's literally whatever's saved to the AA batteries on the 707 or to a roland M64C memory cartridge. I've literally gone through and meticulously written down patterns/settings/etc. for various drum machines in case internal batteries fail or if a sysex file fails for whatever reason. One of the many potential issues with playing with live gear.
The book in her bag by Gabor Mate, “When the Body Says No”, is really incredible. All his work is. He allowed me to feel like I was experiencing normal emotions for my situation. I would highly recommend his books if you experience stress or addiction or compulsive behavior. I wouldn’t just put myself out there and say this about myself for the fuck of it. I hope that I can point someone in the right direction of the healing that I experienced.
Love these Between The Beats videos! Really interesting insights into the artists and industry (And on a personal note) it scares me and motivates me in equal measure about my own DJ career haha... fingers crossed 🤞🏾🙏🏾 TØTEM
Fascinating , pour moi elle incarne la définition du mot cool. Le talent , l'attitude , son approche organique à son gear et sa façon puriste et noble de rendre justice à la musique qu'elle crée et qu'elle performe live sans filet de sécurité . Captivante
Oh no, really?! I have just discovered her as an artist literally one month ago… but she is going to create more music, right? It’s just the touring? ☹️
Marie, the scene in the hotel-lobby! You male me cry, even I know loneliness without travellin! I somimes, haha, often think, I dont k ow, where I belong.. Marie
Marie relies on technology, she needs to treat her operation like an IT operation. She needs a backup of everything: 1 primary, 1 backup of every device, every cable. And file backups of all her beats and rhythms, sounds, and anything else saved on those machines. I get that it's a lot of stuff to carry, but it's insanity to take 1 copy of 7 or 9 machines and expect them to work perfectly while shipping them all over the world. Put the primary kit in 1 bag, and the backup kit in a different bag, so hopefully both don't get lost.
@Marie, love your vibe, but I see your pain in gear and travel. My idea; Shrink the set to something that fits in carry-on. I love the digitakt, digitone TR-8 setup with a kaoss-pad. For midi-mother or track storage you can use an APC or a laptop with Ableton That will fit carry-on, so no stress for stuff that has to travel in the belly of the beast.
3:33 No sound...Sounds like me trying to play Trump speeches at a Gay pride parade… Because NASA told me to...which of you qwaynes took away my Bluetooth?

I am so moved by this portrait. The devotion is just off the scale. big love
Never stop making these RA :)
Mikey Wallis we get one about ever 2 years

Massive respect for Marie, seems so stressful with all the gear and sound issues. Thanks for RA for putting out another quality doc.
This was such a solid piece, love to see RA is still making these mini docs
She works to be a winner. This was awesome 😎

I'm so thankful for this minidoc. I love marie so much... and I feel like she's going through a pretty transformative time in her career right now.
Yet another reason Marie continues to amaze me! This was quite moving & poignant throughout ... Thanks all involved ❤️🙏❤️
Oh my, this was almost painful to watch. The struggle is real! Massive respect!

“Give me the time that I have and shut the fuck up.”
Boss mood.
This needs to be archived in the library of congress or something. She's incredible
idk why but my eyes teared up like 3 times watching this

patches can get lost, shit happens.
sysex is your friend for backing up patterns and settings!

@@Ray_Koren had this Problem too. I'm glad i sold my 707. Rytm is the real thing

Huge love and respect, Marie!
This was amazing and complicated. I was interested in her work before. Now I'm even more so. Thank you 🙏🏾
"Adieux au Dancefloor" is one of the songs that plays the most here 💘
I was happy to see Marie Davidson at Between The Beats by the Resident Advisor
she dedicate her life

No shortcuts. Badass 🚀🚀🚀
Saw her at Field Day in London and there were technical issues throughout. Was really bummed, but it all makes sense after seeing this though
Nah. There are always technical sound issues at Field Day, no matter who plays!
Amazing performance at Nachtdigital. Unique and captivating in all the right ways. Good luck with your future projects Marie!
Emily Blunt meets Lana Del Rey meets Techno. Stumbled upon Marie last night, and now a big fan!
Very candid. Welcome to the real.... I'll be a fan for life Marie.
just a definition of perfect imperfection

incredible.
I'd be really amazing to see a feature on Silverio from Mexico. That guy is something else!

Oh no, really?! I have just discovered her as an artist literally one month ago… but she is going to create more music, right? It’s just the touring? ☹️
Love you Marie
By far the best Between the lines yet!! Powerful to say the least.
Yooo that’s my friend and I at 2:33!
love youuuu
she's a real artist
Damsel in Distress. The best episode by far.
Nice one RA. Raw Marie, CBD for sleeping. It works for me, you should give it a try!
She knows. Trust
Sick doc!!! ❤️❤️❤️

Franz Wilhelm or have a plan b Dj set, just Incase?🧐 very stressful
shes so cute
@11:45 oooof I could not even imagine...
This needs 10x the views it has - far more interesting than some ToobFace reviewing expensive gear.
"Gimme the time I have... Shut the fuck upp!!"
She probably should stop touring for a while and make some clips. Don't want her to break
Why does this feel like it's directed by Mia Hansen-Løve?
Wonder if she works a day job when not on tour.
She doesn't, she's a true artist 24/7
Is this a spoof?
Love.
get overmono and objekt!
Give us Varg2TM

How do you someone uses all hardware? Don't worry they'll let you know.
@@Ray_Koren hey it's all cool. djs, gear, computers whatever. It's just a joke.
❤
Сјајно!!!
Is this a complain(ers) piece?
she's like the slightly better Nina Kraviz?
a lot better. it's live, not a dj lol
17' ??
the first song has a white horse - laid black samble
Half an hour of moaning and reiterating that she uses hardware
.
Marie, if you read this: you’re hot. Also please switch your live sets to Ableton. I will help you if you want.

No sound...Sounds like me trying to play Trump speeches at a Gay pride parade… Because NASA told me to...which of you qwaynes took away my Bluetooth?
Ridiculous lol
That poor girl has to travel all over the world to get paid very well to do the thing she's passionate about. I feel so bad for her.
bourgeoisie hardship is hardship
She seems pretty raw for a for a between the beats. But ok... Let's see it
Goddamn this is bad
Cringe lol
