The power of straight ankle locks

- Straight ankle lock (aka Achilles lock): Joint locks need to have the potential to do damage in order to be effective in the training room or high-level competition. Obviously, we should not be looking to do damage to our training partners, but rather, we want our joint locks to be applied efficiently so that they have the POTENTIAL to do damage, rather than just causing pain.
Experienced practitioners know exactly when they are caught in a submission that has damage potential often by pressure and positioning alone. As you advance in skill, you will also know when you have a submission locked on your training partner with positioning, joint tension and resistance.
Heel hooks are often preferred by leglock enthusiasts because they are extremely efficient and have tremendous damage potential. However, a common myth about straight ankle locks is that they just cause pain and do very little damage. This is untrue. Straight ankle locks, when applied properly and efficiently, have devastating damage potential to the various ligaments and extensor tendons of the foot and ankle.
Common mistakes with the straight ankle lock are being too high up on the ankle, and having an inefficient grip with your arm (making an “X” with your arm in relation to their ankle). This leaves too much surface area on the fulcrum of your arm against their ankle.
The other common issue when applying a straight ankle lock is your partner putting on the “boot” defense by driving their heel in and flexing their toes. Practice keeping their leg bent with your opposite arm while using the attacking arm to get as low on the Achilles heel as possible. Keep their foot in front of your rib to prevent the boot.
If you already have a decent heel hook game, straight ankle locks can be an excellent addition as a finishing entry attack or a follow up to a heel hook attempt.

Wow, great video Carl! Thanks for your content!
Awesome! Thank you!
@@carlmassarobjj5756 I wanted to ask about one thing. Overall, this type of ankle lock is one of the best I have tried so far. I only had a problem with two people and as soon as I grabbed their leg they straightened it out so I couldn't do anything. Could you tell me more about breaking down this type of defense? In other fights I have had no problem using what you demonstrated by placing your hand under the knee to break the defense, but in the case I mentioned the difference in strength could also have had an effect (or im not doing it correctly).
