  • Some people thought it would never happen but: the BER is finally complete. With a delay of almost 10 years, Berlin’s new airport has officially opened its gates to passengers. The BER was originally designed in 1998 by renowned architects GMP. But is their former vision of a modern airport still up to date? We’ll take you on a tour.

The horizontal is emphasized. Right angles predominate. It seems an update of International Style aesthetics, for example, the walnut provides a warmer sensibility than the geometric steel/glass/concrete chill of many earlier International edifices. Nonetheless, simple functionality is still emphasized. Quite stunning I think.

I live in Germany and one thing that is always screwed up with Germany architecture is the lack of attention to how people move through the spaces. I am from Singapore, home to arguably one of the most awarded airports in the world: Changi. First opened in 1981, the airport architecture is nothing fanciful, and despite constant expansions and upgrading works, still pales in comparison to many grandiose airports today. Even newer terminals constructed more recently at SIN kept to simple, boxy designs not unlike BER.
So why is Changi still so well loved by so many travellers? Simply because external architecture is merely a superficial facade which hardly adds anything to the travelling experience. You are spending time *in* the terminal, not outside it. What makes an airport excellent are all the hardware and software within, the later of which, in particular, is not easily replicated by just throwing tonnes of money like how the Chinese and Middle East do.
Of course we all have different tastes, but BER certainly looks homely and inviting enough, especially when compared to most German airports. I agree that the dominant use of wood is an excellent choice, although I am not a huge fan of the flooring (Changi intentionally chooses carpet because it dampens noise, reduces stress, and feels more cosy, for example). As long as the hardware is accompanied by good service, I am sure it will make a name for itself pretty soon. Good luck! ;)

BER will not be a hub airport. Frankfurt, Munich, Düssedorf are hubs. To a lesser extent Hamburg. Berlin does not have the OUTBOUND volume of high paying passengers to start a hub. Also these other airports are already well-established hubs. The growth in flights to Berlin has been through a differentiated market with lots of "budget airlines" - the melding of the two airport locations Tegel and Schönefeld will inhibit this growth. The most frequent destination for Berlin airports ? Frankfurt, Münich, Düsseldorf (from Wikipedia).

Its so sad that mostly every construction project in germany is not on time and is always delayed 3 - 4 years. Look at ukraine for example, they build 2 new airports, one in 3 years (2017-2020, the new Odesa international airport) and one in 4 years (2016-2020, opened this year due to covid named Zaprozhia international airport). These two are smaller than berlins, but still can hold 4 million pessangers a year together. There is also a new Dnipropetrovsk airport in construction in the town dnipro, which should be finished till the end of this year, which is a complete new airport, which is way bigger than those two. There are also other countries like france, italy, russia and so on. Its just sad to see that such a big economy country in europe is not capable of planning a new building / airport, although the other countries like ukraine and russia are not even developed countries, which have many other problems too

Very typical, by modern standards, design. Faceless straight glass forms. Gigantism with hints of the imperial past (despite the fact that the Germans are embarrassed in every possible way by their former monumentalism in architecture). There is no zest, like the same Tempelhof with this canopy or Tegel.
In my opinion, the most important thing in such projects is a balanced approach, when there are unique solutions, and scope, and most importantly, convenience for passengers - users, when the functionality is thought out!
I didn't see it here, unfortunately. Huge spaces, unnecessary long escalator lines between levels, endless exits to the boarding gates, and of course, an absolutely failed security check area.
When you get into such a modern and well-thought-out building, it turns out to be a disaster for you to see a queue for 40-50 minutes before the "security check". I'm sorry, but this is not acceptable! (
