Lhasa, also known as Lhasa and Sunlight City, is a prefecture-level city and capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region. It is an international tourist city with snow-covered plateau and ethnic characteristics in China approved by the State Council. The city has 3 districts and 5 counties under its jurisdiction, with an area of 29,640 square kilometers. As of the end of 2022, the registered population of Lhasa was 581,200.
Lhasa is one of the first national historical and cultural cities. Lhasa is famous for its beautiful scenery, long history, unique customs and strong religious colors. In the seventh century, Songtsen Gampo unified all of Tibet and moved the political center from Shannan to Lhasa. On May 23, 1951, Tibet was peacefully liberated and Lhasa became the capital of the autonomous region. In 1960, the State Council officially approved Lhasa as a prefecture-level city. Lhasa has won the honorary titles of China's Excellent Tourist City, the Most Favorite Tourist City for European Tourists, the National Civilized City, China's Most Secure City, China's Top 200 Charming Cities with Special Characteristics, the World's Top 200 Charming Cities with Special Characteristics, and 2018 China's Top 100 Cities to Travel. On April 2, 2018, it was selected into the list of innovative city construction. In November 2018, it was selected into the top 100 cities in China's comprehensive well-off index.
Lhasa is located in the southwest of China, the central part of the Tibetan Plateau, the north side of the Himalayas, and the valley plain of the middle reaches of the Lhasa River, a tributary of the Yarlung Zangbo River. It is the political, economic, cultural, scientific and educational center of Tibet, and also a holy place of Tibetan Buddhism. The geographical coordinates of Lhasa are 91°06′ east longitude and 29°36′ north latitude. The Lhasa River flows through here and flows into the Yarlung Zangbo River in the southern suburbs. Lhasa is 3,650 meters above sea level and has sunny weather all year round. The annual sunshine time is more than 3,000 hours, and it is known as the "Sunshine City". Lhasa is rich in various resources and has obvious resource advantages compared with other cities in the country and the autonomous region.
In 2023, Lhasa's GDP reached 83.479 billion yuan, an increase of 9.6% over the previous year.
