  • Welcome, today we are back in the Netherlands to join the motor cycle officers from team traffic. This elite motor cycle team has been called in to escort an ambulance from the city of Zoetermeer to the HMC Westend hospital in The Hague, a 18 kilometer trip. We start of in the outskirts of Zoetermeer and head west. This team of officers is specialized in providing high skilled, high speed and very safe escorts for any kind of VIP or emergency vehicle such as an ambulance. It is their job to get the escorted vehicle as fast as possible to its destination without any compromises regarding safety and well being of both the paramedics, the patient on board, as well as other road users. The officers in front take turns in securing every crossroad, roundabout and intersection, as the officer in front of the ambulance instructs his team and informs the driver of the ambulance what is about to come.

      From the ambulance perspective you will see not much except one bike driving directly in front of you over mostly empty roads while you cruise along at a steady pace.
      The ambulances actually do not even go very fast. The streets are free so slow and steady brings them to the hospital in the quickest fashion.

    • @MarijnRoorda
      @MarijnRoorda 6 місяців тому +8

      @@flippah9101 Except, that rarely happens. It has to do with many things, but the law foremost. When a cyclist is hit by a car, the law assumes it's the car drivers fault. Even if it isn't. If the driver of the car wants to take it to court he is allowed, but even if he wins, he still has to pay for 50% of the damage done to the cyclist, and 100% of the damage to his vehicle. He also has to provide evidence himself, since the police doesn't have to. And insurance isn't even going to bother fighting it, they just increase the driver's costs. And if that sounds stupid, its intentional. It makes roads far more safe this way. It also helps that every car driver has been a cyclist during childhood, and more often then not remained one ever since.

    How well do the Dutch people know these situations?
    The thing that amazes me the most is that the police officer, sometimes, just gives a few hand gestures and then speeds on. Is the ambulance, or his colleagues, close enough for people to see that's there more happening -- or do they actually know that they are only looking at an ahead officer, and that the real thing will come soon enough?
    I'm kind of used to the super-dumb German drivers, that might honk at you for stopping at a green light because of an approaching emergency vehicle...

    • @fredschepers5149
      @fredschepers5149 6 місяців тому +8

      Police vehicles and especially motor bikes are part of the Dutch highway code. Police signals are higher in he hierarchy signposting and other rules and regulations.
      So that, plus driving lessons and exams focussed on anticipation makes the difference. Drivers, normally (there are always exceptions) will notice emergency vehicles well ahead and respond to it upfront. Also other driers will make as much space for others to merge in if needed by leaving more space between themselves and others.
      It all about paying attention in one of the most dynamic and dangerous environments in society. Traffic!
      Still accidents happen. Human nature. But most drivers do know what to do. Including cyclists! And there are loads and loads of them in the Netherlands. All road users (from driving lane to footpath) like pedestrians, cyclists, disabled, public transport, emergency vehicles and even funeral and/or military convoys are part of the normal highway code. And the exam is relatively more difficult than a school exam. You need only a few mistakes to fail.
      For the rest it's about how you make traffic part of your cultural behaviour. And that takes decades to get where they are now....
      And superb roads and traffic systems...🤷

    • @Alexzander19736
      @Alexzander19736 6 місяців тому +3

      Not that hard to understand what the traffic police wants you to do, go slow/stop/go/whatever ... And all cars have mirrors. YEAH , mirrors and you can also look over your left shoulder. Yes, i had a good instructor. There are idiots who go speeding behind the ambulance to shorten the missing SECONDS. (For them i would say: Drive alone and smash your car into a tree. YW).
      You'll see what is going on.
      And when you learn how to drive, you also get theory where most of this comes by, police hand signals and what it means.
      Well I got that.
      And hey, counting up the event, police, ambulance, mirror, no emergency after that, OKAY i can go when the light is green. Or whatever the situation is after they are gone.

      Not very well, but in the areas this team is active, they probably have more familiarity, especially in the city center. This particular team is multi-functional: one of their primary roles is to escort foreign dignitaries who are on official visits and similar unusual escorts since The Hague (Den Haag in Dutch) is where all the foreign embassies are located. Obviously ambulance escorts are important too, but they are not why the team exists. To this team these escorts serve the purpose of filling up their down time with training and building up experience with making the sort of split-second decisions they are required to do, so it is a win-win. (Obviously they can also do regular police-work, but they obviously have a specialized skillset that needs maintaining as a group.)
      Kids in the Netherlands already get 'traffic theory' in school around the age of 10-11 with a practical exam where they need to individually and independently cycle a particular route while keeping to traffic situations. While this obviously does not include the official hand signals of police, those are a part of the curriculum for licenses of motorized vehicles. So as a whole, the independence and familiarity with road rules is on a quite high level for underage children in the Netherlands. (But I am not able to judge/compare that to how things are in Germany, who in my experience are very good drivers which I always assumed applied more generally to all road users and related rules, but maybe that's a wrong assumption of mine?)
      For as far bicyclists getting punished for infractions go... they do tend to get away with more, but the really big exceptions to that in my experience are holding a phone while cycling (that's a very expensive lesson, please resist the urge!) and not having adequate lighting at night. While I don't want to say bicyclists running a red or doing dangerous stuff don't get punished, I think it is generally rare for the police to be in the right time and place to witness it, be able to chase them down and corner them, and not be stuck on another more important call already. It is incredibly trivial in the Netherlands for a bicyclist to just hop a curb and go down a pedestrian-only path to disappear into a neighborhood. Scooters and motorcyclists can at times use the same tricks and are also hard to catch despite the engine noise, but for a bicyclist, it is very trivial to just park you bike next to some others and wander off in a matter of seconds. Motorcycles are bigger and bulkier so they stand out more, and are trivially tested by police to have a hot engine, but bicycles are literally EVERYWHERE over here. (But the cyclists in this video are utter idiots for doing what they did and clearly were in no positions to run away had they been stopped.. but they probably knew the police was in no position to stop them, so it worked out? Still idiotic as hell.)

    • @fredschepers5149
      @fredschepers5149 6 місяців тому +2

      It's a rather big city. Peak times all lanes will be full of traffic. But the road system is pretty extended in the Netherlands. One of the best you can drive on. But it's a small country. And certain times it's hell to get through from work to home vv. That's why it's very handy to have bike teams like this.

      For comparison, The Netherlands has a population of 17,7 million, and the size is 41 580 km2. Thats 425,7 people/km2. If that density was applied to Finland, the population would be about 144 million people. About 28,8 times more than in reality.
