Probably the best way to modify a staircase in a small house is either an Elevator or Fold Away Stairs (against the wall), We are planning a small house ourselves and are thinking about a Iron Spiral Stair Case going upstairs and a Hidden of Stairway going to the Walk Out Basement. If Zoning would approve only an Elevator , no Stairs I would consider this.
