While big 4 audit grads/apprentices may not make as much in raw terms as magic circle corporate lawyers, in a lot of ways we have more varied career progression opportunities. I think the big 4 is a brilliant foundation to a wide host of careers, from industry accounting roles -> CFO, private practice up to partner, management consulting, corporate finance/high finance and wider corporate business management/entrepreneurialism. Law in a lot of ways is more limited in scope. You either remain in private practice or go into industry. You would have the opportunity to also move into corporate finance, but I think your day to day role is less applicable to managing your own investment portfolios and businesses. You'd gain more blinkered experience. And consulting I'd assume is equally more difficult to leap into from law. Frankly speaking, it's also easier to land a top role in accountancy than it is within law. The amount of law grads that end up on high streets or small boutiques is much higher in proportion. It doesn't mean that law should be avoided, but in some ways big 4 accounting has a higher risk-managed ROI than law. And at the end of the day, in either profession earning potential and prestige is extremely high and the differential does reduce in senior positions.
Thank you for this. I have only one thing to correct. In London you'll be paid slightly less then anywhere else. Cost of living is of course higher. I was shocked when I moved to Ireland to find out how much higher salaries were here in the same company for the same level. My colleagues left for Germany and Copenhagen at the time for even better compensation.
At the start of the video I do caveat this saying the salaries are for the audit business only. For the other lines of service you can add anywhere up to 20% additional on base salary/bonus.
Wow I am surprised by the pay you get from Big 4. Considering bankers and lawyers who did pretty much the same kind of work, they get paid anything from £40-60k per year straight out of uni plus 50% bonus on top of it.
Love it! This is all really good to know, I hadn't really thought about the hours put in and the hourly rate but as you say, that's only half the story. Can't wait for more content!

Gooday James, when you initially sign on with the firm and you write your first set of board exams, do you then get pushed up to being a senior associate?
The policy is a bit inconsistent between firms, but PwC for example will pay you overtime as an associate. You'll need to get this approved by your Managers etc., and the first '15' hours of overtime are worked for 'free'.
Hi! Could an associate get paid slightly more than the average if his/her cv was really strong/outstanding (having graduated with 1:1 in a top/renowned University, for example)? Firstly congratulations Shanicea! Which department will you be in? Typically, qualified Senior Associates at the BIG 4 in London get ~£47k. For other departments this would be +10% or so. You would be within your rights to request £45k - depending on how formalised they are, they might reject it and stick to the £40k.

Hi mate, another question ;) Any idea what the salary in Big 4 Advisory would be? I've heard it's apparently 1.2x audit, but that was for the US.
It varies by department/BIG 4 firm, but typically the advising/deals have a higher base salary and bonus by 10-25% compared to audit.

They are grads, they get the same grad contract, only experienced hires can negotiate
The base pay for Associates is fixed regardless of experience. They have so many people apply, they can be very strict on this!
